King's Business - 1958-11

she has a very fine voice. But she is evidently the only person who thinks so because she is seldom asked to sing a solo. But Helen feels that it is very im portant to her self-esteem to be con sidered a beautiful singer. A dilem ma? Yes, because the little halo which she has so carefully placed around her voice will naturally be trampled upon when other singers are asked to sing solos, and she is not. So Helen quickly rationalizes (thinks up) some excuses which will not make her feel badly. One of her excuses is this: “Oh, I don’t care if the choir director does not choose me to sing solos. I can’t ex pect him to. He’s partial. He has his favorites. Other singers play up to him so that they will he selected to sing the solos. But me? Never! I’m above that. I have character. I have standards! I wouldn’t bow and scrape to that guy even if he would let me sing every Sunday.” And this little piece of rationali zation is a real cushion to Helen’s feelings. By thinking this way, she can continue to consider herself a wonderful soloist. And the fact that she is never asked to sing doesn’t bother her in the least, because the choir director is “all wrong.” (P.S. Rationalization is common!) Emotionally Disturbed Q. My little granddaughter causes us much concern because she sucks her thumb most of the time. She also constantly thumps her head against the couch or against the bed on which she is lying. She has pulled out nearly all of her hair. I believe it is an emotional problem. Please discuss the causes. A. It is possible that this behavior, which we see quite frequently, might be cause by conditions in the home. On the other hand, it might be an indication of a physical diffi culty, or even a neurological im pairment. However, the only accur ate way to determine the cause of this problem is to have your child examined by a p r o f e s s i o n a l l y trained person. I suggest that if the child is of school age, he be ex amined by the school psychologist. If this is not possible, I suggest that you take the child to a private psy chologist for professional diagnosis.
