Allihies Copper Mine Museum, housed in the old Methodist church in Allihies on the Beara Peninsula, tells the story of copper mining from the Bronze Age through to the 20th century, vividly portraying miners’ lives and the technologies they used. Exhibits include detailed depictions of 19th‑century steam‑ and water‑powered machinery, the ingenious Man Engine that lowered miners deep underground, geological displays, and original cost books that reveal the hardships of the mining community. The museum also explores the strong historical links with Cornish miners and with Allihies emigrants who later worked in Butte, Montana. Visitors can enjoy an on‑site café with views of Ballydonegan Beach and follow the marked Copper Mine Trail, which passes mine sites, reservoirs, a gunpowder magazine and spectacular mountain scenery.
