Campagne contre la distraction au volant
comparativement à 57 décès liés à la conduite avec facultés a#aiblies et 44 décès causés par l’excès de vitesse. En tout, 236 contraventions pour conduite distraite ont été distribuées dans la comté de Russell seulement. L’utilisation au volant du téléphone mobile et de tout appareil électronique peut contribuer à la distraction au volant. Les Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell se dressent notamment parmi les premières régions o ù les cas de distraction au volant sont les plus élevés. Il y aurait, d’ailleurs, plus de cas recensés dans cette région qu’à Ottawa. «Malheureusement, la distraction au volant est de plus en plus présente. Pour tenter de diminuer ce comportement, nous devons agir rapidement», a ajouté Sabrina Rodrigue. Récemment, le ministère des Transports de l’Ontario a notamment fait hausser le coût de l’amende à 280$ pour une première infraction. Une révision du règlement est actuellement en cours a!n d’inclure des points d’inaptitude pour les conducteurs fautifs. Durant la campagne, 10 000 cartes informatiques bilingues seront distribuées dans le cadre des di#érentes activités communautaires demême que 10 000 sent- bon pour la voiture qui seront disponibles chez les concessionnaires locaux et 20 000 napperons distribués dans les restaurants locaux. À cela s’ajoutent deux enseignes routières qui seront également installées, dont une à Rockland.

La distraction au volant est maintenant la première cause de décès sur les routes en Ontario. A!n de sensibiliser la communauté à cette réalité, le Comité d’action régional pour la sécurité (CARS) de Ruseell lance la campagne Yeux Devant. C’est grâce à l’appui du ministère des Transports de l’Ontario et de ses partenaires que CARS de Russell a développé cette campagne pour les membres de la communauté, qui a commencéle 14 novembre 2014 et se poursuivra tout au long de l’année 2015. «Notre projet comprend du matériel promotionnel visant à augmenter la reconnaissance des dangers de la distraction au volant et ce, dans le but d’in"uencer les comportements à risque des conducteurs de tous les âges», a a$rmé Sabrina Rodrigue, gestionnaire de programme aux Services d’urgence de Prescott-Russell. Selon les statistiques de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario (PPO), les gens qui composent des textos au volant sont 23 fois plus à risque d’avoir une collision. C’est en 2013 que la PPO a rapporté la distraction au volant comme première cause de décès sur les routes. L’an dernier, 78 décès liés à la distraction au volant ont été recensés

Police !les Burglars made o# with some liquor af- ter a break-in at a cabin in the St-Jacques Road neighbourhood Nov. 3. The property owner called police to report that a cabin located in behind the main building was broken into and vandalized. An unknown quantity of liquor was also taken. Bus collision A 46-year-old Limoges man faces char- ges under the Highway Tra$c Act re- sulting from a collision incident involv- ing a school bus. Police were called Nov. 5 about a reported collision on Calypso Road near Limoges. At the time of the ac- cident, the bus had 22 students on board. Police incident report noted the bus was stopped to pick up another student when the collision occurred. No one was injured. The man driving the vehicle that struck the bus is now charged with failing to stop for a school bus and with being a Class G1 driver’s licence holder in care and control of a vehicle without a quali!ed driver as chaperone at the time. Drug charges An Ottawa man has an upcoming ap- pointment at provincial court in L’Orignal after he was stopped near Limoges earlier this month. Mansour Mahood, 21, of Ottawa, is charged with drug possession, failure to comply with a recognizance order, and three counts of failure to comply with the conditions of a police undertaking. The charges resulted after police inves- tigated a report of a speeding vehicle on Highway 417 near Limoges. Police inter- cepted a grey Kia Optima and searched the vehicle after noting a suspicious odour from within. Police found and seized a small amount of an unspeci!ed drug. A computer check also revealed the driver of the car was bound by several court or- ders. Business burglary Police made a repeat visit to a St-Isidore business to deal with a burglary attempt.
The alarm went o# at Dalmen Windows and Doors just after 10:30 p.m., Nov. 12. Two OPP o$cers investigated and discov- ered signs of entry through a window. Trucks parked in the yard su#ered some damage. Signs indicated the burglars tried to take some of the trucks which were loaded with items related to doors and windows. So far no follow-up reports to police from the business owners indicate anything missing as a result of the bur- glary attempt. Two weeks prior to the Nov. 12 incident a truck was stolen from the business site. The truck was loaded with doors, win- dows, and various tools. It was later found in Ottawa, burned to ruin. Total value of that theft, including the loss of the truck, is estimated at $135,000. Both burglar- ies remain under investigation. Vehicle break-in A Casselman woman thought at !rst she was just a victim of a prankster. She soon discovered she was the target of a thief. Police received a call Nov. 6 from a homeowner on Principal Street. The call- er reported that the day before someone threw a padlock stu#ed with mud at her house. The following morning the woman discovered someone had broken into her vehicle and stolen some items left inside. Anyone with information about the theft can call Const. Bad rider Police were called to deal with a rowdy bus passenger during a Greyhound bus run on Highway 417 on Nov. 3. The driver radioed a report that one of the passen- gers was becoming unruly. Police inter- cepted the bus along the highway near Russell Township and escorted a 44-year- old Cornwall man o# the bus and charged him under the Ontario Liquor Act with drinking liquor in public other than at a licensed bar, a private function, or his own home.

La population d’Embrun est de plus en plus grandissante - faites un petit tour dans les rangs du voisinage; il importe grandement de prévoir pour les services culturels nécessaires, aussi bien que pour ceux de l’eau, des égouts et de la circulation. Une bibliothèque publique, c’est l’âme d’une communauté. Les espaces présentement disponibles à l’école La Croisée ne sont pas adéquats et ne correspondent même pas aux normes d’une bibliothèque publique en Ontario. D’autant plus, malgré les mesures temporaires, ils minent la sécurité des enfants qui fréquentent cette école. Il nous faut donc absolument un nouveau local équitable. Durant cette élection partielle pour la mairie, pour nous aider à faire notre choix, il nous faut analyser la promesse de chacun des candidats qui recherchent notre confiance et notre vote. Le candidat idéal doit d’abord « a!rmer publiquement que notre local actuel de la bibliothèque d’Embrun n’est pas adéquat pour desservir la population du secteur de l’Est et qu’il ou elle est prêt à appuyer le Conseil de bibliothèque et l’expertise de son personnel dans ses démarches de planification pour améliorer les services aux résidents de ce secteur ». Des contribuables préoccupés par l’avenir de la Bibliothèque d’Embrun * vote par téléphone et internet de 9 h le 12 décembre jusqu’à 20 h le 15 décembre .
