our dying hour. . . Well, the way to enjoy it is to be merciful. We must bear in mind that our heavenly Father, having forgiven us ten thousand tal ents, expects us to forgive our brother the hundred pence.—W. Lincoln. 22. The Path to Glorification “Whom he called, them he also justi fied: and whom he justified, them he also glorified” (Rom. 8:30). Between our call and the glory there is a long path, and on that long journey there are many failures and falls, wounds and bruises, tears and fears. We need instruction, warning, exhorta tion, rebuke; but we also need com fort. . . We need to see the unclouded sky and to feel that the everlasting arms are beneath us. In this view of “God for us,” the whole path of sanc tification is not seen; only the bright end appears.—Adolph Saphir. 23. Prayer and Love “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching tiereunto with all perseverance and Application for all saints” (Eph. 6:18). Watching unto prayer and fervent love are closely linked. . . The man who prays only for himself will not find it easy to be in the right attitude toward God. But where the heart is filled with fervent love to others, prayer will con tinually rise to God for those whom we love. . . If you wish your love to grow and increase, forget yourself and pray, pray earnestly, for God’s children and His church,v—Andrew Murray. 24. Sympathy or a Saviour? “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me” (John 12:32). We so imperfectly understand why Christ died! If sympathy was all human beings need, the cross was not needed. What this sin-marred world needs is not “a little bit of love,” but a major surgical operation. . . . If a soul can find God on any other 1 terms, Christ died unnecessarily. If we think our sym pathy and understanding can heal sin ners, we are traitors to Him who died for our sins.—Western Recorder. 25. The One Who Cannot Fail “They shall perish, but thou remain- est: . . . thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail” (Heb. 1:11, 12). Circumstances change, friends change, but there is no change in Him. Oh, what a hold this gives the soul on the living God! . . . Under the painful sense of failure the heart is broken by the assurance that His love is the same and cannot change toward us, though chas tening may be necessary. But in place of doubts or dark despair under His chastening hand, there will be the bow ings and the meltings of worship. —Andrew Millar.
17. It Is Possible “With God all things are possible” (Matt. 19:26). I dare to say that it is possible, for those who really are willing to reckon on the power of the Lord for keeping and victory, to lead a life in which His promises are taken as they stand. . . . It is possible, by taking complete refuge in divine power, . . . to find that the things which formerly upset all our re solves to be patient or pure or humble furnish today an opportunity . . . to make sin powerless. —Handley C. G. Moule 18. Our “Upsetting Sin” “Let us lay aside . . . the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race” (Heb. 12:1). We all have what the Negro called our “upsetting sin,” but we do not al ways know what it is. . . Self is the house devil, after all, that every one of us has to fight. "Oh, how much good I am doing!” Are you? Self whispers that. When they told a noted , preacher at the foot of the stairs that he had preached a good sermon, he said, “The devil told me that before I left the pulpit.”—D. L. Moody. 19. Cross-Eyed Christians “If . . . thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light” (Matt. 6:22). Man has two eyes, yet his sight is single; a great deal may at one time enter his field of vision, yet his eyes center on ONE thing—they focus and function together. Should they move independently, he is cross-eyed, a hor rible affliction which causes him to see everything double and all distorted. If this be true of the natural man, it is much more true of the inner man of the soul.—W. E. Booth-Clibom. 20. Nothing Hidden “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 5:16). Julius Drusus, a Roman tribune, had a house so situated that several of its apartments lay exposed to the view of the neighborhood. A person came to him and offered, for five talents, so to alter it that it would not be liable to that inconvenience. “I will give thee ten talents,” said Drusus, “if thou canst make my house conspicuous in every room of it, so that all the city may behold in what manner I lead my life.”—Selected. 21. Mercy for Others “Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy” (Matt. 5:7). We had mercy shown us at the be ginning of our Christian course; we have had mercy shown us today, and shall need mercy, if Jesus tarry, Ui
