THE SOUNDTRACK OF SUMMER
Every summer seems to have a soundtrack.
For me, one of those songs is “When Doves Cry” by Prince. It is hard to think of summer music without thinking of Prince from “Raspberry Beret” to “U Got the Look” to “Alphabet St.” But nothing quite took over a summer like “Purple Rain” did in 1984. I started undergrad that year, and I still remember riding down High Street in my friend Marla’s Trans Am, tinted windows up, music turned way too loud, and “When Doves Cry” pouring out of the speakers. It was one of those songs that sounded completely new yet instantly unforgettable. That is the magic of music. We may forget the exact date or the details, but we remember the song. We remember where we were, who we were with, and how that summer felt. This month, we started thinking about the songs that say “summer” to us. Some are old favorites. Some are tied to concerts, road trips, lake days, or backyard gatherings. Some are just songs that make us want to roll the windows down and enjoy the season. We asked our team to share a song that belongs on their summer soundtrack, and we put them together in a playlist. We hope it brings back a memory, makes you smile, or gives you something fun to play on your next summer drive.
Sometimes, it is a song playing on the radio during a long drive with the windows down. Sometimes, it is music drifting from a neighbor’s backyard, a band playing at an outdoor concert, or a favorite song that somehow becomes attached to one particular season of life. July feels especially full of music. There are concerts in the park, road trip playlists, songs playing at cookouts, and those familiar summer anthems that seem to come back around every year. One song can instantly take us back to a family vacation, a first concert, a Fourth of July celebration, a summer job, or a season when the kids were little and the days felt long.

AARON’S ROAD TRIP TO FURTHUR Team Concert Memory
As part of our July “Soundtrack of Summer” theme, we asked members of our team to share favorite songs and concert memories. Aaron, who handles document management for our firm, shared one of his favorite concert memories from late summer 2012.

Stephanie’s addition to our firm also helps expand our presence into the Youngstown area, allowing us to better serve injured clients across more of Ohio. One of my favorite concert memories was seeing Furthur for the first time at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. I had recently gotten into the Grateful Dead’s music, and this was my first opportunity to see Phil Lesh and Bob Weir perform live together. Looking back, it was also the only time I would get to see them share the stage, which makes the memory even more special. I made the trip alone, driving nearly three hours to the venue with my dog, Quinn. I checked us into a hotel, got Quinn settled in for the evening, and then headed to the show. There was something exciting about making the journey by myself. It felt less like simply attending a concert and more like heading out on an adventure.

As soon as the music started, I understood why so many people had followed the Grateful Dead, and the bands that grew from that music, for decades. The atmosphere was welcoming, the musicianship was incredible, and the songs I had been listening to suddenly came to life in a completely different way.
Seeing Phil and Bobby on stage together connected me to a piece of music history that, until then, I had only experienced through recordings. I have been to many concerts since then, and I have heard countless versions of the Grateful Dead’s music, but that first Furthur show remains one of my favorites. It was not just the music. It was the whole experience … discovering something new, hitting the road with Quinn, and seeing some of my all-time favorite musicians play together under the late-summer California sky. Years later, whenever I hear a Grateful Dead song, I am reminded of that drive, that show, and Quinn waiting for me back at the hotel after one of the best concerts I had ever seen.
Stephanie earned her law degree, cum laude, from The University of Akron School of Law, where she also received a Health Law Certificate and served as an Assistant Editor for the Akron Law Review. She earned her undergraduate degree, cum laude, from Kent State University. Outside of work, she enjoys playing outside with her kids, gardening, yoga, reading, and trying new restaurants with friends. She also enjoys hosting events at her house, whether it’s a waterslide day for kids or a craft brunch for the ladies! We are thrilled to have Stephanie join our team. Her experience, leadership, and commitment to helping injured people make her a wonderful addition to Rinehardt Injury Attorneys. Please join us in welcoming Stephanie!

Stephanie Hunt picked “Welcome to Miami” by Will Smith , which she says has played continuously in her head every summer since 1997. Kristin picked “Smooth” by Santana featuring
the song captures the laid-back, carefree feeling of summer and instantly transports him to a small beach town with a frozen drink in hand. Brilynn chose “Hope It’s Hot Out” by Kyle Clark , a song that reminds her of summer as a whole: feet on the dash, singing until your heart can’t anymore, and warm breezes blowing through your hair. Courtney has had “Victorious” by Panic! At the Disco on repeat lately. She said it is upbeat, energetic, and has the perfect soundtrack-of-summer feeling. Attorney Melanie picked “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears . It was everywhere during the summer of 1985, one of her favorite summers as a teenager … first summer job, first boyfriend, and her first summer cruising downtown as a licensed driver. Attorney Rachel chose “Dancing in the Moonlight” by King Harvest , a warm- weather classic that feels easy, happy, and nostalgic. It reminds her of summer nights with the windows down, when everything feels lighter and more carefree. Attorney Stephanie Mehle chose “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus as her summer song because it reminds her of summer breaks in college. We put all of these songs together into our Rinehardt Summer Soundtrack playlist. We hope it brings back a memory, makes you smile, or gives you something fun to play the next time you roll the windows down.
Our Summer Soundtrack
As part of our July “Soundtrack of Summer” theme, we asked our team to share a song that feels like summer to them. The answers were as varied as our team, everything from classic summer throwbacks to country, Christian music, indie pop, 1980s favorites, and songs that simply make you want to drive with the windows down. Hannah chose “Jackie and Wilson” by Hozier , a song that takes her back to June 2015, the summer after graduating from high school. She remembers driving to the LC Pavilion, now KEMBA Live!, with Hozier’s self-titled album playing the whole way. As they pulled up to the venue, they heard his mic check echoing down Neil Avenue. It was one of those perfect, almost- college, post-high-school freedom moments. Carrie picked “Celebration” by Forrest Frank , one of her favorite artists. She said the song has a catchy, joyful vibe and reminds her that every day is a day the Lord created and, therefore, a good day for celebration. Barb’s choice was “Summer Breeze” by Seals & Crofts . She remembers hearing it play from a ride at a summer carnival when she was a child. All these years later, the song still takes her right back to that moment. Faith chose “Do It With Soul” by Solomon Ray , a song she loves listening to on her way to work in the morning, because it instantly puts her in a good mood.
Rob Thomas . It was everywhere during the summer of 1999, which happened to be her last summer as a high school student. Hearing it now brings back memories of driving around with friends, laughing until their sides hurt, and enjoying the simple fun of being young. Alyssa chose “You Proof” by Morgan Wallen . She saw him in concert at Ohio State two summers ago and said it was the best concert she has ever been to: great music, great energy, and a great summer memory. Suzanna’s current summer playlist pick is “Saturday Sun” by Vance Joy . She said it’s an upbeat, hopeful song that makes her think of summer road trips with the windows rolled down. It is also part of a playlist she and her sister made for the drive to their annual camping trip. Beth chose “Sideways” by Balu Brigada , describing it as a fun, light song and, as she put it, whose life doesn’t go sideways at times? Aaron picked “Doin’ Time” by Sublime as his favorite summertime song. Beyond the obvious reference to summertime in the lyrics, he said
Windows Down Pressed Picnic Sandwiches These make-ahead sandwiches are perfect for a concert tailgate, picnic, road trip, or easy summer dinner. The best part? They actually get better after a few hours in the fridge.
DIRECTIONS 1. Slice the loaf of bread in half horizontally. 2. Spread pesto or olive tapenade on one side of the bread and mayonnaise or softened cream cheese on the other. 3. Layer the meats, cheese, roasted red peppers, greens, and any additional toppings. Season lightly with salt and pepper. 4. Place the top half of the bread back on the sandwich. Wrap the entire loaf tightly in plastic wrap, then foil. 5. Place the wrapped sandwich on a baking sheet and set another baking sheet or heavy pan on top. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight. 6. When ready to serve, unwrap and slice into individual sandwiches. Tailgate Tip Pack the sandwiches in a cooler and slice them before you leave, or bring a serrated knife and cut them on site. They are easy to eat, easy to share, and perfect with chips, fruit, or a simple summer salad.
INGREDIENTS • 1 large loaf ciabatta, focaccia, or Italian bread • 1/4 cup pesto or olive tapenade • 1/4 cup mayonnaise or softened cream cheese • 1/2 lb sliced turkey, ham, salami, or prosciutto • 1/2 lb sliced provolone, mozzarella, or Havarti
• Roasted red peppers, drained and patted dry • Fresh arugula or spinach • Thinly sliced tomato, optional • Thinly sliced red onion, optional • Salt and pepper • Olive oil and balsamic glaze, optional

Some concerts are memorable because of the music. Others stay with us because of who we were with, where we were in life, or the adventure of getting there. We asked our team to share favorite concert memories. For Hannah, it was seeing Hozier at the LC Pavilion in 2015. The drive to Columbus, his album on repeat, and hearing his mic check before the show made the night unforgettable. Carrie’s first concert was Petra , the Christian rock band formed in the 1970s. She saw them in the 1990s and even got her picture taken with a few band members. She remembers being beyond excited. Barb’s first concert was Styx in 1981. She remembers taking a walk with her aunt the next day and talking her ear off about every detail. Kristin’s favorite concert memory was a weekend music festival in the early 2000s. While Joan Jett, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and Loverboy took the stage, she remembers the friendships, camping, and unforgettable adventure most. Alyssa’s favorite concert was Morgan Wallen at Ohio State two summers ago. She described it as the best concert she has ever attended, with unforgettable energy.
Beth’s first concert was Journey’s 1980 Departure Tour in Cincinnati, with The Babys as the opening act. Tickets were only about $7–$9, which probably felt like a lot at the time, but she says it was worth every penny. Brilynn’s favorite concert memory was meeting Cole Swindell at Luke Bryan’s Farm Tour. During his performance, he took her phone and snapped a photo of himself with the crowd, a great souvenir.

Stephanie Hunt’s first concert was The Turnpike Troubadours last September, where she enjoyed a front-row spot just feet from the stage. Melanie’s favorite concert memory was seeing Maroon 5 at Blossom in August 2021, right as live music was returning after the pandemic shutdown. She also gives an honorable mention to the Fall Out Boy concert in Columbus in March 2024. Rachel’s first concert was seeing the Spice Girls in Columbus in 1998 with her mom at age 5. Hearing “Wannabe” live and cheering for her favorite, Baby Spice, made it a core childhood memory. Attorney Stephanie Mehle’s favorite concert memory is seeing Blink-182 and Gwen Stefani at her first-ever concert with her family. She remembers feeling so grown up.
