Ganson UK was awarded the Social/Community Construction Award- below £1m, sponsored by Environmental Street Furniture, for their work on the Greenhill YMCA Community Hub in Newcastle. The new community hub which is nestled in the foothills of Slieve Donard, provides large flexible communal spaces, a multi-function room, a breakout area, water safety training pool with hydrotherapy function, as well as showers, toilets, changing facilities and a café. This year’s judging panel said Ganson UK had delivered an excellent quality building that was well designed, bright and spacious, adding that it will make a highly positive impact for children in the local community. Farrans Construction was a worthy winner in this category sponsored by Mills Selig for their complex South Lake Leisure Centre project which the judges agreed demonstrated a very high standard of workmanship and finish. The new £36m state-of-the-art ‘Super Centre’ includes a 50m pool; vitality suite with steam room, sauna, and treatment rooms; the largest gym in Ireland (1,000m2) and an 8-court sports hall. The early engagement of the contractor and their close collaboration with the design team, subcontractors and client also impressed the judges and led to completion two weeks ahead of schedule and within 0.5% of the original client budget.
