Road Side Inspections
A roadside vehicle check may be conducted at any time by a department for transport DVSA inspector, Trading Standards Officer or uniformed Police Officer.
Normally a Police Officer will stop or direct you to the inspection location.
A Driver cannot refuse an Authorised Vehicle Inspection
During the inspection, any of the following documents may be issued:
PG9 - Prohibition of driving a vehicle on a road PG9A - Variation of prohibition on driving a vehicle PG9B - Authorisation to move a prohibited vehicle PG9C - Refusal to remove a prohibition PG10 - Removal of a prohibition GV3 - Diversion of goods vehicle to a place of inspection GV160 - Notification of a vehicle overweight GVDN - Notification of mirror defects SC1 - Record of vehicle inspection
Receipt of any of the above documents must be reported to the traffic office or management at the earliest opportunity, and all documentation must be given to the Traffic office at debrief.
Vehicle and Trailer Heights
The Law
From the 1 st October 1997 if the travelling height of your vehicle or trailer exceeds 3.0 meters (9ft 9ins) there must be a notice or method of indicating the overall travelling height fitted in the cab where it can be easily read by the driver.
Rigid Vehicles
All rigid vehicles must have non-variable decals fitted inside of the cab which is in full view of the driver in the normal driving position, indicating the maximum height of the vehicle when un-laden. Articulated Vehicles All articulated vehicles must have a variable height indicator fitted in the cab which is in full view of the driver in normal driving position, indicating the maximum height of the trailer when un-laden
Please note: If the trailer is lower than the overall height of the tractor unit or the tractor unit is not connected to a trailer, the tractor unit height must be displayed.
