in each of our management and leasing offices,” said Ken- neth Haskins , vice president - commercial management for HGMC who is leading the sustainability initiatives cam- paign for the company’s resi- dential and commercial prop- erties. “It will remind us that we must wisely use, conserve, and responsibly manage our energy, water and solid waste resources as part of our daily business practices.” Haskins stated that while the formal Sustainability Statement was newly written, it reflected practices HGMC has employed for years and contains new initiatives to conserve energy, reduce water consumption and responsibly handle solid waste throughout the company’s portfolio. “For the past several years, it has been a priority to drive down our consumption of electricity, natural gas, and water. Since 2002, when we earned our First Energy Star designated office building, we have worked to achieve the same standard in all of our office buildings.” HGMC became an Ener- gy Star Partner with the Environmental Protection Agency in 2005. By 2012,
when the company’s aver- age portfolio-wide Energy Star score reached 85, the EPA recognized HGMC as a “Top Performer” (today, the national average stands at 50). The following year, 10 of HGMC’s buildings received the BOMA 360 Performance Award (Building Owners and Managers Association) for superior practices in several management categories in- cluding energy savings and sustainability. In March of this year, one of HGMC’s signature proper- ties – One South Wacker in Chicago – was awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold for Existing Buildings certifica- tion by the United States Green Building Council. Nearly all of HGMC’s office buildings have an aggressive recycling program in place where materials sorting is done by the local recycling service company, greatly reducing the quantity of refuse making it to local landfills. HGMC also contracts with janitorial service providers committed to using “green cleaning” practices, such as the use of HEPA filters in all vacuums and environmentally friendly cleaning products. n
