a helpless brother, “how dwelleth the love of God in him?” (1 John 3:17). This thought is in perfect harmony with the teaching of the Apostle James: “ If a broth er or sister .be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwith standing ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?” (Jas. 2:15). John, “the beloved,” the apostle of love, emphasizes again and again the importance, necessity, and power of Christian living in such passages as: “Beloved, let us love one another; for love is of God; . . . He that lcveth not, knoweth not God; for God is Jove” (1 John 4:7, 8 ) ; “Let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18), and, “ If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar” (1 John 4:20). But is the Christian’s love to stop with his “ brother” in the family of Christ? Indeed it must not. There are poor, sick, unfortunate, helpless people all around, and it is the business of the church to fulfill Christ’s will concerning them. Christ said: “Blessed are the merciful” (Matt. 5:7), and He had compassion on the hungry mul titude (Matt. 15:32). But let our love be a truly understanding love, a love that sees dll of the need of others, their need for being right with God, as well as the imme diate necessity for food and shelter. Many times the effort to lead an individual to establish his life on a right foundation, the Rock, Christ Jesus, will cost a Christian far more in actual sacrifice than would wel fare work alone. Christian Endeavorers who are faithful to Jesus Christ can ex press their love to Him by visiting hospitals, jails, rescue missions. “We love, because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19, R.V.). Who are your most intimate friends and associates? A member of my church once boasted to me that she did not have many friends in the church. Somehow she seemed to imagine that this fact argued her social superiority. Alas, it was only too true that her affections were upon this world, and her friendship for worldly people. All who are beneficiaries of a blood-bought brother hood have the same Father, and are there fore brethren, and hence should love one another. How can we say we love God whom we have not seen, and yet not love our brother whom we have seen? Of the early Christians, it was often remarked, “Behold, how they love one another.” — J. W . We may talk to them forever, but unless we have this loving sympathy, we might as well be silent. It is possible to pelt people with the gospel,, and to produce the effect of flinging stones at them.
