Enliven the QC Arts Help Define, Experience the Creative Capital of the Midwest

BY JONATHAN TURNER

T he arts are so prevalent and thriving in the Quad Cities, you’d only have time to sample a fraction of what’s happening. And the bustling, passionate scene – live music, theater, visual art, and dance – has grown in recent years. These creative pursuits are vital to any community and help define what’s great about it. Arts strengthen the local economy, bring people together for unforgettable and inspiring experiences, boost mental health, drive tourism, attract new residents and businesses, and improve academic performance. The QC is known for its welcoming, small-town vibe, and amenities of much larger cities, without the traffic or high prices for performances and art exhibitions. The cultural community not only has new venues but has also improved in its goal to be accessible and

inclusive. The amount of free and low-cost arts options is mind-boggling. Arts are key to a sense of space and feeling connected. Each year, the QC offers a vast menu of opportunities that make life-changing memories. The 110-year-old QC Symphony Orchestra alone presents a dazzling array of concerts annually – including classical masterworks, pops, and chamber music. In 2025, highlights include “Omar’s Journey” (excerpts from a 2023 Pulitzer-winning opera Feb. 1-2) and “Rhapsody in Blue” (April 5-6). Opera Quad Cities will mount the classic “Die Fledermaus” in June in Bettendorf. Atlanta Dawn Artist // ATLD Murals

A vital part of what makes the QC vibrant and inviting is artist Atlanta Dawn. A Moline High grad, she attended the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and started her career decorating storefront windows in the surrounding areas with hand-painted whimsical illustrations, which she’s done for years now. That grew into small interior mural jobs and sign painting, which led to the creation of larger exterior public murals, including on 18th Street in Bettendorf, and The Palace Tavern and Hey Bryans in Downtown East Moline. Two of her recent and largest projects are murals on the rooftop of the new YWCA building and one of two at Arts

Alley in Downtown Rock Island. Dawn was honored by Quad City Arts as 2024 Visual Artist of the Year, in its Community Impact Awards. Dawn launched Art on the Bend in June 2024, a rotating gallery at The Rust Belt, in the event space between the concert venue and Midwest Ale Works. “I love the longevity that murals have in the community,” she says. “It leaves

The swanky, sophisticated Last Picture House movie theater in Downtown Davenport (including a cocktail lounge and rooftop bar) opened in November 2023, founded by filmmakers and Bettendorf natives Scott Beck & Bryan Woods. It has two indoor screens (with incredible sound) and one on the second-story roof, showing a mix of first-run, indie, art-house and cult films. Common Chord , which has been in the 1892 Redstone Building in Downtown Davenport since 2004, is renowned for its second-floor Redstone Room (which includes a bar). It’s beloved as one of the best spots to hear live rock, jazz and folk, blending local and touring artists. The nearby Capitol Theatre on West 3rd Street is a crown jewel for the QC. Originally opened in 1903, and painstakingly restored after years of closure, it has a 1,500-person capacity and regularly features touring musical acts. East on the same block is the equally gorgeous, 2,400-seat Adler Theatre . Celebration Belle

Riverboat Twilight

Great River Road

The Mississippi River: Heart of the QC BY MELISSA CHURCH Some call it the Mighty Mississippi but we call it home. The Mississippi River bridges Iowa and Illinois, creating each state’s unique shapes, but also bringing each side closer together. In the Quad Cities, the Mississippi River is an integral part of our community. Bringing citizens outside to explore, strengthening neighborly bonds, and creating picturesque landscapes; the Mississippi River is the heart of the Quad Cities. 2,350 miles of a majority south-flowing current, the Quad Cities is the only area where the current flows east to west. That’s no problem for the nearly 12,000 ships that use the river to transport goods, agriculture, and people, across it. A great way to get on the river is a river cruise. The Celebration Belle features dining and sightseeing cruises alongside their narrated tours and themed events. The Riverboat Twilight takes you on a journey north for sightseeing and overnight stays. The Channel Cat Water Taxi connects our cities, ferrying guests between ports on both sides of the Mississippi. Sailing alongside local riverboats are Viking River Cruises and American Cruise Lines . These ships bring visitors from all over the world to our region. Another way to ride the river is Floatzilla . Grab your kayak and float with hundreds of others as they all experience the bond the river brings to the Quad Cities.

There are other ways to enjoy the Mississippi River outside of sailing. With the Quad Cities’ four distinct seasons, there is always something fun to do along the shore. Each side hosts beautiful paths to walk, then stop

to enjoy the glistening lights shining off the river’s surface. Miles of riverfront trails take you through parks, hills, wetlands, and woodlands, to showcase the diversity of life neighboring the river. Slow it down with a picnic, searching for the perfect fall foliage, making snow angels, or painting the colors each season brings to the Quad Cities. The river is our family’s backdrop, a source of memories and connection. Life flows from water, and here in the Quad Cities, the Mississippi is our heartbeat—binding us, shaping us, and making this place home.
