clergy and the laity, because Peter calls the entire church God’s “ claros.” (1 Peter 5:3.) All man-made distinctions are therefore factitious and fictitious. The Church—a Kingdom of Priests We are a kingdom of priests, fulfilling as anti-types the service performed by the sons of Aaron in the Levitical service, under the direction of our great High Priest above. Let us therefore magnify our office and faithfully discharge its solemn functions. Priesthood on earth has always been a failure. The priestly order of every age, whether in the false religions or in the true, has ever used the influence and position which religion has given, for its own advan tage. The priests of Israel were no exception. They became absorbed in the means, and turned them into an end, becoming involved in controversies as to the right mode of dividing the sacrifices, and as to the right perform ance of the various priestly duties. On this account the prophets were raised up and the order of prophets stands upon the ruins of the priesthood. The prophets of Israel were regarded as the opponents of the priestly party. When Jeremiah received his. commis sion, God declared that he had made him an iron pillar and brazen walls against the princes and the priests. (Jer. 1: 17-20.) There should be no failure on our part, however, because the all-prevailing intercession of Christ is the basis and the impulse of our service. “ The race of God’s anointed priests shall never pass away, Before His glorious face they stand, and serve Him night and day. Tho’ reason raves, and unbelief flows on in mighty flood, There are and shall be to the end, the hidden priests of God. His chosen souls; their earthly dross consumed by sacred fire, To God’s own heart their hearts ascend, in flames of deep desire. The incense of their worship fills His temple’s holiest place, Their song with wonder fills the heavens, the glad new song of grace.” D O N ’T F O R G E T ! that the cover pages contain matters o f special interest to You !
