o Avoid asking questions that can be answered with “yes” or “no.” o Ask open-ended questions so the applicant can provide more information by which you can evaluate suitability. Ask one question at a time and pause for a few seconds between questions o This will give the applicant a chance to talk more.  If the applicant “freezes” on a question, move on to the next question to allow time to “warm up.” o Remember that many applicants have low self-esteem and/or not been “interviewed” before.  Repeat or rephrase parts of the applicant’s responses in a questioning manner  Concentrate and listen closely. o Body language and tone of voice reveal a lot about an applicant. o Read between the lines. o Vague responses may be red flags. o Candidates generally exaggerate strengths and minimize weaknesses. o Listen for attitudes. o Silence is effective - wait for responses.  Effective listening enables follow-up questions. It is ok to pause after the applicant answer a question.  Do not get sidetracked or do most of the talking.  Adjust the level of your language to match the applicant’s. o Do not talk down to the applicant.  Ask the applicant if there any questions.  Know when to bring the interview to a close. o Obtain all necessary information and then end the interview. 8.5 Interview Questions Interview questions are subject to the same restrictions as the employment application. Refer to the previous section entitled “Use a Legal Application” for more detail on the do’s and don’ts. 8.5.1 Questions Not to Ask 1. National Origin/Citizenship 2. Are you, your parents, your spouse a U.S. citizen? 3. When did you/they become a citizen? 4. Where were you, your parents/spouse born? 5. What is your "native tongue”, ancestry, or national origin? 6. Are you legally eligible to work in the United States? 7. If hired, can you submit verification of your legal right to work in the U.S.? 8. What languages do you read, speak, or write fluently? (This question is okay as long as this ability is relevant to the performance of the job.) Age 1. How old are you? 2. When were you born? 3. When did you graduate from high school/college?
