SECTION NINE Training

Driver CPC Training

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is a compulsory qualification for LGV drivers in the UK. It has been introduced by the Driving Standards Agency to align UK standards with the 2009 EU Directive and to improve the knowledge and skills of professional drivers. Who requires a CPC qualification? Drivers who qualified for the C1 (7.5t) licence or higher before 10 th September 2009 have acquired rights and will not have to pass the initial qualification to drive professionally. Periodic training will need to be undertaken to maintain the validity of the licence. Drivers that have not passed the C1 (7.5t) qualification or higher before 10 th September 2009 do not have acquired rights and will need to pass an initial qualification before being able to drive professionally. The Driver CPC Initial qualification The initial qualification can be taken at the same time as the practical driving test. The qualification is in two parts:  Driver CPC theory test (case study theory)  Practical demonstration test

Periodic Training Drivers must complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to keep the driver Certificate of Professional Competence.

Course Modules include:  Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (SAFED)  Legal requirements  Health and Safety and Driver welfare

When to take periodic training Each 5-year period starts 5 years before the current Driver CPC qualification runs out.

For all acquired rights drivers this period started from 9 th September 2009. For those without acquired rights 35 hours of periodic training must be undertaken after qualifying for the practical test. Where to undergo training Only JAUPT approved courses taken with approved training centres count towards periodic training. Qualifying Drivers will receive a certificate upon completion of a driver CPC course to prove they have attended a training module. Once the 35 hours of training or the initial qualification has been completed a Driver Qualification Card will be issued automatically by DVLA.
