Driver Manual - Flipping book version

Be prepared on rural roads

However well you know a road, you can never know what’s round the corner. Rural roads are often used by cyclists, horse riders and local residents who are sometimes forced to use fast roads with no footpath to access schools and shops.  Never break the speed limit on rural roads  Slow down to 20mph in villages, even if the speed limit is higher  Slow right down for left-hand bends a cyclist could be around the corner  Slow right down for horse riders and give them plenty of room  Slow right down in wet, Icy, foggy or dark conditions  If you can’t see far ahead due to bends or poor visibility, drive so you could stop within the distance you can see. At 40mph in dry weather, you need 36meters to stop.at 30mph you need 23 meters and at 20mph you need 12 meters

Watch out when manoeuvring

Vulnerable road users are often killed and injured be drivers failing to spot them when manoeuvring.

 Before turning or manoeuvring, think if someone could be hidden in a blind-spot behind you, to the side, behind your windscreen’s side pillars or immediately in front of you  Carefully check your left side mirrors for cyclists before turning left  Look twice for bikes and motorcyclists when changing lanes or pulling out. They’re small and fast moving, so can be hard to spot  Avoid reversing. If you have to, do it really slowly, checking mirrors. If you drive a truck, use a banksman and/or reversing aids
