C1 Motor vehicles with a Maximum weight (MW) exceeding 3.5 tonnes, including such a vehicle drawing a trailer with MW not exceeding 750kg
C1E A Combination of motor vehicle and trailer where: The tractor vehicle is in category C1
The MW of the trailer exceeds 750kg but not the unladen weight of the tractor vehicle The MW of the combination does not exceed 12 tonnes (in a licence issued before 1997, this category weight of 8.25 tonnes.
C Any motor vehicle having a MW exceeding 3.5 tonnes, other than a vehicle in category D,F,G or H, Including such a vehicle drawing a trailer with a MW not exceeding 750kg
CE Combination of a motor vehicle and trailer where the tractor vehicle is in category C but with the combination does not fall within that category
Tachographs and Digital Driver Cards
All vehicles exceeding permissible maximum weight (PMW) of 3.5 tonnes are required to operate with Tachographs as a means of recording a driver’s hours. It is a legal requirement to use a Tachograph chart or digital Tachograph card, to record evidence of driver hours for each journey, which must be used to record up to 24 hours. A chart or card records the following:
Driving time Periods of other duty Break or rest periods POA Distance travelled by the vehicle Speed of the vehicle Time
The instrument makes a recording on a Tachograph chart via a 3 styli which scratch’s the wax coated surface of the chart or in the case of digital drivers cards if records data digitally.
