JULY/AUGUST 2019

LENDING A HAND Our Second Service Trip to Guatemala

How is your summer? My family and I are enjoying the sunny weather and being outside! This time of year, there’s not much that makes me happier than getting outside to fish, camp, and enjoy nature. Later in the summer, we’re going to the Bear Lake area for a family reunion. That’s where my father grew up, and his family lived there for many years, so it has special meaning to us. We’re getting together with my parents, brothers, sisters, and their families for a camping weekend, and I’m looking forward to spending some time in a beautiful place with people I love. We try to get together at least once a year, but it’s amazing how quickly time passes between visits. In March, I took my second service trip to Guatemala to provide dental care to the communities there. This year, my wife, Jen, and my two youngest sons joined me, and just as I did on my first trip, they fell in love with the beautiful country, the warm people, and the immeasurable gratification that comes from helping others. They also found a renewed appreciation for many of the luxuries we have at home, including access to dental and health care. Many of the people we served on the trip don’t have the same things we do, and it’s eye-opening (and a good reminder) to realize we’re very fortunate to have what we have. This year, I was able to work with both my boys as I saw patients, and I noticed the joy they found in helping others. We had a really wonderful time, and I hope to make this trip a tradition. For my kids, I hope their time in Guatemala will serve as something of a guidepost for their future paths. My 17-year-old just graduated from high school and is headed to college this fall. It’s an exciting time in his life when he also has to make some decisions about his future. I know he’s going to do well and will be successful in whatever direction he decides to go.

Other than Bear Lake, I think we’ll probably stick pretty close to home for the rest of the summer, enjoying the Treasure Valley and getting outside for trail rides, runs, and hiking. Speaking of getting outside, our patient appreciation party is almost here! I hope you already RSVP’d because this event’s attendance is now at maximum capacity. I think it’s going to be a fun time and a way we can say thank you for being a part of Ustick Dental Office. As gratifying as it is to go to another country and meet a dental need there, it also makes me grateful for the patients I get to see every day here at Ustick Dental.

Have a great rest of your summer, and I’ll see you at the zoo!
