Dont Miss The Flexo Industry’s Premiere Marketing Opportunity

The earnings increase in North America was attrib- uted in part to higher sale prices as well as higher sales volumes and improved operations. Overall for the quarter, IP reported net earnings of $395 million or 95 cents per share. That compares to net earnings of $80 million or 19 cents per share in the second quarter and $312 million in net earnings a year ago. “We are excited about the platform for future growth created by this combination,” said Graphic Packaging President and CEO Michael Doss. “We ex- pect the transaction will significantly increase our mill production and converting scale, meaningfully increase our exposure to the growing foodservice market, provide significant runway to realize syner- gies, and drive strong financial results.” Doss described the $75 million in synergies as “compelling”, which will be driven by cost reduc- tions, increased paperboard integration, and procure- ment and mill efficiencies. Graphic Packaging is a provider of paper-based pack- aging for a variety of products to food, beverage and other consumer product companies. The company op- erates on a global basis, and is one of the largest pro- ducers of folding cartons in the United States. WestRock Recognized With PPC Awards

Sustainable Packaging To Attract Consumers In 2018 A new Mintel study on consumer trends has high- lighted sustainable packaging as an important driver for food manufacturers. The research firm said recy- cling campaigns and government bans are turning consumers focus toward green alternatives. In its Consumer Trends report 2018, Mintel discusses four major areas that it predicts will guide the hand of the average buyer. These areas were ocean-friendly packaging, positive messages to teenagers, business transparency and regulation protecting consumers’ information will all have their place next year. Mintel research found that 73 percent of respon- dents would like to see more food and drink that is guaranteed to be sourced from unpolluted waters; 72 percent would be interested in buying products made with recycled plastic; and 79 percent believed people should be incentivized to recycle plastic. The company predicted that companies will try to distinguish themselves in the green field, often through promises and campaigns to highlight how they are tackling the problem of plastics in the ocean.

WestRock Company, Norcross, Georgia, was recog- nized for design excellence at the 74th annual North American Paperboard Packaging Competi- tion. The company won 13 awards — the most of any entrant — including the Eco Award for its 8- pack designs for Budweiser and Bud Light’s 16 oz. aluminum bottles. The awards recognize cartons that represent the best in converting excellence, innovation, and sus- tainability that the North American folding carton in- dustry has provided its customers over the past year. The Eco Award The Eco Award recognizes an outstanding use of pa- perboard in replacing a non-paperboard substrate, creating extremely sustainable packaging, and/or fos- tering materials reductions or better cubing. In addition to the Eco Award,WestRock earned four gold and eight excellence awards for a variety of packaging solutions. CanCollarT,WestRock’s environ- mentally friendly, paperboard-based multipack solu- tion for cans, was awarded gold in all three categories.

Apple CEO Plants Trees At Iggesund

Iggesund is a good example of a climate-smart com- bine where we feed in forest raw materials and pro- duce bioenergy, paper pulp and paperboard. Major investments over a long time plus a system in balance are a prerequisite for a sustainable value chain. The Iggesund combine binds 0.7 million tons of CO2.” FTA Europe Diamond Awards To Be Held In Milan The FTA Europe Diamond Awards 2018 will be held at the hotel Barceló in Milan,Italy. The ceremony will take place on Wednesday May 30, 2018, during the period of the Print4All Fair. After a first edition in Dusseldorf, Germany, in June 2016, with more than 230 participants and 30 flexo companies awarded for their works, FTA Europe will continue to celebrate the best of flexo printing. In 2016, 10 categories were awarded, plus the Best in Flexo (the best sample among all the categories). In 2018, some categories will be added, increasing the number of companies that will be awarded and the quality of the event. The announcement of the companies selected to participate in the Awards will be communicated in late March 2018, after the jury meeting and evaluation.

Apple’s chief execTim Cook visited Iggesund in Swe- den to discover more about the sustainability work that lies behind the paperboard material Invercote. The manufacturer, Iggesund Paperboard, is part of the Holmen forest industry group and is reportedly at the forefront of sustainability. Present to discuss with Tim Cook were Holmen’s chief executive Hen- rik Sjölund and Iggesund Paperboard’s chief execu- tive Daniel Peltonen. The Holmen Group produces more than 30 million tree seedlings annually to meet Sweden’s legislated requirements for replanting after felling. “A visit to the breathtaking forests of northern Swe- den with @IggesundAB, our partners in innovation and sustainable packaging,” tweeted Cook after his visit to Iggesund. The Apple chief executive also planted his own tree in Iggesund’s forests as he fol- lowed the whole process from forest management to finished packaging. “For Holmen it is self-evident to start with sustain- able forestry,” said Sjölund.“We grow trees with an 80- to 90-year time frame, with the timber being used to build houses. We make the paperboard from pulp- wood from the forest and chips from the sawmill.
