The 3rd annual Gender and Sexuality Al- liance (GSA) Empowerment Day was held Thursday, January 12, 2017, at Russell High School. The goal was to bring students to- gether to discuss Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transgender, Two-Spirit and Queer (LGBTQ+) issues, and to determine ways tomake schoolsmore welcoming and inclusive for all students. The event attracted participants of GSA clubs from Seaway District High School, Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, St. Lawrence Secondary School, Rideau Dis- trict High School, Rockland District High School, Smiths Falls and District Collegiate Institute and Russell High School. “Participants and supporters had the op- portunity to voice some of their questions
Key points of discussion included ways to offer “safe spaces” for the LGBTQ+ com- munity within schools, through such av- enues as gender-neutral washrooms and change areas, how to address homophobia, transphobia, and bullying, and ensuring our curriculum is inclusive. The key note speaker at the event was CalvinNeufeld, from the Perth area. Neufeld gave a presentation called Why We Rock , reflecting on how to celebrate, build on, and find strength in the differences defining the LGBTQ+ community.

A big thank you on behalf of the Good Neighbours Food Bank On behalf of the Board of Directors, all volunteers, as well as users of the Good Neighbours Food Bank of the Township of Russell, we thank the entire community for your generosity and support at the food and fundraising events that took place over the holiday season. Over the course of the Fill the bus event held on December 11th and 12, we were able to raise nearly $ 25,000 in food and cash donations! For this event, we want to thank Mario Racine of the Embrun Independent, who held this food and fundraising event, as well as Mario Laplante of 417 Bus Line for generously providing a bus to fill with donations, without this the event could not have taken place. A big thank you to the volunteers who agreed to give their time and energy to make this food and fundraiser a great success: Gerry Benoit who drove the bus, auxiliaries officers of the Ontario Provincial Police, the Royal Bank of Embrun, the Caisse populaire of Embrun, students of the region, as well as

Un grand merci aux bénévoles qui ont accepté de consacrer leur temps et leur énergie à faire de cette collecte de fonds un grand succès: Gerry Benoit qui a conduit l'autobus, les agents auxiliaires de la Police Provinciale de l'Ontario, la Banque Royale d'Embrun, la Caisse populaire d’Embrun, des étudiants de la région, ainsi que des bénévoles de la Banque alimentaire sur lesquels nous pouvons toujours compter. Nous remercions également nos bénévoles spéciaux : Pierre Leroux, Grant Crack et Francis Drouin. Beaucoup d'autres événements de financement et des campagnes de nourriture ont été tenus au cours de la période des Fêtes et nous tenons à remercier sincèrement les organisations suivantes pour leur immense générosité : Le Tigre Géant d'Embrun, le Club Optimiste Embrun, la Guignolée de Limoges, les Pompiers de Limoges, le Russell Foodland, les Pompiers de Russell, les Chevaliers de Colomb et les Maisons Corvinelli. Nous pouvons déjà vous assurer que les dons reçus nous permettront de continuer à aider les membres de notre communauté dans le besoin, tout au long de l'année. L’orateur principal de l’événement était Calvin Neufeld, de la région de Perth. —photo fournie Domestic dispute road rage OPP in Embrun have charged a man in what appears to be a domestic dispute situation that turned vio- lent in a public parking lot.The police incident brief states that on Jan. 27, OPP officers were called to the parking lot of the Tim Hortons in Embrun. They arrested a 19-year-old man reported to have hit his ex-girlfriend’s car on purpose. No names have been released at present for reasons of the victim’s safety.The accused is charged with dangerous driv- ing, criminal harassment, forcible confinement, and failure to obey a probation order. He was taken into custody pending a bail court hearing. We can already assure you that the donations received will allow us to continue to assist members of our community in need, throughout the year. Our fight against hunger in our community would be impossible without your support.
