Mark Videan ABOUT: After 42 years as a jeweler and goldsmith specializing in custom design, I am enjoying the freedom of being a visual artist. Having spent most of my career focused on incredibly small details, relief printing seems to suit my temperament. Printing block carving tools are quite similar to engraving tools used on metal. I studied art at Michigan State University, with an emphasis in Metalsmithing. I have also explored lithography, basket weaving, wood carving, making books, and painting. My basketry work has been exhibited internationally. My metal pieces have been shown in galleries and stores around the US. I have had my work displayed at the Traverse District Library, the Dennos Museum, and Higher Art Gallery in Traverse City. I am a current member of the Elizabeth Lane Oliver Center for the Arts, the Ludington Area Center for the Arts, and the Crooked Tree Art Center. My work is shown regularly at these venues. I am inspired by nature and the many photographs I have taken on travels around the country. I enjoy exploring the interface between science and the arts. THIS YEAR: I learned how fortunate I am to live where I do, surrounded by nature’s beauty and away from the harsh Covid realities of metropolitan life. I learned how much a phone call or text to a friend or loved one can mean when the timing is just right. I also learned that linoleum and wood block carving tools are great for carving

“Effervescent,” Trace monotype print, ink on paper, 2020, 9 x 11 in, $180. “Effervescent” is an attempt to illustrate happiness, lightness, upwelling of joy. Think of looking into a glass of champagne, protozoans swimming around under a microscope, the bubbly feeling of new love. Always experimenting, this was one of my first forays into trace monotyping, a much more spontaneous method of working than my usual highly detailed relief print work.

“Out of the Woods - Sunset,” Linocut print, ink and colored pencil on paper, 2020, 10 x 8 in, $100. “Out of the Woods - Sunset” is based on a photo of a mysterious figure emerging from a forest. Originally planned as a black and white print series, I thought it needed some color and added the pencil work. I hope the sunset adds a bit of warmth to an otherwise spooky piece. Another, more haunting version has a moonrise glowing through the trees.
