A Message from Supervisor Dennis Rodoni A Family Challenge to Get Ready for Winter As another school year begins, now is the perfect time to prepare for the winter months ahead. While no one knows exactly what this winter will bring, we know Northern Califor- nia can experience strong storms, flooding, landslides, extended power outages, and Public Safety Power Shutoffs. Forecasters expect El Niño conditions to develop this winter. While El Niño does not guarantee a wetter season here, it can increase the likelihood of stronger winter storms. One of the things I appreciate most about the San Geronimo Valley is how neigh- bors always look out for one another. We clear fallen trees together, check on neigh- bors after storms, and lend a hand whenever it’s needed. Preparing for winter is another way we can continue that tradition. Rather than thinking about emergency preparedness as another item on your to do list, why not make it a family activity? Put on your favorite playlist, make some cook- ies or hot chocolate, and spend an hour getting ready together. You may even start a new family tradition. Your Winter Ready Checklist This Week... Make It Fun!

Summer Outbreak: Safe Food Prep Steps to Prevent Cyclospora Marin County Public Health protects our commu- nity by promoting health, preventing disease, and preparing for public health emergencies. A multistate outbreak of Cyclospora has sickened thousands of people across more than 30 states this summer. Federal and state investigators have identified iceberg lettuce as the likely source of many illnesses. While California cases remain stable, tracking Cyclospora over time has become more challenging. The CDC recently removed Cyclospora from FoodNet, its long-standing national foodborne disease surveillance program. Although local and state public health agencies continue to investigate cases and respond to outbreaks, this change limits our ability to track long-term trends nationwide. In Marin County, Public Health nurses continue to investigate every reported case to identify exposures and help prevent additional illness. To protect yourself: • Wash your hands before handling fresh produce.

Go on an Emergency Kit Scavenger Hunt! Adults handle medications while kids become Supply Detectives, finding safe supplies and adding one comfort item like a favorite book, stuffed animal, or card game. Help a grandparent, friend, or neighbor sign up too. See who in your family can help the most people get connected!

• Build (or refresh) your emergency kit. Include enough water, packaged food, blankets, first aid supplies, medications, pet supplies, flashlights, batteries, and phone chargers for at least three days. • Sign up for AlertMarin. Make sure everyone in your household receives emergency alerts by phone, text, or email. • Create a family communication plan. Choose an out of area emergency contact and write down important phone numbers. • Know your evacuation plan. Identify two ways out of your neighborhood and choose a family meeting place. • Prepare your home. Clean gutters, clear storm drains, trim vegetation, and secure outdoor furniture before the rainy season begins. • Organize important documents. Keep identifi- cation, insurance papers, emergency contacts, medication lists, and other important docu- ments together in a waterproof folder. • Charge and back up. Charge phones, portable battery packs, flashlights, weather radios, and other rechargeable devices before storms arrive. • Know your neighborhood. Identify neighbors who may need extra help during a storm, choose a neighborhood meeting place, and learn the safest routes in and out of your neigh- borhood. • Learn about local resources. Visit emergency. marincounty.gov to learn about shelters, road closures, sandbag locations, and emergency updates. • Share the San Geronimo Valley spirit. Check on an older neighbor, someone living alone, or a family that may need extra help before winter arrives.

• Rinse fruits and vegetables under clean, running water.

Let the kids decorate emergency contact cards for backpacks, wallets, or the refrigerator.

• Scrub firm produce with a clean produce brush.

Practice while driving to school, soccer practice, or the grocery store. Ask your kids, “Which way would we go if this road were closed?” Make it a family yard cleanup day. Put on your favor- ite playlist, divide into teams, and create your own “Winter Ready” family anthem when you’re finished. It might become a new family tradition! Invite grandparents or older family members to share stories about memorable winter storms while you organize. Hold a Family Power Check! Turn off the lights and see whose flashlight shines the brightest. Bonus points if everyone knows where the extra batteries are stored. Draw a simple neighborhood map together. Mark your home, meeting place, neighbors who may need assistance, and safe routes.

• Remove and discard the outer leaves of lettuce and other leafy greens.

• Prepare and store foods safely.

• These simple steps can help reduce your risk of foodborne illness.

Have everyone learn one preparedness tip and share it during dinner. The best tip wins double dessert!

Deliver homemade cookies, a handwritten note, or simply stop by to say hello. Small acts of kindness help make our Valley stronger.

What if every household in the San Geronimo Valley completed this checklist? I believe West Marin could become the best prepared community in Marin County, and we’d do it the way this Valley always has: together! On behalf of my office, I hope you had a wonderful summer, and I wish all of our stu- dents, teachers, school staff, and families a successful school year. I look forward to see- ing you around the Valley this fall.
