We are world-class and hassle-free. A little quirky and unconventional? Absolutely. But that’s what makes us a compelling community to visit, live, and so much more. We are the only place where the Mighty Mississippi flows east to west along its 2,341-mile stretch. Our region hosted the first NFL football game, invented chiropractic care, sparked the idea for the modern-day computer, created soft-serve ice cream and the bread slicer, and yes, we even have our own style of pizza. Global home to John Deere, the Rock Island Arsenal, a dynamic and immersive arts & culture community, scenic riverfronts, 100+ miles of trails, year-round events which deliver fun for all, an amazing culinary, craft, wine, and spirits scene, and diverse attractions that will capture your wonder, the Quad Cities offers you boundless opportunities to explore and connect with a destination built by its people and the warmth and energy they bring. Becca and Red Co-Owners // Abernathy’s

From the time they were teenagers, Becca Nicke and Nicole “Red” Perez were drawn together by their shared love for self-expression. The two met while working at a shop in Red’s hometown of LeClaire, Iowa, and quickly became close friends. What started as a teenage job turned into a lifelong partnership built on artistry and the shared dream of creating a space that celebrates individuality. Years later, that dream became reality with the opening of Abernathy’s, a one-of-a-kind boutique in downtown Davenport known for its mix of vintage treasures, handmade goods, and alternative fashion. From the very beginning, Becca and Red envisioned Abernathy’s as more than a store. They wanted it to be an experience, a reflection of the Quad Cities’ creative soul, and a home for people who wanted to express themselves freely. Their journey, however, hasn’t been without challenges. When their original storefront suffered severe flood damage in 2019, they made the difficult

decision to move, but not to give up. Within months, they reopened at their current location on West 3rd Street, welcoming customers back with open arms and even more energy than before. In 2024, Becca and Red proudly celebrated Abernathy’s 10-year anniversary, marking a decade of persistence, passion, and community. The store has become an anchor in downtown Davenport’s cultural scene. Beyond their storefront, they are generous supporters of the Quad Cities’ local art scene and regularly give back to organizations that

Through Abernathy’s, they’ve built not only a successful business, but also a showcase of resilience, and creativity in the heart of downtown Davenport.

AMERICA 250 Celebrating the Past, Present, & Future

A s the United States celebrates America 250 in 2026, the Quad Cities invites visitors to experience America’s story in places where history, innovation, and community come together to honor cultural heritage. Situated along the Mississippi River on the Illinois–Iowa border, the Quad Cities offers a unique view into the past, where the nation’s history isn’t just remembered but built into the landscape. The Mississippi is one of the most significant natural landmarks in our region, shaping commerce, culture, and connection. As the only place the river flows from east to west, the Quad Cities served as a gateway to exploration and settlement. From the Indigenous nations who lived along the Mississippi long before America’s founding, to pioneers and innovators like John Deere, the river has defined generations. Prior to the founding of America, the river served the Meskwaki (Fox) and Sauk nations for generations. Where the Quad Cities stands today was once a thriving home to Native American communities, including the Sauk village of Saukenuk. Today, riverfront trails, parks, and overlooks throughout the Quad Cities’ many

10 VisitQuadCities.com

communities allow visitors to experience the river’s beauty and lasting influence. One of the most significant ties to the history of America’s expansion is found in Rock Island. Fort Armstrong , established in 1816, was one of the first military outposts built after the War of 1812. While the original fort is no longer standing, its legacy lives on through markers and a replica blockhouse that offer a glimpse into the region’s role in America’s defense and settlement. At the heart of the Quad Cities, the Rock Island Arsenal occupies a 946-acre island in the Mississippi River. The Arsenal has supported every major American conflict since the Civil War and remains an active military installation today. Visitors can explore the Rock Island Arsenal Museum, which houses extensive military history and artifacts, as well as Quarters One , the Colonel Davenport House , the Mark VIII Liberty Tank , Memorial Park , and the Rock Island National Cemetery . Each destination along the self- guided tour of the Rock Island Arsenal helps visitors gain insight into the Arsenal’s critical role in national defense and the Quad Cities’ connection to our nation’s story. Across the river, Silvis honors more than 100 young men and women from the community who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam with Hero Street . Originally known as Second Street, this site stands as a testament to patriotism, community, and sacrifice, celebrated not only during America 250, but every day.

The Quad Cities’ role in American history extends beyond military service into agricultural innovation that changed the nation. In the 19th century, John Deere’s steel plow revolutionized farming by making it possible to till through prairie soil, transforming the Midwest. To learn more about the impact of John Deere, not only in the region but across the nation, visitors can stop by the John Deere Pavilion for interactive displays, historic machinery, and an up-close look at how it all formed into what we know today. As the nation celebrates America 250, visitors are invited to explore the Quad Cities’ legacy through historic landmarks, museums, and community stories. In the Quad Cities, America’s story isn’t just told, it’s experienced.

Marlisa Wiley Certified Sommelier Swirl Wine Bar

Wine tasting is much more than popping a bottle open and savoring what’s inside. For Certified Sommelier and Augustana alumna Marlisa Wiley, wine is all about connection, curiosity, and exploration. Marlisa moved to the Quad Cities to attend Augustana College, where she studied business management. During her junior and senior years, she worked in local restaurants, eventually taking on a full-time role and choosing to stay in the area after graduation. In 2020, while working in restaurant management during the pandemic, Marlisa chose to pursue professional wine certifications through the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) and the Court of Master Sommeliers. Over the course of two years, Marlisa completed four exams, studying wine history, vineyard and grape growing, as well as wine

WINE Whether you’re a connoisseur or the drink-from-the- bottle type, the Quad Cities has plenty of wine to taste your way through. Sip and learn about the best pairings at Swirl Wine Bar , where you can find classes and guided tastings that blend education with enjoyment. For a classic winery experience, Old Oaks Winery brings a bit of Napa to the Quad Cities. At Wide River Winery in Clinton, take a tour of their 14-acre vineyard while you sip your way through signature blends. When you’re looking for something a bit more laid back, Grape Life Wine Lounge and Cellar offers good wine, relaxed vibes, and live music to keep the evening going. service. Just before completing her Certified Sommelier exam, Marlisa was connected to two business owners, Troy Gutknecht and Marc VanSeveren, who were planning to open a wine bar in Bettendorf and looking for a partner. That collaboration led to the opening of the Swirl Wine Bar in January 2023. Marlisa has since continued to build strong partnerships with fellow local businesses, creating experiences that feel both welcoming and elevated for visitors. “The Quad Cities has such a great small business heart, and we love being a part of that community,” said Marlisa. Beyond Swirl Wine Bar, Marlisa remains involved with her alma mater by serving on the Augustana Alumni Board from 2019-2025 and hosting wine events at the wine bar or on campus. Swirl Wine Bar also frequently partners with the Jaycees for Wine and Chocolate tasting events, helping raise funds that support community grants and outreach programs. Looking ahead, Marlisa is excited for the continued growth of The Plex and what the coming years will bring.

THE CREATIVE CAPITAL OF THE MIDWEST

QUAD CITIES ARTS AND CULTURE

BY JONATHAN TURNER

O ne of the many reasons that make the Quad Cities an amazing place to live and visit is its staggeringly varied and affordable arts and culture scene. The amount and quality of live music, theater, art, dance, and film is mind-blowing, creating an indelible sense of place and community – plus you won’t break the bank checking out the bountiful offerings. The beloved Quad City Symphony Orchestra is in its 111th season, and under the baton of music director Mark Russell Smith, it regularly features new music alongside classics. Upcoming concerts will have a world premiere by Angel Lam, with the iconic Stravinsky “Rite of Spring,” and a premiere of Rebecca Burkhardt’s Ballet for Cello and Orchestra, with the Beethoven 2nd Symphony. Come back later in the year for “The Lion King” in concert, with the film accompanied by its soundtrack live. The QCSO’s Davenport home, the sumptuous Adler Theatre , is a 1931 former movie palace, and it always hosts a great variety of events. Following comedy legend Jerry Seinfeld in January, other popular comics Daniel Tosh and Kevin James play here. Other events include the Simon and Garfunkel Story, musical “Beetlejuice,” Herman’s Hermits with Peter Noone, Riverdance, Alison Krauss and Union Station, and Wickedest City Burlesque & Variety Fest. Davenport was once known as “the wickedest city in America,” for its plethora of bars and brothels around the turn of the 20th century, and Ballet Quad Cities also pays tribute to that debauched history in April with a new dance program, “The Wickedest City in America” at St. Ambrose

Bass Street Landing

University’s Galvin Fine Arts Center. The exquisite professional ballet company will present “Romeo + Juliet: A Love Story” at Galvin for Valentine’s Day. There’s lots of live music year-round at places large and small. Vibrant Arena at The MARK in Moline is the premier arena (with 11,000 seats), and its 2026 lineup includes the rock band Journey this summer. The beautifully restored 1920 Capitol Theatre in downtown Davenport hosts many concerts, and other venues include The Rust Belt in East Moline, Gypsy Highway , Redstone Room , Raccoon Motel , and The Grape Life in Davenport, and Centennial Hall and Rozz-Tox in Rock Island. Opera Quad Cities will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2026, with a gala concert at Galvin in Davenport. One of the longest-running summer festivals, the Bix Jazz Festival , will celebrate its 55th year, honoring the Davenport native and jazz legend Bix Beiderbecke. The 2026 fest at Rhythm City Casino will highlight Bix’s collaborations with Jean Goldkette, and other sets highlighting works of the 1920s.

CJ Parker Quad Cities Musician

Like a musical octopus, Rock Island’s CJ Parker has his talented tentacles plugged into many sonic outlets in the area, and the results are electrifying. The 25-year-old Davenport Central alum plays keyboards, bass and tuba (among other instruments), is a busy singer-songwriter, director of bands at Bettendorf’s Rivermont Collegiate, vocalist with 10 of Soul, private teacher at QC Rock Academy, and expects to have his new self-produced full-length record out by the middle of 2026. “It’s such a unique job, but I’m loving every second,” Parker says of the private Rivermont, where he has 15 students in the middle and upper school bands. “The staff is cool. They’re super supportive of the program and it’s gonna keep growing.” At 21, after sending an original song, Parker was spotlighted on MTV Music News as a “Rising Star Due for Take Off.” He made his solo performing debut that year playing at RIBCO, and he loves the QC music scene. Favorite gigs have taken him to opening for a packed crowd and Here Come the Mummies at East Moline’s Rust Belt, to several times at Davenport’s Raccoon Motel, and singing the national anthem for the Iowa Hawkeyes’ women’s basketball home games. “I love if it’s just me and a piano and 50 people. I love it and they’re all just sitting intently watching,” Parker says, noting QC musicians support each other, as does the public. “I haven’t moved because I love it so much and people will always ask me like, ‘When are you gonna head out?’ I will say, ‘What’s the point if I’m getting what I’m getting here, like we have what bigger cities have here,” he says. “There’s no reason to, here I have everything I need.” —Jonathan Turner

Alternating Currents Festival

The Alternating Currents Festival will take place in August, featuring over 100 free shows, celebrating original live music, film screenings, art and stand-up comedy. It will be hosted in 40+ venues throughout downtown Davenport, Bettendorf and Rock Island. Several free summer music series happen each year in the QC, including Live@Five on Friday nights in the Common Chord courtyard; the Bass Street Landing Concert Series Thursdays at the plaza on Moline’s 17th Street off River Drive; concerts Thursday nights outside the Bettendorf Public Library ; the East Moline Summer Concert Series is Sunday nights at Runner’s Park ; Lincoln Park in Rock Island hosts a Starlight Revue free concert series on Tuesday nights, and Schwiebert Riverfront Park in Rock Island hosts Thursday Night Groove free concerts from August through October. The QC theater scene alone offers a delicious cornucopia of options, including the professional Circa ’21 Dinner Playhouse , Rock Island, whose new season includes the comic murder mystery “Lucky Stiff,” and musicals “Honky Tonk Angels,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Wizard of Oz,” and “Rock of Ages.”

QUAD CITIZEN TO KNOW

Carrie Stier Owner and Operator // Riverboat Twilight One of the many family businesses that make the QC a great place is Riverboat Twilight, docked since 1987 in LeClaire, and offering cruises from May through October. While her husband, Kevin Stier, pilots the boat, Carrie Stier is the backbone of the operation and takes

care of everything passengers don’t see. In her office east of Galena, Carrie does it all – from booking passengers,

advertising to payroll – and

steers the boat in her own way. The Peoria native has a son, Jacob, who also captains the ship, and daughter, Emily, who works in the office. “I’m surprised how many times on our sightseeing trips we get foreign travelers, it’s amazing,” Carrie says. “I think people

Pickleball and tennis enthusiasts will also feel at home with our region’s high- quality courts, including more than 34 outdoor pickleball courts to keep players occupied. get a deeper appreciation when you see the river from the river, not on shore, in the two-day trip especially, when we go through the Lock & Dams, that is an experience.” Twilight’s most popular cruise is two days, to Dubuque (overnight at Grand Harbor Resort) and back, including all meals and admission to the National Mississippi River Museum. They offer a one-day cruise from Dubuque to Guttenberg, and a sightseeing cruise on the river in the QC. The 140-person capacity riverboat went to Galena until switching to Dubuque in 2005. “When we first departed out of LeClaire, it was little more than a dirt parking lot. LeClaire has really built up,” Carrie says. “There are so many restaurants, shops, the distillery; they’ve put in a lot of effort. And the greater Quad Cities area has a lot to offer as well.” Outside of work, Carrie loves crafting, sewing, making cosplay costumes, and listening to podcasts. She likes getting to know the boat customers, and a handful of regulars have gone on 15 or more cruises. –Jonathan Turner

for optimal play. Players of both sports can enjoy the top-notch facilities the Quad City Tennis Club offers. With indoor and outdoor courts, players can continue to play in the sunshine or snowy weather. When summer comes to an end, winter brings new seasonal adventures. The Mighty Mississippi The second longest river in North America and the fourth longest river in the world, the Mississippi River, is a vital part of our region. This magnificent river separates Iowa and Illinois, molding each state into their unique shape while also bringing both sides closer together. Cultivating an inviting environment, the Mighty Mississippi welcomes travelers to dive deeper into its beauty. With numerous trails, boating, fishing, birdwatching, and scenic views, there’s always a new way to explore this magnificent river. One of the most unique ways to experience the river is from above at the I-74 Pedestrian Bridge Oculus. This centerpiece offers a panoramic view of the Mississippi and the skyline, creating a one-of- a-kind vantage point where Illinois and Iowa meet. Whether you’re walking, biking, or simply stopping to take it all in, the Oculus provides a memorable moment of connection and a modern view of how the river brings the Quad Cities together. With 2,340 miles of the primarily south flowing current, the Quad Cities is a distinctive spot where the current flows east to west. This special flowing current is utilized by nearly 12,000 ships to transport goods, helping the upper Mississippi to generate $250 billion in commerce each year. The waterway has created 750,000 job opportunities in manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism in 60 directly adjacent counties. Residents and travelers also find ways to enjoy the unique current and the river’s beauty. The Channel Cat

Water Taxi is an exhilarating way to travel between states, ferrying across the strong current. The Celebration Belle offers an exciting sightseeing experience with dining for guests. For an overnight river experience, the Riverboat Twilight travels on a sightseeing adventure taking guests up north. For an intimate look along the Mississippi River, Viking River Cruises and American Cruise Lines carry visitors from all over the world to get an in depth view at the river’s beauty. The Mississippi is cherished in its creative celebrations held by the people surrounding it. Floatzilla welcomes kayak and canoe enthusiasts of all levels to join in the largest annual floating event on the Mississippi. Residents in Iowa and Illinois test their strength at Tug Fest , an annual tug-of-war across the river. The Mississippi connects the Quad Cities, bringing people from near and far together to admire its beauty. With creating job opportunities and fun experiences, the Mississippi is more than just a river, it’s a fundamental part of our region. From river boats to walking trails to annual festivities, there are numerous ways to celebrate the Mighty Mississippi.
