Reaction

It takes a certain amount of time for a driver to react to a hazard and start applying the brakes. During this time the vehicle is still moving the faster the vehicle the greater the thinking distance.

Breaking

The braking distance is the distance the vehicle travels when the brakes are first applied to where the vehicle stops. If the braking force is too great, the tyres may not grip the road surface and the vehicle may skid. The braking distance will increase if:
