Do you experience pain in the buttock, leg, or even your foot? If so, you may be experiencing sciatica. Sciatica is a common form of back and leg pain that is often misunderstood by sufferers. People frequently have questions about what sciatica is, why it occurs and how to find relief from the intense pain it can cause from the low back down to the feet. If you are suffering from sciatica, it is important to find its root cause. Many people often think an x-ray or expensive MRI is first needed to figure out what is causing pain. Having a lot of tests doesn’t mean you will find its root cause. Recent studies show that nearly 1 million of MRIs done for sciatica fail to find a treatable cause. With a new imaging technique called magnetic resonance neurography, 69% of the patients were found to have a trapped sciatic nerve deep in the buttock by a muscle

called the piriformis. It is known that in about 25% of the general population, the sciatic nerve pierces through the piriformis muscle and can be susceptible to abnormal pressure and irritation. Why Does Sciatica Occur? If therearechanges inposture, musclestrengthorpelvic alignment, the nerve can be compressed which leads to the quite common low back and sciatic nerve pains. The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in your body. Iteven reachesdown to the footand therefore, can be irritated anywhere along its path. With sciatica, the consequent ache can be felt anywhere from the base of the spine, the buttocks or the back of the thigh and legs. Even tingling sensations in the toes can be attributed at times to the impingement of the sciatic nerve.

“HOW SHOULD I TAKE CARE OFMY BACK?”

1. Keep a Good Posture When you are standing, imagine a string through the top of your head lifting you straight up. This puts your neck, shoulders, spine and hips in natural alignment. With sitting, make sure you sit back in the chair with your feet on the floor and your lower back supported. Your shoulders should not slouch when sitting. Avoid soft couches when you can. 2. Lift Properly Picking things up is a normal part of our day. Even if you pick up something light, your back muscles have to lift the weight of your upper torso and control that movement. Make sure youalways facewhatyouneed topickup, squat keeping your spine straight and push with your leg muscles. This helps reduce the excessive pressure on your spine.

3. Stay Flexible Flexibility is key to maintaining a healthy back. Bykeepingyourbodyflexible, thenormal forces of movement and lifting can be distributed across the spine, rather than focused onto a few segments, which can then fail. An easy stretching routine everyday can keep you feeling great and put a spring in your step. 4. Stay Strong You have hundreds of muscles, which control the movement of your spine. Major muscles that support the spine are called your core muscles and include your abdominal, pelvis, spinal and hip muscles. By keeping your core muscles strong, you support your spine and have the ability to easily control lifting, quick movements, bending and a lot more.

5. Physical Therapy Our physical therapists are medical experts in evaluating spine and body movement. By having a regular check up, you can make sure your body is in good condition to tackle the activities you love. With soothing hands-on therapy and targeted easy exercises we can help you return quickly to feeling your best. Therefore, our physical therapists commit their undivided attention and expertise to just YOU.This nurturing environment helps you get the most out of each appointment for faster results and more long lasting changes. Furthermore, we take a multidisciplinary approach to treating each unique person. Our physical therapists will communicate regularly with your other healthcare providers (chiropractor, massage therapist, fitness trainer, etc.) to ensure a smooth transition back to an active, pain-free lifestyle. Redcord Redcord suspension is a unique neuromuscular approach to treatment, rehabilitation and performance. The routine consists of tailored exercises performed in a series of ropes and slings. Each exercise challenges your neuromuscular system to help you re-establish quality and control of your movements. There are bungee cords to assist and guide you through the routine. Your provider might also shake the ropes to add even more neuromuscular challenge to an exercise. Finding the right balance of

“control vs. instability” during an exercise is key to the success of this treatment method. When done correctly, your provider can help you regain muscle stability, build core strength, and restore pain-free joint mobility faster than conventional treatment methods.
