Vankleek Hill gets its Irish on!

St. Patrick’s Day weekend was bright with sun and blustery with a bit of wind. Fair weather some folks might say for a bit of Irish fun and a St. Patrick’s Day Parade. “We had fantastic weather,” said Suzanne Hocquard, Vankleek Hill’s new special events coordinator. “And we had great help from Champlain Township and the fire depart- ment with the parade route.” This year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the first major special event for the commu- nity without the guidance of Phil Arber, the man who organized and coordinated so many cultural events and festivals for the village and the township in général, over the years. Phil Arber passed away late last year and Hocquard acknowledged his loss and support. “It was my first (special event) without my Phil,” she said. “I got great feedback from everybody andmany are pleased that we are continuing his legacy.” Besides half a dozen float entries, this year’s St. Patrick’s Parade also saw a few last- minute entries into the lineup from individu- als who wanted to show their Irish cheer. Hocquard and others involved in Vankleek Hill’s special events group will now turn their attention to preparing for the CanadianHeritage Festival—formerlyMay Fest—on May 20.
