Allihies Copper Mine Museum, housed in the old Methodist church in Allihies on the Beara Peninsula, tells the story of copper mining from the Bronze Age through to the 20th century, vividly portraying miners’ lives and the technologies they used. Exhibits include detailed depictions of 19th‑century steam‑ and water‑powered machinery, the ingenious Man Engine that lowered miners deep underground, geological displays, and original cost books that reveal the hardships of the mining community. The museum also explores the strong historical links with Cornish miners and with Allihies emigrants who later worked in Butte, Montana. Visitors can enjoy an on‑site café with views of Ballydonegan Beach and follow the marked Copper Mine Trail, which passes mine sites, reservoirs, a gunpowder magazine and spectacular mountain scenery.

Standing above Baltimore Harbour, Dún na Séad Castle is a striking restored fortress with an 800‑year story shaped by Norman settlers, the O’Driscoll clan, pirate raids and Cromwellian troops. Built in 1215, it served as the O’Driscolls’ chief residence for three centuries and was a centre of their maritime trade and piracy. A visit today includes the atmospheric Great Hall – furnished with tapestries and historical displays – as well as archaeological finds and information panels that trace the castle’s long history. Guests can also climb to the battlements for panoramic views of Baltimore Harbour and the surrounding islands.

Ireland’s only cable car and the only one to cross open seawater in Europe, the Dursey Cable Car, connects the island to the mainland. A marked walking trail takes you on a 14km loop of the island. Dursey is a favourite for whale, dolphin and bird watchers and also boasts many historical features. The cable car runs continuously back and forth daily, year-round. Space on the cable car is limited with the trip of 374 metres taking 7.5 minutes each way.
