Sport Ireland is the authority tasked with the development of sport in the country, and its National Indoor Arena includes training centres for athletics, gymnastics and multi-sports facilities. The original arena was lit in 2017 using Thorn Lighting’s 2kW metal halide Altis floodlights. Sport Ireland approached Thorn and their sister brand Zumtobel, both lighting brands of the Zumtobel Group, in search of an optimal 1-2-1 upgrade to LED and controls. Ronan Meally Consulting Engineers and electrical contractor Tec Facilities Management worked with the Zumtobel Group to overcome the challenges of a tight turnaround and the constraints of a live building to install Thorn’s Altis LED floodlights, Zumtobel’s CRAFT II Plus luminaires and LITECOM controls. The new scheme presented cost savings of 38% in energy compared to the original one. In addition to that, the Altis LED floodlights provide flicker-free operation, a considerable benefit to a National Sports Facility when it comes to filming in HDTV. Domestic electricians who need to formally recognise their skills and experience now have a dedicated Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) route available. The EWA is based on the same content as the Domestic Electrician apprenticeship standard, so both new entrants and existing workers are assessed and accredited to the same industry standard. To be eligible, candidates need to be currently working as a domestic electrician with over three years’ experience and hold at least a Level 2 electrical technical qualification. The Domestic Electrician Experienced Worker Qualification comprises five practical performance units, plus the BS 7671:2018 and full Inspection & Testing qualification. After the qualification is gained, learners must undertake the AM2ED assessment. Ruth Devine, TESP Chair, commented: “We’d like to thank the whole industry working group for the development of this new EWA. It’s an important step in recognising the work of domestic electricians and providing a robust route for competence.” To find out more, visit www.electrical-ewa.org.uk New Domestic Electrician Experienced Worker Assessment now available

ETT offers FREE apprentice aptitude test service for NI electrical contractors

The Electrical Training Trust (ETT) has developed an industry- specific aptitude assessment, to help employers with their 2023 apprentice recruitment. The test will take place on two dates: Tuesday, 15 August and Tuesday, 29 August, from 10.30am to 11.30am at ETT in Ballymena. ETT’s aptitude test aims to provide measurable, objective data that should give a better all-round view of a potential apprentice’s suitability while reducing the work for the employer. The

aptitude tests are made up of three separate tests covering Maths, English and Science and should help to provide a better, more realistic and current view of possible candidate’s skills and abilities than relying solely on formal certificates of education. The results will be shared with the employer and candidate via email in the form of an apprentice profile. Bookings can only be made by potential employers by calling +44 (0)28 2565 0750.

To help tackle the growing issue of fake industry credentials and paid-for qualifications, charity National Electrotechnical Training (NET) has launched a new online service that allows users to check the validity of an AM2 certificate in the UK. Users are asked to enter the certificate’s issue number and the holder’s National Insurance number on the NET website. The results then show if NET holds a certificate that matches those details, or if further investigation is needed. “It’s very hard to stop fraudulent adverts but the industry is working hard to address this – awarding organisations such as City & Guilds and EAL have certificate checkers, ECS cards can be checked via the ECS Check service and now with AM2, our online service allows people to check AM2 validity directly,” said Carolyn Mason, NET chief executive. REGULATIONS

THE DOCUMENT IS PART OF THE EUROPEAN GREEN DEAL AND IS EXPECTED TO ENTER INTO FORCE AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS SUMMER… WEEE Ireland welcomes EUCOBAT’s statement on the new EU Battery Regulations

W EEE Ireland (Waste, Electrical and electrical and electronic appliances to help them comply with the legal obligations imposed by the EU Battery Directive 2006/66/EC and WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU. WEEE Ireland manages the collection of household e-waste, lighting and batteries from authorised collection points for recycling, on behalf of its over 1,300 producer members. The non-profit organisation is a member of EUCOBAT, the European association that ensures the collection and recycling of waste batteries in the EU. “WEEE Ireland is delighted to see the new EU battery regulations published. We look forward to continuing our support of their implementation for proper environmental management of Electronic Equipment) is a not-for-profit organisation, founded by producers of batteries, alongside our fellow Eucobat Members,” commented Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland. The new EU battery regulation is part of The European Green Deal and establishes a comprehensive legal framework for all types of batteries across their entire lifecycle within the European Union. It focuses on creating a circular economy for battery minerals in Europe and improves the safety and performance of batteries. The final document was published last January and is expected to enter into force at the beginning of this summer, with transition periods between 12 and 36 months for most requirements. EUCOBAT has released a statement to welcome and comment on the most significant changes established by the new regulations: Enabling sustainable development The Regulations contribute to the objectives of the EU Green Deal with its focus on circularity and the whole battery lifecycle. New categories adapted to the market The Regulation has now introduced new categories, such as batteries used in Light Means of Transport (LMT) and for Electric Vehicles (EV). They will ensure clarity and facilitate appropriate waste management processes. Economic operator responsibilities The retained definition of producers in the Regulation brings clarity to the responsibilities of economic operators within the industry.

Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland.

Enhanced information and clarity The introduction of labelling and information requirements, including carbon footprint declarations, labels for EV batteries, LMT batteries, rechargeable industrial batteries with a capacity exceeding 2kWh, as well as an electronic battery passport and QR code, will provide easy access to information to make better-informed choices. Full statement available at www.eucobat.eu

Ambitious collection goals The establishment of ambitious collection targets for waste portable batteries and LMT batteries is crucial for achieving raw material circularity and reducing European dependencies on third countries. Adaptive market measures The Regulation takes market developments and technological advancements, such as longer lifespans of LMT and portable

batteries, into account, by empowering the European

Commission (EC) to amend the methodology to calculate the collection rate of waste batteries based on the volumes available for collection.

Peace of mind for contractors SUPPLIED BY CORE DISTRIBUTION, THE FAST TRAK FIRE-RATED SUSPENSION SYSTEMS MEET RELEVANT FIRE SAFETY REGULATIONS AND OFFER ASSURANCES AND TRACEABILITY…

C ore Distribution is Ireland’s supplier of the Gripple Fast Trak™ suspension system, whose demand continues to grow amongst contractors seeking fire-rated systems. Fast Trak is a prefabricated trapeze bracket, which enables efficient, flexible and safe installation of electrical containment, ductwork, pipework and other mechanical services. With fire safety in buildings becoming increasingly important, contractors can rest assured, as independent test data from Warringtonfire confirms the entire system meets the fire performance

requirements associated with BS EN 1363-1:2020. Dan Fisher, Managing Director at Core Distribution, explained, “Fire safety is extremely important in modern building design, which means contractors are seeking fire-rated suspension systems. With Fast Trak, you have the peace of mind that the system chosen meets relevant fire safety regulations and offers assurances and traceability.” Cable management and fire safety It has been proven that in the event of a

fire, the integrity of cable management systems is an essential part of building safety, so careful consideration needs to be taken to suspending building services. It is therefore logical to require that the whole cable management system should undergo an independent fire test, not just its individual components, to ensure that the system works together to meet all relevant fire-rating requirements. The result is greater reassurance in the event of a fire that no personnel entering a building would face the threat of falling or fallen cables, therefore reducing risk to life. Overfilling cable trays could create a potential fire risk. Contractors are therefore advised to check and comply with manufacturers’ instructions on loadings. Reduced installation times Contractors are increasingly turning towards pre-assembled systems like Fast Trak; they are quicker and simpler to install and require no cutting or hot works on site – which could present a potential health and safety hazard and necessitate fire watchers. Gripple suspension systems are delivered by Core Distribution to the site in kit form,

either in pre-cut lengths of wire rope and a fused end fixing to suit the substrate or as a track-based system compatible with prefabricated brackets, making them much easier to install. Assembly is also significantly easier, as the prefabricated brackets can be installed in four orientations, with fixing points on every face. The cartridge at the end of each Fast Trak bracket allows contractors to attach and adjust the height of the bracket in 10mm increments easily and tool-free. M4 level markers on the tracks highlight every 50mm increments, so levelling can be done ‘by eye’ – and there are no nuts to adjust either. Easy install in Ballyshannon Recently, Core Distribution supplied Fast Trak to electrical contractors O’Hara & Harrison, based in County Donegal, for a new hospital in Ballyshannon, Ireland. The project involved a new 80-bed unit, to accommodate patients of both Sheil Hospital and Rock Nursing unit. The revolutionary trapeze bracket system was used to suspend electrical containment. This was the first time that O’Hara & Harrison had used Fast Trak, and the contractor’s installation team

described it as ‘quicker, stronger and easier to handle’. O’Hara & Harrison saw immediate benefits from installing the bracket in any orientation and the fact that Fast Trak could be used on different surfaces, including plasterboard and substrates. They also welcomed the major time and labour savings and easy handling of the product on site. Fast Trak also helps achieve CO 2 savings and work towards zero carbon, as it uses less steel than traditional methods and requires less transportation around the site. Peace of mind for cable management Core Distribution is an award-winning supplier and well-renowned across Ireland for distributing market- leading, high-quality products through their extensive network of electrical wholesalers to contractors. Dealing with specifiers and contractors to create demand, Core prides themselves on offering the best service possible. A large stock holding of close to €2M across their two bases means you can rely on Core Distribution to ensure quick delivery to every project across Ireland.

Core Distribution at ELECTEX and PLUMBEX To learn more about this and other wire suspension solutions from Gripple, visit the Core Distribution stand at ELECTEX Dublin on 6 and 7 September. The Core team will be demonstrating the benefits of the Fast Trak range, and apprentices and installers will be able to take part in challenges, with prizes awarded for the fastest Fast Trak installation! The Core Distribution stand will be strategically positioned between the ELECTEX and PLUMBEX sections of the tradeshow, as both sectors avail of the Fast Trak solutions.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY FIRST LAUNCHES NEW REPORT ‘FUTURE HOMES IN NORTHERN IRELAND’ AND CONSIDERS THE FUNDAMENTAL CHANGES WE MUST MAKE ON THE

A report released in June, ‘Future Homes in Northern Ireland’ by campaigning charity, Electrical Safety First, considers how the move to net zero will bring fundamental changes to our homes and energy use, and offers pragmatic expert recommendations to address the risk this entails. To reach net zero by 2050, Northern Ireland must prioritise electrifying its carbon-intensive sectors, specifically heating and transport. This requires a range of new technologies, creating a web of interconnected challenges and hazards, aggravated by having some of the oldest housing stock in Europe. However, in our increasingly electric world, electrical safety is still not given the attention it deserves. In the Future Homes report, the charity uncovers the key risks that accompany our ever-expanding use of electricity and emerging home technologies. It presents the potential dangers faced by individuals and families, highlighting the critical importance of a smooth and safe transition to net zero. At the launch of the report, hosted by Louise Cullen, from BBC NI, stakeholders from government, industry and community organisations heard how it takes an integrated approach to electrical safety. The topics ranged from growing the skills required to create the future home and the range of low- JOURNEY TO NET ZERO… The future is now

carbon options available to consumers, to the demand for an effective electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The vital importance of consumer safety is highlighted throughout the report, including the need to use competent and skilled electricians and the risks of DIY retrofitting. A particular focus of the report discusses how prepared Northern Ireland’s housing stock is for our low-carbon transition and how insufficient data hampers our understanding of this important issue. Over 60% of Northern Ireland’s homes are older properties with outdated electrical installations, posing safety risks. Lesley Rudd, Chief Executive of Electrical

Safety First, commented, “Because electricity is such an integral part of our lives, it can be easy to forget its inherent dangers, but electrical safety can be a life-or-death issue. “We produced this report because key strategic documents, such as the draft Housing Supply Strategy, often overlook electrical safety. Yet today, electricity causes almost 60% of domestic fires in Northern Ireland, and the future home will see an ever-increasing reliance on it as an energy source. “Our report presents an integrated, joined-up, approach to electrical safety, offering recommendations that are essential to safeguarding lives while paving the way to a sustainable, low- carbon future. We look forward to working with the next Assembly and Executive to deliver on these vital recommendations, throughout our critical journey to net zero.” The full report is available at https:// www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk/ media/3z3nfhlo/future-homes-in- northern-ireland.pdf For more information, please contact Karter Kane, Policy and Public Affairs Advisor. Shining stars at the NI Electrical Awards 2023

W e were proud to host a star-studded night at Northern Ireland’s Electrical Awards 2023. The glittering ceremony took place on 2 June at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Shaws Bridge, Belfast, and celebrated the incredible achievements of the individuals and companies who work proactively to be at the top of their game in the NI electrical industry. Our judging panel did not have an easy task selecting winners for all 17 categories, so all finalists should feel extremely proud of their hard work. The generous proceedings of the night were donated to the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) and will have a great impact on offering support services to people in need in the electrical and energy sector. Our huge congratulations to all the finalists, highly commended entries and winners!

Future-proofing is becoming a very widespread concept in the industry, and Aico’s HomeLINK Connected Home Solution is the perfect tool for being proactive towards environmental risks. The platform uses unobtrusive and secure environmental sensors to monitor temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and air quality. These main factors that could threaten the property’s longevity and accelerate the need for renovation in the not-so-distant future. The pre- and post-retrofit monitoring performed by HomeLINK enables users to evaluate energy efficiency and ensure their investments provide more comfortable and efficient homes. Our panel was impressed by the powerful insights provided by HomeLINK and its ability to promote a safer, healthier and more sustainable home. The judges classified it as a must-have, not only for private customers but also for social housing projects, as the data generated by the platform could potentially make on-site inspections redundant and save the government thousands of pounds. For residents, the monitor is controlled via the HomeLINK App, which offers complete transparency into the status of connected fire and carbon monoxide alarms and important health and well-being information. They are provided not only with information such as home rating, temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide data, but also with useful advice on how to improve the quality of their home’s environment.

This little but mighty retail luminaire from ZUMTOBEL proves that great performance can also be presented in the smallest packages. Introduced as “the future of store lighting”, SCENO uses miniature lighting chambers to provide superior light quality and effective glare control with a high level of visual comfort. SCENO’s individually swivelling wings and 355° rotation allow retailers to direct and customise the lighting to keep it consistent with the brand’s style during customers’ shopping experience. The luminaire’s flair for customisation was one of the winning points for the judges. The panel complimented the great focus of SCENO’s LEDs and its versatility for lighting designs in retail in general, as it is not necessary to change the whole installation to get a totally different feel in the shop. They classified it as a real future-proof product. The luminaire’s powerful LEDs reduce the number of lights required, helping retailers save on their energy bills and freeing up space for additional elements on the tracks, such as motion sensors or beacon technology. The luminaire also comes in a pretty, yet discreet package, with four designs, three housing colours and four different temperatures to let the products shine. SCENO is easy to install and can be mounted on three-phase trunking or Zumtobel’s TECTON trunking system. Thanks to their efficiency, the luminaires may also be placed further apart, reducing installation time and cost.

L-R: Anthony Brown, Lightsource, receives award from sponsor Kieran King, Kempston Controls. WINNER: Lighting Project of the Year LIGHTSOURCE - STROKESTOWN NATIONAL IRISH FAMINE MUSEUM

CDE NI Ltd provided the installation of sub-mains, power, lighting and fire detection and supplied ICT cabling plus test and commissioning to these short-term rental apartments. The client wished to control all non-essential systems within the apartments without visiting the building, and CDE NI went above and beyond to fulfil the brief. The judges were not only impressed by the quality of this installation due to its Belfast city centre location, but also because of all the positive feedback from CDE’s client. The panel stated it is simply refreshing to see a contractor listening and reacting to the customer, with superb results to show for it. L-R: Sponsor Declan Greene, Rointe (centre), presents award to Chris and Colin Downey from CDE NI Ltd. Lightsource provided a bespoke lighting design for the new National Famine Museum located at the Strokestown Park House & Gardens, in County Roscommon. They developed a lighting scheme that would work with the interior exhibition gallery of the Famine Museum as it was redeveloped into a thematic journey. The judging panel was impressed by how the lighting really made the exhibition come to life. In their words, the lighting design in a museum is just as important as the artefacts, and Lightsource did an outstanding job with the quality of the displays and the professionalism they applied to the project.

On behalf of sponsor Timeguard, Karen McAvoy, Ireland’s Electrical Magazine (centre), presents award to Eddie Haughey and Jimmy Haughey, Haughey Electrical. WINNER: Small Commercial Project of the Year HAUGHEY ELECTRICAL LIMITED - ENNISKILLEN WORKHOUSE

After the unfortunate fire at the Bullitt Hotel in March 2022, AG Electrical was tasked with the complete electrical restoration works. The installation included lighting, power, life safety systems, communication systems, audio and TV in the 74 bedrooms, reception areas, main restaurant, bars, kitchens, stairwells and rooftop restaurant. The project also included external areas. The panel felt AG Electrical performed brilliantly, especially in the tough conditions after the fire and the tight timeframe for completion. The installation also displayed a full range of disciplines on the electrical side, which were beautifully presented in the entry for the NIEA. Sponsor Perla Correia, Ecovolt (centre), presents award to Adam Gilmore and Adam Dougherty, AG Electrical. Haughey Electrical provided the full electrical installation as part of the restoration of the Enniskillen Workhouse, which opened in 1845 to house up to 1,000 people in financial distress. Heritage projects always present a challenge regarding permission to make changes, but the company showed great creativity and imagination. Haughey Electrical implemented a strategic vision of conservation and refurbishment, allowing the project to reveal the historical significance of the site while bringing the building into the present. Our judges considered the Workhouse a very interesting endeavour for all trades involved, and a tremendous flagship project that will be enjoyed for years to come.
