Progressive Label Purchases Mark Andy Press Progressive Label Manufacturing, Commerce, Cali- fornia, has installed a new Mark Andy Performance Series Press. The company is going green with the new P-5 LED/UV technology. Owner Dave Carr started his packaging and label career more than 26 years ago and has pushed for a low carbon footprint before it became mainstream. Progressive Label Manufacturing plans to continue its tradition of eco-consciousness with the new in- vestment in the Performance Series. “Not only will the UV LED technology allow us to print food-safe labels, but we will be able to cut down on waste by more than 50 percent,” said Carr. Progressive said, as well, that it will be able to print four times faster with the new press. Carr said that Progressive Label has doubled in size in the last three years. This growth, assisted by a Mark Andy 2200, helped them reach the point where they decided to expand and update equipment. According to the research findings from Future Mar- ket Insights’ report, titled Smart Labels Market: Glob- al Industry Analysis and Opportunity Assessment, 2016–2026 , nearly 400,000 thousand units of smart labels sold globally by 2016 were accounted by Radio- Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, which amounted to an estimated $2,493.9 million. Surging demand for RFID tags in the global retail industry have instrumented the boost in sales of smart labels, globally. Furthermore, the advantages of RFID smart labels in maintaining, tracking and updating stock & inventory databases is predicted to continue driving their demand around the globe in the coming years. The global market for smart labels amassed rev- enues worth $4.7 billion by 2016, and is likely to reach $22.6 billion market value by the end of 2026. During the forecast period, the global smart labels market size is anticipated to expand robustly at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 17 percent. The retail sector is expected to continue to provide growth in global smart labels sales, while warehousing businesses are expected to adopt smart labelling. Flexographic and gravure printing technologies are predicted to dominate the global smart labels market in terms of revenues. Over the forecast period, more than $8 billion in revenues will be accounted by flex- ographic smart labels. Smart Labels Market To Hit $22.6B By 2026

Diversified Labeling Converts Label Waste To Clean Energy Diversified Labeling Solutions (DLS), a PS label converter with five U.S. locations headquartered in Itasca, Illinois, has found a cost-effective waste management solution that saves 2 million pounds of label matrix annually from reaching landfills. At the same time, the solution provides a clean burn- ing fuel source for energy companies. This is part of DLS’ commitment to improving the environ- ment and creating sustainable ways to operate its business. Working in conjunction with Channeled Resources who sources and qualifies label feedstock for energy companies; waste hauler Republic Services; and Con- vergen Energy, a waste converter and power compa- ny; DLS now has its label production waste turned into fuel pellets that are then used to power an elec- tric utility plant. The pellets are burned as a substitute for coal, de- creasing the need for the fossil fuel and reducing CO2 emissions by 40 percent.

A HEALTHY PLAN FOR BUILDING PROFITS

FINAT Launches #LABELicious Competition International label association FINAT has launched its #LABELicious competition to attract fresh, creative and enthusiastic industry talent. The initiative follows the finding of the latest FINAT Radar industry survey that discovered how challenging it is for the industry to attract a newly skilled next generation workforce. The competition also marks FINAT’s 60th anniver- sary, and its aim is to increase awareness among stu- dents and young professionals about the creative, technical and leadership skills involved in shaping to- morrow’s labels and label sector. The goal is to educate students and young professionals about the exciting and challenging opportunities the industry offers and how their innovative spirits can make a difference. The #LABELicious competition features three cate- gories, all of which have an important sustainability aspect. These include: • Brand Design : The winning entry will demon- strate how in 2025 a branded label will create an out- standing experience, competitive advantage and added value for a brand in its own product category. • Smart / Intelligent / Multifunctional Labels :The winning entry will demonstrate how technology adds value to a label through new functionality, other than branding alone. • Out of The Box : The winning entry will demon- strate how out-of-the-box-thinking, combining both creative design and technology, offers new applica- tions and added-value possibilities in product label- ing. This could also present a vision of the entrant’s future work environment in the industry. As further details and rules for the competition are being developed, the project is designed to demon- strate how the label profession is evolving, how la- bels and adjacent technologies are key to the success of brands and industry processes, and ultimately, why the label industry is an attractive work option for young talent. FINAT plans to develop this project throughout 2018 and 2019. It will work with a wide range of partners and stakeholders, including companies in the label industry, national associations, national and international media, and partners from vocational ed- ucational institutions and universities. The YMC will hold its fifth Global Congress from September 5-7 in Bucharest, Romania. This year’s pro- gram will focus on best practices in HR aspects, inter- nal relations and managing workforce, logistical challenges, and future developments in packaging from a brand owner's perspective.
