Did you know?
Cape Clear Island, Co. Cork
Explore the dramatic history of Ireland’s coastline at the Lusitania Museum and Old Head Signal Tower, perched above the Atlantic at Kinsale’s Old Head. The restored 1804 signal tower – one of 81 built to warn of French invasion – offers panoramic views from its rooftop walkway. Inside, exhibits trace the tower’s story and commemorate the RMS Lusitania, torpedoed in 1915 just 19 km offshore. Artefacts, survivor memorabilia and a moving 20‑metre memorial wave sculpture honour all aboard the ship. With a café, gift shop and scenic coastal walks nearby, it’s a powerful and an enriching stop on the Wild Atlantic Way.
Maratacht on Cape Clear Island provides Gaeltacht residential marine‑activity summer camps for teenagers, offering an unforgettable adventure centred on watersports, sustainability and the Irish language. Limited to 25 participants, the camps include kayaking, snorkelling, stand‑up paddleboarding, ornithology and rocky‑shore ecology, along with explorations of social geography and maritime history. Daily activities integrate Irish in a supportive, enjoyable way, and every camp begins with a scenic 50‑minute ferry trip from Baltimore through Carbery’s Hundred Isles to this enchanting offshore island.
In 1631, the Sack of Baltimore saw Barbary pirates storm this West Cork village by night, abducting residents into slavery in one of the most dramatic raids in Irish coastal history.
