Tyesha Rhodes - “Racism in Admissions Policy: University of Missouri's ‘Memorandum For the Record’” (session 10) In this paper, I show the racism and bias against African American students in the University of Missouri admissions policy during the 1960s. The collection is housed in the manuscript collection at the State Historical Society of Missouri’s Center for Missouri Studies in Columbia, MO and includes a document titled “Memorandum For the Record.” Within it, one can see a huge problem in the admissions process towards “negro” students, making it clear that they were only welcome under certain circumstances. This historical document made it clear that these African American students were expected to go to Lincoln University in Jefferson City because they weren’t welcomed at Mizzou. Tyesha Rhodes - “Welcome To Our Tea Party: Analyzing the Caterpillar in Different Adaptations of Lewis Carroll's Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland” (session 1) In this panel, we look at the analysis of the different characters in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland . In my paper specifically, I look at different adaptations of The Caterpillar between different films and the novel. Dajah Robinson - “Stigmatization of Medical Cannabis” (poster session) This study discusses the issues regarding the stigmatization and legislation surrounding medical marijuana (more formally known as cannabis) in the medical field. The legalization of medical cannabis is spreading like wildfire throughout the United States. This study will look into where students get their information regarding cannabis which is hypothesized to not be from a reliable source. These are the people who are voting in their prospective states with inadequate knowledge. The stigma surrounding medical cannabis is unequal to that of other drugs when it is public information that said drugs are even more dangerous and adds thousands to the country's mortality rate. Ultimately, the argument in this paper and purpose of this experiment is to push for more research based knowledge surrounding medical cannabis which will decrease risky drug behavior and likely benefit the people who need it. Larry Rodriguez - “Fatherless Homes Have More of a Negative Impact on our Criminal Justice System than Traditional Family Homes” (poster session) Parental absence is known to harm early development in children, fatherless homes are increasing everyday and this is having a negative impact on the community and criminal Justice system. Students at Missouri Valley will be surveyed about their childhood and demographics to see if this is an accurate assumption.
