Destination Montana Camp Guide

Discovery. Adventure. Fun. Education.

It has been said that you cannot have Scouting without the “outing.” In Montana, we take the “outing” part seriously. This is why Montana Council summer camps are becoming one of the most sought-after destinations in the country. Whether you’re a first-time camper or a seasoned outdoor veteran, our camps have something for you! There is no better place to experience all that mother nature offers with opportunities to develop new skills or master abilities in a safe and supervised environment. The Boy Scouts of America, Montana Council is proud to offer four camp locations and one high-adventure base in the state. Nestled between the peaks of the Moccasin Mountains in the heart of central Montana is the state-of-the-art K-M Scout Ranch, while western Montana’s pristine waters of Flathead Lake boasts the 64-acre aquatics paradise, Camp Melita Island. Both resident camps offer unique access to the wonders of the great outdoors. Near the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness is Camp Arcola, a perfect place for those who have mastered the basics and are looking for more rugged, independent adventure. On the eastern edge of the Flathead Valley near Bigfork, Grizzly Base serves as a home for units on their own adventure to nearby Glacier National Park and other local attractions. The Montana Outdoor High Adventure Base (MOHAB) offers an unrivaled atmosphere in a setting linked to the rugged Bob Marshall Wilderness. Packraft and hike for a week in the mountains in a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

DESTINATION MONTANA

Discovery. Adventure. Fun. Education. It’s all DESTINATION MONTANA.

MELITA ISLAND ON FLATHEAD LAKE

On the pristine waters of Flathead Lake lies an island gem called Melita. Consider this your own private Scouting island. Melita is paradise reserved just for Scouts to have the adventure of a lifetime. Programs at Melita Island are heavily water-based and are ideal for seasoned Scouts and Venturers looking for something different than the traditional summer camp. We also have land-based activities for those who prefer to stay dry. Island life inspires adventure through unique oppor- tunities like sailing, paddle sports, nature, hiking Wild Horse Island and emergency preparation programs, to name a few. Melita hosts programs for adult leaders too and the Advanced Camper Experience (A.C.E.) program designed to challenge older Scouts. Continual upgrades to our infrastructure and facilities make us Scouts BSA ready and places comfort and safety at the forefront of our camp.

“ The experience my son has gained. Leadership! Teamwork! Teaching! Land Conservation! Appreciation for our great country! Melita is a special place. ”

K-M SCOUT RANCH IN CENTRAL MONTANA

A world-class camp in the heart of Big Sky country, K-M Scout Ranch is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for adventure in Montana. Miles of ATV and mountain bike trails, a newly renovated spring-fed pond with underwater cameras for STEM and trout study, a climbing tower, shooting sports, nature and much more. Situated in central Montana in the heart of the North Moccasin Mountains, K-M is sure to have a program for each of your Scouts, no matter their age or interests. Beyond an exceptional Scouts BSA experience, Cub Scout, Webelos, and Arrow of Light Scout families can experience what a Scout overnight camp is like. K-M is the only Scout camp to have its very own ghost town. Everyone is invited to experience one night of “Haunted Camping,” in Kendall. See the stars as you’ve never seen them before and experience summer camp in Montana as only Scouts can.

“ The facility is breathtaking as are the views of the surrounding landscape … The staff, friendly, knowledgeable and eager to assist in even the smallest request … My two Scouts made memories that will help form who they become. ”

GRIZZLY BASE & CAMP ARCOLA

Grizzly Base Camp, located near Bigfork, Mt., offers Scouts and Scouters a wilderness location for troop camping opportunities and is also used for council training activities. Grizzly Base is the perfect base camp for Scout and Venture units looking to explore the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Glacier National Park for unit-planned high adventure activities. Close to town amenities and access to wilderness, Grizzly Base is a complete and picture-perfect launch-spot for units mapping out their own Montana adventures. Camp Arcola is located near the Pintler Range and is a place for those who have mastered the basics or want to get “off the grid.” This rugged mountain setting provides the backdrop to endless Scouting adventures. Get away from it all on this incredible piece of earth. Troops wishing to do their own thing will find oppor- tunities at Camp Arcola, with activities like fishing (Big Hole River), backpacking, cross-country skiing, snow sports, wilderness survival, and primitive camping.

“ Arcola is a wonderful, rugged place where you can get away and really embrace the outdoor spirit. It’s one of those special places that needs to be experienced to be understood. ”

“ Grizzly Base is the perfect spot to launch from to explore the wild nearby wilderness. The lake and camping areas are exactly what is needed to keep our Scouts practicing their skills before heading out on an adventure. ”

MOHAB MONTANA OUTDOOR HIGH ADVENTURE BASE

Leave your cell phone, laptops, and technology behind, MOHAB is all about trekking out into some of the most rugged wilderness in the continental United States. Based out of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch (TRMR) and encompasses more than 6,000 acres in the foothills of the east slope of the Rocky Mountains. The property abuts more than one million acres of national forest and wilderness, the center of which is at least 20 air miles from civilization. Share the landscape with elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, cougar, grizzly and black bears, bighorn sheep and Rocky Mountain goats. The MOHAB program is designed to give Scouts the skills and experience necessary to lead future expeditions of their own. While at Basecamp, Scouts learn how to effectively plan and execute a wilderness hiking and pack- rafting trek while gaining invaluable leadership skills and safety training. Each trek is provided with trained volun- teers whose primary responsibility is to offer insight into safe decision making and effective wilderness travel. The Montana Council is thankful for the generosity of the Boone and Crockett Club for allowing access to their facility.

“ Exploring the Bob Marshall Wilderness was an opportunity to showcase my Scouting skills while learning new ones in an environment that was rigorously challenging, but also fun. ”

NYLT National Youth Leadership Training courses are an intense, week-long youth-oriented leadership training held annually. Each course is conducted by highly qualified youth staff under the supervision of adult advisors using the National Youth Leadership Training syllabus developed by the Boy Scouts of America. Scouts who have attained the rank of First Class and will be 13 years of age by the start of the course should consider this advanced leadership experience. WOOD BADGE Trained volunteer leadership is one of the keys to a successful Scouting experience. As the core leadership skills training course for the Boy Scouts of America, Wood Badge focuses on strengthening each volunteer’s ability to work with and lead groups of youth and adults. Since its introduction in 1919, Wood Badge has been an essential component in the success of the Scouts. Volunteers who complete Wood Badge training receive a certificate, neckerchief, a leather slide, and two small wooden beads on a leather thong. Every Scout deserves a well-trained leader.
