Dear Lakes families,
Community Noticeboard
20
First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude to each and every one of you for your continued support and commitment to the success of our students at The Lakes. It takes a village to raise children and we continue to be fortunate to have strong partnerships with our families. As a school, we have been really impressed with the way our students have started the school year. We have had a special focus on Respect, and this is highly visible across the College. The way our students are lining up, greeting each other, looking after each other and setting up for success each day will really set the scene for a rewarding year ahead. Our staff have been working diligently to provide enriching and engaging educational experiences for all our students, empowering them to reach their full potential. A very special welcome to all our new Prep and Year 7 students and to our new families. The Prep team is ready and excited for a great year ahead, full of curiosity, new connections and challenges. A big thank you to our Prep and Year 7 team who were able to deliver a best practice transition program throughout 2023 and into this year. This effort will certainly have a very positive impact on how our students have started school this year. We are honoured to share this educational journey with our new families and look forward to working together in partnership for many years to come.

PRIMARY HOURS 8.45AM – 3.45PM
I need to remind parents and carers that our official school opening for the Primary Campus are from 8.45am through until 3.45pm each day. At times we have students who arrive well before this time and some who stay in the school grounds after that time. There is no adult or teacher supervision of students outside of these times and I request that you make the appropriate arrangements to ensure the safety and well - being of your child.
We are fortunate to have Camp Australia available to provide before and after school care for those families that need it. Please contact them for more details.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
Our uniform dress code reinforces in students pride in their own appearance, instils recognition of themselves as an integral part of the school community, and assists in developing pride in representing their school. The uniform dress code aims to promote equality amongst all students. This term as part of our wider focus on our value of RESPECT we are seeking your support to ensure that all students are dressed each and every day looking like a full member of our school community.
We are lucky to have many uniform options, and I encourage any families having difficulties providing school uniform to contact the school so that we can assist.
If a student is not in school uniform as listed in our policy, families will be contacted as a reminder. We will then also follow up with families to help ensure and support our students to follow the policy.
Have a wonderful weekend.
SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT
Hello all,
A very (belated) warm welcome to all our new families and returning families to The Lakes in 2024. Hope everyone has settled in OK – amazingly we are already halfway through Term 1! For our new families, School Councils play an important part in Victorian schools and is made up of parent/carer representatives, teacher representatives, students and the Leadership Team. We are essentially the number one, leading parental voice of the school community and act as conduit regarding school issues between the parent/carer community and the College. Council meets twice per term on a Tuesday and visitors and observers are always welcome!
Our February meeting was our last meeting for the 2023/24 Council term. At this meeting we:
•
Heard about our College ’ s 2023 VCE results and student 2024 pathways;
• Heard from both the Secondary and Primary School Captains and
issues they have already identified for their peers including tweaking bell times on Secondary and vandalism to the newly refurbished Year 3 - 6 toilets.
• Discussed prioritising the air conditioning project in classrooms on both Campuses.
Our next meeting will be the AGM on March 19, where the results of the recent call for nominations will be announced and the new 2024/25 Council will be formed. A huge shout out to this term ’ s parent/carer and staff members and observers for their time, dedication and enthusiasm, it has been a privilege to lead an aligned group, whose hearts are in the right place. It has certainly been a team effort and everyone has added value with varying perspectives and backgrounds. As always, if you have any issues, ideas, questions that you would like raised at our next Council meeting, or any other support, we are more than happy to hear from families so please feel free to send me an email to amanda.farrelly@education.vic.gov.au.
Cheers,
Amanda Farrelly School Council President

YEAR 6 REFLECTION JACOB D & SELINA G YEAR 6 SRC
On Tuesday 20 th February, our Year 6 students were lucky enough to be a part of the Victorian Space Science Education Centre incursion called, “ Reach for the stars & Tickle my drone. ” We learnt to control Sphero robots on Mars. We worked in teams to analyse a problem, design a solution and evaluate our success with our robots. We planned our robot's mission, deploying our robot on Mars for a special mission. We created rockets with plastic bottles and different materials and launched them outside to see how high they would go. We explored different types of forces such as gravity, thrust, lift and weight. We used air pressure and water to fuel the rockets. We enjoyed the incursion because we got to code, explore and experiment in different ways. Thanks to Ms Wilson for organising the incursion and we can ’ t wait to continue exploring coding in Digital Design and STEM.
YEAR 7 REFLECTION BERTRAND N & JAHMIN S YEAR 7 SRC
The Year 7’ s have settled into Secondary School well. We are enjoying our classes and getting to know the secondary teachers. It was exciting getting our own lockers that we have the responsibility to look after and also changing classes and classrooms each session. The thing we have most enjoyed about the Secondary Campus is having the canteen! We are enjoying the new electives that are on the Secondary Campus. Some classes have started Dance and others have started Food Studies and it ’ s been fun learning new things.
We are really excited for the upcoming camp to Philip Island where we are going away for 2 nights and 3 days. It will be so much fun.
COLLEGE CONNECTIONS
What a pleasure it was to meet with the Alumni after so many years. Sto- ries and laughter were shared with so many familiar faces to celebrate our journey here at The Lakes South Morang College and how far we have come throughout the years. The event so nostalgic, felt like we were walking back into our home es- pecially with being able to reunite with our teachers and peers who guid- ed us throughout the years with wisdom, patience and compassion.
It became so evident as we shared where we are in our lives how much we have grown and utilised the skills that were instilled in us for so long.
Not only was this event a chance for us to reminisce, but an opportunity to express out gratitude to the teachers who shaped us into the wonder- ful, thriving adults that we are today.
Thank you for the wonderful event and we cannot wait to meet again at our next alumni event.

Our Year 9/10 interschool volleyball teams showcased exceptional teamwork and sportsmanship at the competition held at Diamond Valley Sports & Fitness Centre. Despite facing a challenging draw, our teams displayed resilience and determination throughout the matches. With each serve, spike, and block, they exemplified the core values of our College – Leadership, Teamwork, and Respect. Although victory may have eluded us, the spirit and camaraderie exhibited by our players were truly commendable.
Well done to all involved.
