SRS Program Spring 2023

Andrew Welty & Rachel Mapes- “The Wonderful World of Autism” (poster session) In this presentation, we will cover all the wonderful things about autism, what autism is, and what are some signs of a person that has autism. We will also describe what to do if someone has autism, how they can help that person with autism, and some other unique things about autism. Our main points that we will be talking about in this presentation are the definition of Autism, signs of autism, causes of autism, what to do to help people with autism, what children with autism want us to know, and other interesting things. Autism is very interesting to learn about and come and see how we share how wonderful the world of autism is, and get a better understanding of Autism so we can help people with it. Xzavion West - “ IAmLegend : Beyond the Breaking Point” (session 4) When I watched the movie I AmLegend I thought about the mindset of the character and how certain situations can affect someone’s mind when stressed. Will Smith’s character, in some parts of the movie, talks about the hopelessness of his situation and how there is no one left. Despite his gloomy opinion he persists in spite of being at his proverbial knife’s edge or the way I’d like to put it “his breaking point.” In this essay I will analyze the main characters of the movie I Am Legend to find out what their breaking point is in order to address the question of why they push forward in the face of insurmountable odds and explore how this may relate to real life. Damon Williams - “The Line Between Good Competition and Harmful Competition” (session 6) When I read Brenda Peynado’s short story “Yaiza” I remembered the type of competition that my best friend Booker and I would have because we would be ready to fight and get so mad at each other because we were so competitive. We would be playing streetball and elbowing each other and pushing and definitely fouling each other. In this essay I will analyze “Yaiza” and research an article called “Cooperativeness and Competitiveness as Two Distinct Constructs” to explore the competitiveness between my friend and I. Sade Wright - “Music Preference Study” (poster session) This research project analyzes the correlations between music preferences and social factors such as personality and stress amongst college students. Music preferences are defined as a person's liking for one piece of music over another. In past research over several decades, music preferences have been correlated with variables that include gender, personality, and social identity. In this study the relationships between personality, stress, how students interact with music, and students exposure to certain songs were examined to determine the impact these factors have on students music preferences. The subjects of this study are undergraduate psychology students, and the measure used for data collection was an online google forms survey. The findings of this study will be discussed during the poster session at the Student Research Symposium.
