WHAT’S GOING ON AROUND ATLAS PT?

(continued from outside) Bekah and I attended Atlas’s first PT job fair as a vendor! The University of Maryland held their annual Physical Therapy Career Fair for their 2nd and 3rd year students. 1st year student and Atlas alum Jake stopped by to say hi! Sam is rocking with our Rotator Cuff and Shoulder Pain Workshops! It’s a hot new topic for our free seminars, and each time we answer some really good questions. We made it to the beach two more times after Labor Day! The girls and I enjoyed an amazing sunset, they said it looked like the Northern Lights (from Frozen)! We were thankful all we got from Hurricane Florence was the sky show. Another evening we caught a sunset with high school friends and their 2 kids then played a few rounds of the card game Coup. The guys were better at bluffing. TJ traveled to Denver, Colorado for a PT clinic seminar. Traveling solo opened him up to be a shoulder to nap on during the trip there! It snowed while he was there, a nice October dusting!

NOVEMBER 2018

The girls are ballerinas! They started their weekly dance class and love learning the new steps to practice in every open space they can find! TJ and I each had a turn in Kathryn’s class to help out. I had an easy day filled with apples! Taste testing, making prints with them, and writing the letter A. TJ helped with picture day and got to see all the crazy tricks and jokes the pro used to get the amazing smiles he always gets! Samantha is dressing up for all of her Spirit Days including twin day with ponytails, a JoJo shirt and jeans with her friend and pajama day, picking a pair with a Dachshund that wraps around the top. She’s tracking her reading time and picked out a Disney Never Girls chapter book from the media center. We’re getting a lot of use from their playset with the cooler weather. It took a while for them to stop asking to use the hose to turn their slide into a water slide! Happy Birthday to Me! No better way to celebrate my “trip around the sun” than with a family trip to the punkin farm, a date night with pizza and ice cream, and 2 family dinners! ~ Dr. Laura Sanner, Owner Atlas PT

Healthy Recipe

Honey Garlic Shrimp

INGREDIENTS • 1/3 cup honey • 1/4 cup soy sauce (reduced sodium) • 1 Tablespoon minced garlic • 1 lb medium uncooked shrimp, peeled & deveined • 2 teaspoons olive oil

“In the 6 months since my surgery, I’ve returned to almost full activity.” “When I tore my ACL earlier this year, I immediately called Laura and the team at Atlas. They had helped me with hip pain previously and I knew their attention to detail, passion for their craft and concern with making their patients better than before would give great results for my knee. In the 6 months since my surgery, I’ve returned to almost full activity. I owe my progression to the hard work of Laura, Bekah and the whole Atlas team. I look forward to taking the lacrosse field in the spring with a healthy, functional knee and I couldn’t have done it without Atlas!” - Laura T.

1. Whisk the honey, soy sauce, and garlic together in a medium bowl. 2. Place shrimp in a large zipped-top bag or Tupperware. Pour 1/2 of the marinade mixture on top, give it all a shake or stir, then allow shrimp to marinate in the refrigerator for 15 minutes, or up to 8-12 hours. Cover and refrigerate the rest of the marinade for step 3. (Time-saving tip: while the shrimp is marinating, steam broccoli and microwave some quick brown rice). 3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Place shrimp in the skillet. Discard used marinade. Cook shrimp on one side until pink— about 45 seconds—then flip shrimp over. Pour in remaining marinade and cook it all until shrimp is cooked through, about 1 minute more. 4. Serve!

HERE’S HOW TO HELP MOBILITY AND MUSCLE TENSION WITHOUT MEDICATION… THE BUZZ ABOUT DRY NEEDLING. WHAT IS IT? WHAT DOES IT DO?

Do you suffer from constant knots in your shoulders, legs or back?

Does your mobility limit your life?

Why Dry Needling... Dry Needling eliminates knots, tension and improves how you move without medication. What Is Dry Needling? It is used to treat pain that comes from your muscles. A small, solid needle is placed directly into the muscle knot or spot that hurts to help break the pain cycle. How Does Dry Needling Work? By using dry needling your goal is to eliminate pain. Dry needling does this by: • Stopping chemicals your body releases that trigger pain. • Relieving stubborn muscle knots. • Helping your body move better once the muscle knots are gone. • Allows you to use your muscles the right way when they don’t hurt. •Headaches, evenheadachescausedby jawpain, migraines, and tension. • Leg and pain in the butt (sciatica, hamstring strains, calf tightness or spasm). Isn’t Dry Needling The Same As Acupuncture? Both use thin needles, but dry needling uses typically one at a time, where acupuncture uses many. Acupuncture typically leaves the needles in for an extended period time in the skin. For dry needling they are inserted directly into the muscle for an average of 1-2 minutes to each muscle knot. What Does It Help? Anyone with… • Neck, back, shoulder, or arm pain.

Does It Hurt? Most patients say they don’t even feel the needle go in. When the muscle reacts to the needle sometimes the patients say they can feel an electrical zing; others feel a deep cramping sensation, both are good results. The relief or benefits are felt later once the muscle knot is gone. How Many Treatments Does It Typically Take? Typically, it takes several visits to get a positive reaction to take place. We are trying to get the body to ease the knots, get the body to stop releasing the pain chemicals, and allow your body to finally move normally. One session may reduce the pain and shrink the area that hurts but each additional application helps reduce pain and get you back to normal, faster. Who Is It For? • People with muscle pain or knots • People who can’t quite get to 100% with Physical Therapy alone • People who have just that one spot that hurts • High school age or older

SEE WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT ATLAS PT

“I can walk my dog, Atlas, for longer than I used to.” “I went into PT just hoping to learn a few exercises I could do without hurting myself. What I found instead was a friendly, helpful environment that has benefitted every aspect of my life. I can stand and walk more easily. I can walk my dog, Atlas, for longer than I used to. Plus, when normal exercises weren’t quite enough, I tried dry needling and I was shocked at how much it helped my muscle pain! It even minimized the constant clicking in my knees.” - Chelsie C.

“Every time I came in with a headache and got needled, the headache was gone.” “My experience was amazing. Before coming here, I was dizzy 24/7 and had moments where the room was spinning. I had no balance and migraines every day. Now, I can look up, down, side to side, and be fine! No room spinning and no migraines. Every time I came in with a headache and got needled, the headache was gone. I now feel like I have more muscle movement as well. I feel an amazing difference.” - Stacie P.

“...it’s helping me get my life back, piece by piece.” “I receive dry needling for chronic low back pain. It is uncomfortable, but tolerable. And it’s definitely worth it! It’s allowed me to participate more actively in PT, which has enabled me to begin to do more activity outside of PT, like kayaking. Combined with the rest of my treatment plan, it’s helping me get my life back, piece by piece.” - Ashlyn D.

“Working with the Atlas therapists has been truly a journey...” “I have been dealing with chronic pain, and attempting to manage it, for most of my life. Working with the Atlas therapists has been truly a journey; one that has brought the most beneficial success in my pain management endeavors to date. We reached a plateau of what I was capable of doing with physical therapy alone. It was recommended by my rheumatologist and my physical therapist that I attempt a dry needling session. The goal of dry needling is “to improve Neuro-Musculo-Skeletal function, restore motion and possibly induce a healing response to the tissue.” At the skilled hands of Lauren, I can attest to the fact that I have gained further mobility and a reduction in my overall pain. I have since done several dry needling sessions and each needling session, along with continued physical therapy, has benefited me and unlocked new potential. The dry needling performed at Atlas Physical Therapy, in my opinion, is excellent. Lauren communicates extremely well, is very professional, and has very steady hands.” - Jason H.
