duration. A temporary full-closure of the site, with posted detour routes, was scheduled for late summer. But construction crews encountered some unexpected problems with some of the underground work and the site remained closed for several weeks, with all traffic detoured around through residential neighbourhoods. Rainy weather conditions added to the delays. “It was a long project,” McMahon said. “A lot of underground infrastructure and not a lot of space to work in.”
He noted that so far the project is within CVEHFU/FYUTQSJOHTXPSLTDIFEVMFDBMMT for completion of the underground mains along High Street, between Hamil and Mill Streets, replacing the temporary winter asphalt sidewalks and curbings with concrete versions up to Pottery Lane, plus any lands- caping and paving work needed. “It’s a large project on a main road in a small village,” McMahon said. “It’s pro- HSFTTFETMPXMZ CVUJUTQSPHSFTTFEXFMM8FE like to thank everybody for their patience.”
Traffic is back to normal for the winter in the heart of the Village of Vankleek Hill. But next spring residents will have to put up with another few weeks of disruption as construction crews finish the rest of the work on the High Street/ Highway 34 main improvement project. “There’s still a portion of critical stuff to do between Hamil Street and Mill Street,” said James McMahon, Champlain Township QVCMJDXPSLTTVQFSJOUFOEFOUi8FSFMPPLJOH at about 59 days or so of work to complete the whole program next year. The undergound water and sewer mains and storm sewer lines for that section of Highway 34 through the village still need replacing. McMahon said the mains are in good enough shape to get through one more winter season. Residents and business owners have had to live with detours and other disruptions to traffic at the village’s Main Street intersec- tion with High Street and Highway 34, while contractor Cornwall Gravel’s construction crews dug up the road from the intersection and along High Street, for several blocks, to replace aging water and sewer lines and underground storm sewer drains. The original plan for the project was to have the construction zone open for single- lane directed traffic for part of the project’s
—photo Gregg Chamberlain
