GET RIDE READY DON PENS A BOOKLET FOR MOTORCYCLISTS I can still remember my first motorcycle, the Triumph 650

filings that need to be made. In addition, you will learn how the various components of the legal process

Bonneville, complete with easy rider handlebars, short pipes, and a lot of noise. (That’s probably what I enjoyed about it the most.) Twenty-five years later, I can’t help but chuckle and smile when I think about all the fun I had on that bike. But like most motorcyclists, I have a close-call story that left me shaken. I was nearly run over by a driver, causing my bike to stand up on its back tire. As my feet hit the ground, I pulled myself back into the bike, which made it look like I knew what I was doing. In reality, I was terrified and naive. Unfortunately, stories like this aren’t uncommon for motorcyclists. Distracted drivers and motorists who forget to look for motorcyclists put riders in danger every day. In fact, my own perceptions on motorcyclists’ rights were shaped by another personal incident. A close friend of my father’s was killed in a motorcycle accident when a driver ran him off the road. Those close to this friend knew this accident was the motorist’s fault, but perceptions and small-town gossip placed the blame on my dad’s friend. To this day, actions like this anger me; innocent victims do not deserve this treatment. That’s why I compiled a guide for motorcyclists called “Ride Ready: Your Motorcycle Guide.” This 40-page booklet features all you need to know about taking accident precautions and what to do when you are injured in a motorcycle accident, even if, legally, some of the fault is on you. Readers will learn about what the process is like for clients who work with the Don Turner Legal Team and what our legal team can accomplish for them. This includes document acquisition, correspondence with the insurance company, and any legal

and insurance companies affect you and your case.

The booklet outlines steps we advise clients to take prior to and after an accident. For example, understanding how much insurance you have and what it covers can help you prepare for the aftermath of an accident. Early in my career, I handled a heartbreaking case in which a client of mine lost his leg in a motorcycle accident. I detail more of his story in my booklet, but ultimately, he was not given the proper compensation that a lost limb and lost salary would require because of the low coverage from the other driver’s insurance and his own. I was incredibly upset, and to this day, it’s a motivating factor in the advocacy I do for motorcyclists and injured clients, especially surrounding insurance education. In my dedication for supporting motorcyclists before, during, and after accidents, I also helped found the National Association of Motorcycle Injury Lawyers. I have spent the majority of my career fighting for victim’s rights and defending those who haven’t been given a fair shake. You deserve fair compensation when careless driving leaves you injured, and I have dedicated much of my work to this idea. I knew there was value in publishing “Ride Ready,” and my decades of experience and the heartbreaking close calls and catastrophic accidents continue to back up this vital information.

ODIN LIVES UP TO HIS LEGENDARY NAME THE GUARDIAN WHO WOULD NOT LEAVE HIS WATCH

Amid the devastation of the wildfires that tore through California in the fall

The family made it to safety with Tessa in tow, relieved to be together but heartbroken that Odin and the goats weren’t with them. After several agonizing days, it was finally safe enough for them to return home and survey the destruction. What did the Hendels find? Ashes, rubble, their barn and home burned to the ground — and Odin. There he was, still guarding his eight goats and some small deer that had sought shelter with the brave canine. Weakened, burned, and limping, but nevertheless steadfast, Odin had never left his goats, even as the fire raged around them. Odin wagged his tail as he saw his family, happy to see they were also safe. The Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue and the Goatlandia Animal Sanctuary provided temporary shelter for the goats and pups while the Hendels rebuilt their barn. Odin received all the care he needed, along with a lot of love and treats. Today, Odin and his goats are back with their family, rebuilding their lives after this devastating wildfire. But the Hendels, and anyone who’s heard the story, won’t soon forget the bravery of Odin, the amazing pup.

of 2017, a few heroic tales rose up to give people

hope. One such tale was of Odin, a loyal Great Pyrenees guard dog. Along with his sister, Tessa, and eight rescue goats, Odin is part of the Hendel family.

It was mid-October when the Hendels were awoken by the smell of smoke, a fierce orange sky, and sounds of destruction — urgent warnings from Mother Nature. Gathering everyone as quickly as they could, the Hendels got their human family members and Tessa in the car, but Odin, seated proudly next to the eight goats, refused to get in. Try as they might, the Hendels could not get him to come with them, and there wasn’t enough room in the car for the eight goats. With the firestorm quickly approaching and the risk of losing even more family members increasing with each passing minute, the Hendels made the heart-wrenching decision to leave Odin and the goats behind.

BECOME A BBQ MASTER

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE THIS GRILLING SEASON

Nothing says summer quite like a barbecue, and July is the peak month for grilling! But before you fire up the charcoal and start inviting the whole neighborhood over, review these grill safety tips. Keep it clean. The urge to leave your mess until later is always strong when you have filled yourself with scrumptious grilled treats, but keeping your grill clean is necessary for both safety and taste. After your meal, wipe up any grease or gunk left by your food while the bars of the grill are still warm. After the grill has completely cooled, remove the bars and scrub the additional parts. Every few weeks, deep-clean the grill to ensure that caked-on food and oils don’t damage it or seep into your food. After all, no one wants to taste last week’s burgers on their salmon. Give it space, but not too much. Using your grill is a delicate dance of using your space correctly. Keep your grill outside of your home and at least 10 feet away from your home or other structures, such as deck railings. Monitor how much food is placed on the grill too. You need to

give your food ample space so the grease and drippings can fall at a safe rate.

Lastly, don’t ever leave a grill unattended, even if you are only heating the bars for cleaning. Keep your eye on the grill at all times and watch your surroundings. Be prepared. Accidents happen to grill masters and novices alike, but when you’re prepared for possible flare-ups and fires, you can mitigate the disaster from causing extra damage. Have a fire extinguisher ready in the event of a fire, and keep a blanket or towel handy for grease fires. Always turn off the knobs on the grill before you start eating, and check your propane tank before turning the grill on. Your tank should be rust-free and in good condition to limit any possible leaks or malfunctions. If you believe you are the victim of negligence after a barbecue this summer, Don Turner Legal Team can help. Call 770-594-1777 for a free consultation or visit DonTurnerLegalTeam.com.

Ashley Sampson says she “fell” into her position at Don Turner Legal Team more than four years ago when she heard about the job from Don Turner’s former law partner. His previous law partner was a good friend of Ashley’s, which meant they understood just how dedicated Ashley would be. Four years later, Ashley says she has surprised herself with how devoted she is to legal work. “I didn’t know anything about the legal field when I started working here,” Ashley recalls. “I was trained, and as I learned, I fell in love with the profession.” Serving as the Firm Administrator, Ashley primarily works with our personal injury cases and supports the criminal cases our team takes on. She manages our scheduling and bookkeeping, ensuring that our daily operations are properly handled. It’s obvious that we would be lost without Ashley, and this past winter tested our ability to function without her support. On Feb. 22, Ashley and her husband, Nate, welcomed their first daughter, Emma. The couple has been married for four years this past May, and they are enjoying their new life as parents and watching Emma grow. When Ashley and Nate aren’t working, caring for Emma, or cheering her on through big milestones, the couple is working Meet Our Dedicated Firm Administrator THE RIGHT FIT

on the beginning phases of Nate’s home inspection business. The duo is very close to and has the support of their families, who are also based in Georgia. While tackling the demands parenthood requires, Ashley says she has been grateful for Don Turner’s support. “I enjoy working for Don. He cares a lot about my family, and I feel that my co- workers are an extension of my family. I haven’t found that in previous bosses ... I can tell he truly cares.” At Don Turner Legal Team, we could not function as seamlessly without the dedication of Ashley! We’re so glad she “fell” into place on our team.

On the Trail of the Madden Curse

TRUTH, LIES, AND SUPERSTITION

There is no urban legend in the world of modern video games as well-documented as the so-called “Madden Curse.” The curse revolves around the highly sought-after cover spot of the popular NFL video game “Madden NFL,” formerly known as “John Madden Football.” While the games date back to 1988, the curse is said to originate with the 1999 version. Garrison Hearst, a popular running back at the time, broke his ankle shortly after being featured on the cover of the 1999 edition. This was the first in a long line of injuries and personal issues that resulted in the rumor gaining traction. Soon, the idea that the game’s seemingly innocent cover could have devastating effects on a player’s career was widespread. Once a substantial honor in the world of football, the Madden cover spot has become one of the sport’s most feared superstitions for fans. The players, however, seem to find the correlation more amusing than scary. Most of the athletes in contention for the spot still consider it to be a great honor, choosing to brush off the rumors as coincidence. Despite the ambivalence of many players, there does seem to be a correlation between the cover and player issues. Of the 22 players who have been featured on the cover, 16 of them have suffered from significant issues in the season that followed. While the causes varied, with severe injuries,

contract disputes, and personal issues all afflicting different players, something about the spotlight appears to have disturbed the powers that be. In fact, sometimes these issues occur shortly after the game is released in stores. Whatever the true cause, the curse seems to have taken a dip in recent years. Only one of the last five players has been affected, a stat that bodes well for this year’s star: Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The real answer probably lies somewhere between fact and fiction. The increased pressure of national attention is bound to make players tense up every once in a while, and in a game as physical as football, any distraction can end in disaster.
