Driver Manual - Flipping book version

Drivers

Everyone has the right to travel on the road safely, whether by car, pedal cycle, horse or on foot. Drivers should take extra care to avoid collisions with vulnerable road users, because a pedestrian, cyclist, motorcyclist or horse rider will always come off worse.

Whenever and wherever you drive

 Watch your speed  Expect to encounter different road users  Be patient, give others time and room  Be ready for others to make mistakes  Concentrate on your driving  Never drive and use a mobile phone, you can easily be distracted from concentrating on the road  Drive considerately  Consider taking an advanced driver training The faster you drive, the less time you have to react and the harder you’ll hit if someone steps out in front of you. Hit a pedestrian at 20mph, they’ll almost definitely live. At 30mph, they have a one in five chance of dying, at 40mph, they’ll almost definitely die.  Stay well within the speed limit  Use your gears – staying in third gear helps your speed creeping above 30mph  Keep an eye out for signs and slow down before entering a lower speed limit  Slow down to 20mph or below around schools and homes to make our streets more family – friendly. Drive as though a child could step out in front of you at any time  Slow down to 20mph or below when passing pubs at closing time, A drunk pedestrian who stumbles into the road is foolish, but doesn’t deserve the death penalty Let kids live – slow down in town

If you drive for work, never speed just stick to schedule. If you think your schedules are unrealistic, or you’re unsure how to plan a safe schedule inform your transport manager.
