Be bear aware say police OPP and conservation officers responded to a report of a black bear cub spotted near a residential lot in South Stormont early in the morning on May 27. Police incident report states the cub seemed to be roaming about and not posing a threat. OPP notified area residents, neighbourhood schools and bus companies that the bear cub was in the area to increase its chance of leaving the vicinity without any incident. OPP remind all homeowners in the Five Counties region to take steps to “bear proof” their property and reduce the chance of any unwanted wildlife from coming into a yard in search of food. That includes waiting until the morning of garbage collection to put bagged trash out for collection. Check the Ministry of Natural Resources website for advice on bearproofing property in rural areas. For emergency situations involving a bear in the area phone 911. For a non-emergency bear sighting report phone the toll-free Bear Wise line at 1-866- 514-2327. – Gregg Chamberlain

North Dundas mourns the loss of ex-mayor

Township of North Dundas Mayor Eric Duncan expressed his sadness at the passing of former North Dundas Mayor Claude Cousineau. Cousineau served two terms as the first mayor of the amalgamated Township of North Dundas, from 1998 to 2003. Prior to that, he served as Reeve, Deputy Reeve and Councillor in the former Winchester Township. Cousineau also served as Warden of the United Counties of SD&G in 1990. He was named the 2013 recipient of the North Dundas Community Builder Award which recognized him as a long-time leader in municipal government, the North Dundas Fire Service, and Morewood Recreation, among others causes. “Claude was the true definition of someone who told it like it is,” said Duncan. “He didn’t just talk about what needed to be done, he led the charge and led by example. His decades of service in public life demonstrate the North Dundas residents’ respect for that type of strong leadership.” – Francis Racine

Blithe the Spirit promises laughter

It’s a new twist on an old classic. The Seaway Valley Theater Company (SVTC) is presenting Blithe the Spirit , a play from Noël Coward. Charles Condomine, a successful novelist, wishes to learn about the occult for a novel he is writing, and he arranges for an eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, to hold a séance at his house. At the séance, she inadvertently summons Charles’s first wife, Elvira, who has been dead for seven years. The director of the play, Michael Dewolfe, is no stranger to theater. “I’ve directed several plays,” he said. “But I believe this is the oldest one the SVTC has ever done. It’s a very unique play and we’ve had to tackle several different challenges that we normally don’t face.” Blithe the Spirit will run on June 3, 4, 10, and 11 at 7:30 p.m. and on June 5 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are available at SVTC.ca — photo Francis Racine

medals, all neatly displayed behind tall glass showcases that are located on every wall of the small museum. “We have a lot of different artifacts,” he said, pointing to mannequins standing motionless behind the showcases. All of them sport different kinds of uniforms of several eras. Even though the museum’s collection contains several hundreds of artifacts, the curator, who has now been in charge of the institution for 23 years, stressed that it will never be complete. There are simply too many artifacts located around the world. “The funds allocated to us by theCanadian Armed Forces aren’t meant to be used to buy

The army could spend millions every year on artifacts, but there would always bemore. The world is filled with them.” Instead, Chamois recently spoke to the United Counties council in order to seek funding from them, which could in turn be used to obtain interesting and priceless

items. “Last year, they gave us $5000 and it really came in handy,” the curator added, smiling. Upon completing his sentence, he walked towards the back of themuseumand pointed upwards. Most interesting pieces Held up by small custom made metal frames, stands an old, dark green bicycle of which the likes can’t be bought at toomany places. Hidden deep within the walls of the mysterious Cornwall Armouries is one of the city’s best kept secret. The SD&G Highlanders Regimental Museum may be less than 2000 square feet in size, but don’t let its size fool you. The door to the small space creaks as Léon Chamois, themilitary historian who is at the helmof the SD&GHighlanders Regimental Museum, pushes it in. He switches the lights on and suddenly, rare pieces of history appear: helmets, original uniforms as well as reproductions and countless rifles and

their weapons and foldable bicycles. “They had been training with them for a long time in Britain,” explained Chamois. “They were supposed to use them to go far in France.” But the bikes weren’t well liked by the soldiers, he explained. They abandoned nearly all of them on the beach. “There were supposedly hundreds of them,” he said. “Young French boys and girls used them for several years after the war.” But these bicycles have become quite valuable and rare. “I always wanted to get one for the museum,” Chamois admitted. “But I couldn’t find one for the longest time. Some were for sale in Europe, but they were about 2000 euros, which end up being a lot of Canadian dollars once it’s shipped here.” Instead, the curator inquired about one in Calgary. “I told one of my friends to check out pictures of it and tell me what he thought about it,” admitted Chamois. “I didn’t know anything about them.” His friend then proceeded to tell him the man selling the bicycle was asking too much and besides, the one he was selling was cheaper and in better quality. “That caught me off guard,” the curator declared, smiling. “It really did. So we talked on the phone and not before long, it was in the museum.” The artifact is located next to other pieces that have a connection to theD-Day landings. There’s also a helmet, boots and a belt, all neatly placed on a nearby mannequin, When asked what the museum’s most prized possession is, Chamois pondered for aminute. “I always get asked that question, believe it or not.” Suddenly, he turned around towards a wooden flat surface. On it was a small brown frame, with seven medals placed within it. “This is something extraordinary,” he claimed.” The spotless medals belong to Lieutenant

Corporal George G. Pollard, an SD & G Highlander that was murdered after being captured by German forces serving under Major General Kurt Meyer. During the evening of June 7, 1944, 11 Canadian prisoners of war were shot in the back of the head. At Meyer’s war crimes trial in December 1945, he was found guilty of inciting his troops to commit murder. Ten of the deceased soldiers were found and given proper burial. Only Pollard’s remains have yet to be discovered. Instead, his family members donated his medals to the museum. “This is a memorial for him,” Chamois confided. “In essence, it’s sort of his unknown grave.” A museum with serious firepower The museum consists of two sides, the first and bigger one containing mostly uniforms and accessories and the second one being home to countless firearms. A quick walk through it confirms that the museumcould indeed fend off an invading army. “They have been deactivated to some extent,” hementioned, as he walked between the ceiling’s high glass showcases. Behind the glass are several Canadian, British, German and other foreign weapons. Ranging fromhandguns, to bayonets, rifles and machine guns, the weapons are all neatly showcased and cleaned. “Most of themwere donations,” expressed the curator. “We’ve actually only bought a few.” With the advent of stricter rules on firearms, several gun owners decided to turn in their weapons to themuseum instead of dealing with all the paperwork. The museum has been operating since the 1950s and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. “We’re hoping to expand soon,” indicated Chamois. “We started with a small space and we keep receiving more room. We’ve been called Cornwall’s best kept secret. I like it!”

Diving into the world of arts Carolyne Davis, an artist from Cornwall, gives finishing touches to one of her pieces. The woman has her paintings showcased throughout the world. — photo Francis Racine

FRANCIS RACINE francis.racine@eap.on.ca

Loretta Abbey School, in Toronto,” explained the woman. “She suffered from terrible psoriasis in her hand. She always had it bandaged and you could see it in her face that it hurt her. Yet she always encouraged us to paint.” The artist claims that the nun’s hard work and dedication instilled in her pupils an everlasting motto: you have to work hard to get what you want in life. Being born and raised in Toronto, Davis knows just how important connections are. “I’ve met so many people in my life,” she added “Most have been great to me.” Using those same connections has led her to become quite a well-known artist, whose pieces are showcased across the globe. “My paintings are showcased all throughout North America and even abroad”

she declared proudly. “I recently sold one at a show that is now in the Philippines, in a doctor’s office.” In addition, she stressed that several of her paintings are in Los Angeles. “I went there in 1989 during a trip and I brought several of my pieces there. I sold quite a lot of them.” Next to the woman is what she calls a Trip- Pick, a piece made up of three paintings. It features a tree with long limbs, the likes of which span on the three canvas. “They are made to be showcased without a frame,” Davis explained. “They aren’t supposed to touch.” On the workshop’s walls are several other paintings. The woman confided that she tends to create landscapes or eagles. “Those are my two favorite things to paint.

A landscape usually takes me about a day to complete.” But although her work tends to focus on more concrete subjects, she admitted that at least once amonth, she lets her creativity manage her paintbrush and the result is often stunning. “Sometimes, I let my brushes do the talking,” she said smiling. “It ends up being something very different. There’s one I did where the sky was purple and so was the tree in it. People liked it but I didn’t.” But it’s no wonder a good amount of her paintings contain purple, it’s her favorite color. “I’ve always loved purple,” declared Davis. “It was my grandmother’s favorite and if it was good enough for her, it’s good enough for me. Besides, purple is the color of royalty!”

One can feel an aura of wonder when entering Carolyne Davis’ workshop. Buzzing with activity and located within her Riverdale residence, the small space is home to several different interesting things. The sound of 1950s music breezes through the workshop, as Davis spins in her chair, a smile on her face. “I always need music whenever I paint,” she said. Her voice is calming and peaceful. The local artist has led quite an interesting life. Having been bestowed the Governor General medal in 1992, she has been an avid painter for 65 years. “I was encouraged to take up arts by Mother St-Martha, when I attended the
