Designed for the demanding musician, the Audio-Technica Artist Elite series brings studio grade sonic quality and performance to the stage.

ARTIST ELITE SERIES

Microphones

It was basically two mics housed in one casing unit that provided perfect phase alignment, with the dynamic element holding the aggressive attack of the beater while the condenser element captured the sound of the shell.

T he “studio -to- stage” evolution, powered by the company’s engineering prowess, culminated with the introduction of the Artist Elite line in 2002. The flagship AE5400 shared the same 4050 element as its worthy predecessors, the AT4054 and AT4055. A sibling handheld condenser, the AE3300, which utilized the element from the studio stalwart AT4033, was better suited for smaller venues. The same pattern followed in instrument mics such as the AE3000, a low-profile side-address, large diaphragm condenser, and the large diaphragm end-fire AE5100. Because of their unique housing design, neither took up much valued space onstage, making them a musician’s best friend in a live setting. All the mics provided pristine studio quality sound for kick- out-the-jams live sound. Later, the need for a better kick-drum microphone, A-T engineering responded with an industry first: the dual-element AE2500.

It wasn’t long before glowing testimonials poured in.

“The AE2500 is one of the best mics that has ever come into this business,” noted Paul Owen, Metallica Monitor Engineer. “Considering so many people put condensers and dynamics together in a kick drum and never get it right, that is just an amazing bit of engineering. It’s just a perfect application for what we use it for… go straight in the middle, you never go out of phase, you never have a problem.” “The AE2500 is possibly the best mic ever made,” exclaimed Front -of-House Engineer Laurie Quigley (Aerosmith, Mötley Crüe, Van Halen, Saliva and others). “It’s an incredible kick-drum mic! But I also usethem on guitar cabinets. The first time I used the AE2500, I shoved it in front of a guitar cabinet just to see what it would do, and I was frightened by the sound – it was that good.”

Brilliantly engineered and built to last with heavy-duty die-cast body construction and stainless steel capsule enclosure and mount assembly. Superior anti-shock engineering ensures low handling noise and quiet performance and an elaborate filter system offers protection against plosives and sibilance without compromising high-frequency clarity.

South Africa is a country that hosts a plethora of music festivals ranging from genre to genre. Be it House music, World and even alternative music. Sometimes a festival will adhere to hosting

Just like water, music heals as well. Even the loneliest of hearts can be cured by simply listening to the right kind of music, at the right time and place. It also stimulates dopamine – a neurotransmitter that sends reward- motivated behavior signals to your brain. When you are stressed out and cannot bring yourself to think straight – reward yourself for working hard with good-sounding music. It might just inspire more greatness! Be it a day of jazz in the sun, a Balkan party in a forest or a night of Electronica in some concrete jungle, South Africa caters for it all!! Want to get your musical thirst quenched or your heart soothed in the most southern tip of Africa? Here are some of the best music festivals the country has to offer. There are so many that we will only list the top 10 and in alphabetical order. Enjoy!!

different genres to cater to different crowds at once.

Others are very genre or at least theme based. When in South Africa you get to choose the one YOU like, no matter the genre. Music is very much like water. It is part and parcel of our daily lives, whether we like it or not. Just like water flows everywhere in the world and is somewhat different from place to place, music is present and varies from place to place. Music festivals are one of the greatest ways to test uncharted waters.

So go and explore in the name of fun and happiness, I dare you.

UNDER THE AFRICAN SKY If you’re a fan of psychedelic trance and progressive music, Under The African Sky takes place at the start of September and is conveniently located just 25 minutes from Cape Town.

AfrikaBurn (by Burning Man) If you are guessing that this festival has something to do with the Burningman festival in the US, you are more than right! It’s an official regional version of it happening in the North of South Africa since 2007.

Afropunk Johannesburg Afropunk is an alternative music festival that takes place in five different cities over three continents. The United State of America, as the originator of the festival naturally, hosts the event in New York where it was founded and in Atlanta. In Europe, you can catch the festival in London and in Paris.

Cape Town International Jazz Festival

The year that everyone thought the world would be coming to an end is the same year this festival was founded. It seems to be going against the grain was the best thing the organizers could have done for themselves. Twenty years later, the event is considered to be the biggest international festivals in sub Saharan Africa!

Bushfire Festival

Okay sure, this festival is in a country that is situated in southern Africa and not South Africa per se, where the other festivals take place, but you know what? Swaziland is situated within South Africa and shares very similar cultures.

If you missed the first half of the fun festivities in South Africa don’t worry! Rocking The Daisies has you covered as they will only be blessing masses with music, art, and activities in October. Because there is no way you can have flowers in your title and not embrace the spring season!!

Splashy Fen This year 2019 marks the 30th edition of Splashy Fen and took place between the 18th – 22nd of April. Don’t fret if you missed, it will be back next year! All you have to do to secure a ticket is visit their website frequently enough to catch the next dates or join their newsletter as they have not been released yet.

Grahamstown National Arts Festival

The Grahamstown Festival is held for 11 days and is the biggest festival in all of South Africa. It celebrates most art forms known to man; from music to sculptures and drama. Any lover of art would feel at home at this event.

Klein Karoo National Arts Festival Situated in the more arid parts of South Africa, this festival is the furthest thing from being void of entertainment and inspiration through the arts. Nor is it lacking in freshness because every year, new artists are sourced locally and nationally. And every year, awards are handed over to the best “newcomer” in all genres.

ULTRA South Africa The festival dates are set for Friday, March 10 at the Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town and Saturday, March 11 at the Nasrec Expo Centre.

10 SALES TRAINING techniques for sales Training your team requires providing them with more than a manual and a few workshops before sending them out into the field. In fact, if that’s your current system, all of that hard work and training could be forgotten by your team in just a few months. 1. Do more field training Field training could be the key to unlocking more productivity within your team. It helps to increase your ROI and gives your sales teams more real-world experience. 2. Use success stories to train and motivate It’s not enough to talk through sales theories and simulations without examples to back them up. Sales reps need real-world success stories to get inspired. Choose stories and case studies that show examples of what worked, what didn’t, and how the process works from start to finish. It also helps to discuss common themes in a successful sales experience and look for patterns and metrics.

3. Incentivize your team A thriving economy can make it harder to onboard new team

members. Unemployment rates have dropped, with recruiters reporting difficulty finding enough qualified candidates to fill positions. Your business can’t attract and retain top talent easily when the competition is so fierce. And today’s employees need more than just the industry standard and a decent commission salary. 4. Schedule 1:1 Meetings with Sales Reps Training shouldn’t be done with a set -it-and-forget-it mentality. Make ongoing check- ins and status updates part of your sales training and hold regular one-on-one meetings. The constant communication opens the door to exploring where your sales team is still struggling so you can address any weaknesses that may require additional training. See what’s working and what’s not, and develop a more meaningful and productive relationship with your team.

sound press

“Research indicates that without systematic, ongoing learning and

reinforcement, approximately 50% of the learning content is not retained within five weeks, much less applied. Within 90 days, 84% of what was initially learned is lost.”

sound press

10 sales training techniques… cont.

5. Integrate your team with other departments Look for breakdowns in communication in your company and see how you can create a more streamlined experience. Creating silos may alleviate some of the operational stresses but can isolate your sales team. Consider integrating your sales team with other departments to help train in areas like customer service and get more insights into product development. 6. Train with thought leaders Take a look at the other people in your office and your industry who are natural leaders and speakers. Product and sales training workshops and simulations are just the first step in getting your team up and running. Consider bringing in thought leaders in your industry to share deeper insights and their own experience. When your team learns from the best, they emulate those techniques. 7. Offer daily micro training Longer isn’t always better when it comes to learning. According to Shift Learning, learning in stretches of 3 to 7 minutes matches the working memory capacity and creates 50% more engagement. Creating bite- sized training can align with our brain’s natural ability and allow us to retain more information. 8. Focus on a specialty No one skill always closes the sale. In reality, sales reps lean towards specific skills and turn them into strengths. Instead of trying to build a uniform sales team, draw out their strengths and encourage them to specialize. Pair your reps with other reps who thrive in different areas to foster a culture of continued support and cross- training. 9. Assign a mentor Assigning a mentor can make a big impact on your sales team and improve retention rates. Millennials planning to stay with their employer for more than five years are twice as likely to have a mentor (68%) than not (32%). 10. Offer more constructive criticism Training isn’t just about going through systems and processes to establish best practices. A sales team that can handle constructive criticism is more willing to learn and improve on an ongoing basis. The added side benefit is helping your team develop a thicker skin while strengthening their resolve to be better salespeople. The underlying foundation should point towards a culture of learning and training.

ETHOS Restaurant,

Ethos is an upscale restaurant that pays tribute to the Mediterranean and is designed to draw in an audience of up-and-coming entrepreneurs and business professionals. These elements show up in the food, the interiors, and the people. Each aspect is interpreted in a revitalized context with a South African flavor. JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA Case Study

THE CHALLENGE Ethos restaurant brings something new to South Africa. The attention to detail is exquisite. From the elegant plating of the food to the warmth of the lighting, every detail is accounted for. To create the desired mood for the space, there needed to be an added audio experience where sound comes from seemingly everywhere without the look of big bulky speakers hanging from the wall or ceiling.

sound press

REQUIREMENTS Adding audio to the space needed to meet stringent demands to match the carefully curated details throughout the restaurant. The audio had to be visually minimalistic so as not to be a distraction from the overall feeling of the space. The sound quality needed to be superb and the atmosphere needed to be comfortable. The system would need to deliver music at the perfect level, comfortable to listen to without distracting or interfering with conversation in any way

METHODOLOGY Recognizing the importance of selecting a sleek, reliable, and capable audio system, the Ethos design team partnered with the experts at ProAudio, DJHeaven, and DeVrye Automation. Ultimately, the team selected Sonance Professional Series as the audio solution to meet the requirements for Ethos to complete the overall atmosphere and dining RESULT As the first implementation of Sonance Professional Series products into a project in Africa, Ethos is breaking ground for endless possibilities of future commercial projects that may choose to feature Sonance Professional Series. The speakers are available in various form factors with a minimalistic finish and shape to blend into any space and provide proper audio intelligibility and coverage for a comfortable experience. The result is audio that sounds great but is almost invisible. The music can be heard but the source cannot be easily determined by the ear or the eye. The audio does not take away from the environment, but rather, it adds the perfect touch to it.

NORD KEYBOARDS introduces the new Stage 4

T he Stage series of keyboards combine all of Nord’s best technology into something of an ultimate instrument. You’ve got a huge piano layer, an organ layer and a massive synthesizer layer with virtual analogue, FM, wavetable and sampling. Each section has a dedicated control section making it an extremely powerful and versatile machine.

With an intuitive new panel design, a premium triple sensor keybed, complete effect sections for each layer and massive enhancements to our award-winning technologies, the Nord Stage 4 sets a new standard.

sound press

The Piano has a new and enhanced collection of Grands, Uprights and Electric Pianos that digs into the new Dynamic Compression and Unison modes. The Organ introduces physical drawbars across all models with LED indicators for a complete overview. The Synth section remains largely unchanged although they have, as predicted, doubled the sample memory to a modest 1GB. Nord has expanded the Effects section to offer a complete suite for each layer. This adds a new Pump effect or side chain simulation, a Spin effect and many new variations of Reverb, Delay, Amps and Modulation effects.

Three Models As with the previous versions, there are three Stage 4 models. As they all have physical drawbars now the only difference is in the size of the keybed. The Stage 4 88 has a fully weighted 88- key Triple Senor keybed with aftertouch. The Stage 4 73 has the same over 73 keys, and the Stage 4 Compact goes with a semi-weighted waterfall keyboard version over 73 keys. What’s new? The Stage 4 has had a front panel overhaul. The new design has dedicated LED faders for each layer and Layer Scenes for switching between setups at the touch of a button. There’s a powerful new effects section, versatile pedal options and a top-class triple sensor keybed in three sizes.

Powersoft Empowers the Faithful at Madison’s Vine Church

Powersoft Duecanali and Quattrocanali give modern church power and versatility for growing congregation.

O perating out of a modern building with exposed architecture and open ceilings, The Vine Church of Madison, WI has been serving its young congregation since first opening its doors in 2013. When church leadership realized that its existing sound system was inadequate for the growing sonic needs of its services, they contracted professional audio and lighting installation company Sven Pro to create a new sound system that would be custom designed for space and would increase speech intelligibility and overall sound quality.

Sven Pro System Designer Blake Akers designed a system based around Powersoft Duecanalli and Quattrocanali amplifiers for a powerful, versatile system that will serve the Vine Church for years to come. The heart of the system that Akers and team designed for Vine Church consists of a Powersoft Duecanali 4804 DSP+D and a Quattrocanali 2404 DSP+D to power a Seeburg system, dividing the load between the two amplifiers for maximum control. The Quattrocanalipowered the main speakers with the Duecanali controlling the subwoofers.

“We chose the Powersoft amplifiers for a few reasons.

Firstly, they are incredibly reliable, and we knew that they would be able to serve the church for a long time,” he explained.

Secondly, they are incredibly powerful amplifiers, and we knew that this would be easy lifting for them in a room of this size.”

Church in Madison, Wisconsin, United States

The speaker system was chosen using acoustic modeling software, with the main and side fill speakers installed in

“That way they are plug and play when we get onsite, and we can immediately start tuning to the room. Not only that, but because they are all on the network, we can control them using DSP from front of house without having to connect any Ethernet cables.” With the new system in place, Vine Church’s tech staff have been enjoying the significant upgrade in sound and the increased ease of use that has come with a specifically designed system. “The EQing in the room is much easier now and the increased audio quality has made the job for the staff so much easier,” Akers said.

the beams overhead to ensure maximum coverage. “Using the

modeling software, we knew right away what speaker system we wanted to use, and that we wanted to use the overhead beams to hang them for the correct angles,” Akers said. “We also did some acoustic treatment in the room to take away unnecessary reverberation.” Prior to installing the amplifiers in the church, Akers was able to program them specifically for the install using Powersoft’s ArmoníaPlus system management software, enabling an easy set- up onsite. “We like using ArmoníaPlusfor these installs because it allows us the prep the amplifiers in- house before the install,” he explained.

HT-20R MKII

EL84 Power Stage

EL84s are at the tonal heart of the HT-20R MkII combo and head. We applied our decades of valve amp design experience to combine the response and character of this classic British valve with a carefully voiced preamp to create wonderfully lush valve tones. From pure boutique cleans, to mild overdrive that cleans up by backing off the guitar volume control, right up to saturated distortion, this amp does it all. The best part? These amps have in-built load protection, meaning you can use them without a cabinet connected for silent practice and recording.

Patented ISF The patented ISF (Infinite Shape

Ground-Breaking Cleans Two footswitchable Clean Voices:

Feature) control is unique to Blackstar Amplification and represents a major step forward in tone shaping flexibility. The ISF control shifts the response of the three-control tone stack between a US type response at one end and a UK type response at the other. Importantly, in between the two extremes lie an infinite number of alternative tone choices that would be otherwise unavailable.

Voice 1: This clean voice gives a bright, tight tone with a solid bass response. The tone shaping is positioned early in

the gain structure for a refined American tone and response.

Voice 2: This clean voice gives a highly responsive “chime” with a looser, resonant bottom-end for a British tone that can be pushed into a mid-range overdrive when driven hard.

Concentrated, to Concert-rated

The HT-20R MkII comes equipped with a power reduction feature taking you down to 2W without any tonal compromise, perfect for driving those EL84’s hard at manageable volumes in the studio or home. When you’re ready to take to the stage, switch to full 20W and utilise the XLR DI output to simultaneously feed direct to the sound engineer with incredible sounding cabinet simulation.

ART HOUSE ACADEMY Relies on KRK Systems’ Studio Monitors

KRK Provides Dynamic Reference Monitoring and Playback for GRAMMY Award Nominated Projects Mixed at Art House Academy

MIAMI – As a Latin GRAMMY Award-winning and GRAMMY- nominated mixing and recording engineer, musician and sound supervisor, Nicolas Ramirez’ impressive resume also includes head mixing and recording engineer at Art House Academy & Abbey Road Institute Miami, a music performance/production and sound engineering school.

Ramirez has worked with high-profile recording artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Marc Anthony and Bad Bunny, and knows quality matters. “KRK makes a variety of superior studio monitors that align perfectly with my workflow; the brand’s solutions are ideal for both professional and home studio applications,” he says. “Not only do they sound spectacular, but they are also very budget friendly. I especially love that I can use KRK’s Audio Tools app to adjust the monitors to best suit each unique environment I work in. Overall, deploying KRKs is easy. You don’t need any amplifiers for them to sound good — they are amazing on their own.” Ramirez not only has used KRKs at Art House, but has also used both the monitors and Audio Tools app at recording artists’ home studios.

He recently implemented KRK Systems’ V6 Series 4 powered

reference monitors into the space. Ramirez was elated to continue working with the KRK brand as he also uses the ROKIT 5s and 7s in various home studio applications. Using his KRKs to produce award- winning tracks, Ramirez is up for three Latin GRAMMYs this year with nominations for two “Record of the Year” awards as well as an “Album of the Year” nomination.

He prefers the V6 monitors for playback use and the ROKITs as reference monitors. “I’m so excited about my relationship with KRK — they really know what they’re talking about,” says Ramirez. “Working with the KRK team is an absolute joy. Most brands solely focus on pushing their product lines, but with KRK, they want to hear customer feedback so that they can improve their offerings in any way possible. KRK monitors are simply the best and I would recommend them to anyone. I’m really happy that we upgraded to the V6 monitors at Art House, but I will forever be a fan of the classic ROKIT sound — it just can’t be beat!”

Additionally, Ramirez appreciates the dynamic response of his new V6s. “The V Series monitors are amazing as they deliver an extremely dynamic sound. It’s been interesting to see how the V6 monitors compare to the ROKIT 5 G4s. The ROKITs have a less dynamic output, making the two pairs of KRKs complement each other perfectly. With the ROKITs, I can really work with the sound and make sure I’m putting punches in the right place to ensure that the kick isn’t fighting with the bass.” Throughout Ramirez’s experience with KRK monitors, he has developed preferences for each monitor’s application.

A NEW HORIZON: Introducing the DJM-A9 next-generation professional DJ mixer • Stunning sound quality that beats the DJM-900NXS2 • Evolved playability and enhanced performance features • Expanded connectivity with brand-new input options

sound press

AlphaTheta Corporation announces the release of the DJM-A9 next-generation professional DJ mixer from its Pioneer DJ brand.

The 4-channel unit raises the bar for club standard mixers – boasting huge upgrades compared to its predecessor, the DJM-900NXS2 – with stunningly clear sound quality, enhanced playability and connectivity, and a host of new features to help you take your performances to the next level.

sound press

You’ll sound better than ever when you perform on the DJM-A9. An ESS Technology 32-bit high-quality A/D converter is built in to the channel input section and D/A converters of the same type are featured in the master and booth output sections to produce crystal-clear, natural-sounding audio on the dancefloor and in the booth for any genre of music you play. The sound from the microphone input and headphone outputs has also been enhanced through fine-tuning and improved construction with carefully selected new components. The DJM-A9 has also received major upgrades to the way it feels. Various elements have been tweaked to make the DJ mixer more instinctive and comfortable to play on, including increased spacing around the EQ knobs. The channel faders and the MAGVEL FADER crossfader are slicker than those on the DJM-900NXS2, enabling you to mix and scratch more smoothly. And the Sound Color FX include the world’s first Center Lock feature, which you can turn on to ensure you don’t accidentally cross over between the hi/low parameters, no matter how quickly you turn the knob. Beat FX are more instinctive to use on the DJM-A9 thanks to the new color display and revamped X-Pad, which is now arranged horizontally for simple, sideways finger sliding. The Beat FX channel selector is now a dedicated button, enabling quicker effect routing, and the Multi I/O section has been upgraded to offer true send capabilities.

In total, there are 14 Beat FX to play with, including 3 new ones.
