Professor of Double Bass VOLKAN ORHON received the 2021 Leopold La Fosse Studio Teacher Award! This award is presented annually by the Iowa String Teachers Association to an individual string teacher in the state of Iowa who has demonstrated excellence in the studio teaching setting.

BETH OAKES, director of the UI String Quartet Residency Program, received the Council on Teaching’s 2021 President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence. Many passionate, dedicated, and accomplished faculty members from around the University of Iowa are nominated for this prestigious and highly competitive award each year. This award is a testament to her dedication to her students, her high standards as an instructor, and her success in enhancing the quality of educational programs at the University of Iowa.

TRIO TONACITY took First Prize in the Chamber Music Competition at the Flute Society of Kentucky. The group is comprised of CARLOS LÓPEZ, MA bassoonist; GHADEER ABAIDO, DMA pianist; and GREG BARDWELL, MA flutist.

Composition PhD candidate MARK RHEAUME received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. He is a TA in the Department of Rhetoric. His philosophy of teaching and learning, classroom evaluations, and the strong support from students and faculty stood out among the many superb candidates and clearly demonstrate his excellence in teaching.

DR. MARY ADAMEK received a Certificate of Distinction in the 6th annual Student Supervisor of the Year Awards. Dr. Adamek was nominated by student workers and selected for the certificate based upon her tremendous work with the Music Therapy department. According to School of Music Director Tammie Walker, Dr. Adamek has “built such an incredible Music Therapy program because of [her] support of students. Not just in terms of curriculum and currency, but deep commitment to mentoring and modeling.”

In the 2021 Schubert Club Scholarship Competition of Minneapolis, two saxophonists and a flutist earned places. First Prize and the Marjorie Porter Scholarship Award went to DMA saxophonist YO-YO SU. DMA saxophonist EUGENE RYOO earned an honorable mention; CHRISTIAN LAMPKIN, MA flutist, took the Thelma Hunter Schubert Club Award.

Assistant Professor of Oboe COURTNEY MILLER was named a 2021-2023 College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Scholar. This faculty development award recognizes faculty candidates for promotion who excel in both teaching and scholarship or creative work.
