Russell’s 18-year-oldMikayla Hay had the privilege to ride her horse Kit-Kat in the Presidential Inauguration Parade on Fri- day, January 20, as amember of the Culver Girls Academy Equestriennes, a prestigious boarding school in Indiana. Mikayla always knew she wanted to at- tend Culver. “It was a lifetime goal”, she said. “My grandfather worked summer school there, made me visit one year and I knew right away I wanted tomakemy high school career there.” Culver is one of the largest boarding schools in the United States, with over 800 students, and a total campus of more than 1,800 acres (7.3 km2) which, among others, shelters the Vaughn Equestrian Center, one of the country’s largest indoor riding hall and stable complexes. The center consists of the Culver Academy Black Horse Troop (boys) and Equestriennes (girls). Participating in the inaugural parade is a long tradition for Indiana’s Culver Acade- mies, which has sent riders on many inau- gurations, the first of which was in 1913. “Black Horse boys have been in 17 pres- idential inaugurations, and Equestriennes girls have been in eight of these parades.” Every year, boys and girls train by trying

I re- member walking down Pennsylvania Ave- nue and I couldn’t believe I was there. I still replay this moment inmy head and think... I actually did it.” “Nothing bad happened,” said Mikayla, “a couple of horses got nervous, but not Kit- Kat, she did not get spooked.” Needless to say that spending a lot of time with their animal, the riders at Culver Academy develop special bonds with their mounts. The students can only hope that they are chosen as such ceremonies happen only every 4 or 8 years. Mikayla, now in grade 12, has attended Culver since grade 9 and will graduate this year. She found out that she was going to take part in the parade in December.
