B laige & Company recently released a report that focuses on the la- bel segment of the packaging industry, which is experiencing “an exceptional surge of interest from strategic and institutional investors in 2021.” The label segment continues to be one of the most active compo- nents of packaging M&A transactions in 2021, according to the report. After a below-average deal count of the pandemic-impacted 2020, the

Blaige & Company proprietary research indicates a return to the his- torical average label deal count in 2021 of 45 deals. Representing a nearly 5 percent increase over the pre-pandemic deal count in 2019 and a nearly 10 percent increase over the deal count in 2020, the label M&A activity is evidently thriving. Global transaction multiples are at record levels and expected to re- main strong. Buyers have access to large amounts of inexpensive cash and are prepared to invest in M&A opportunities. While the number of label sector M&A deals did not reach prior record levels, the compet-

most notable examples include: CCL,Avery Dennison, TC Transcontinental, and Winpak. CCL appears to be one of the most active players, Blaige reported, rap- idly expanding its film converting capabilities, aiming at significant economies of scale through backward integration. TC Transcontinental and Winpak, on the other hand, both historically known as film converters, are avid- ly entering the label market, broadening their mar- ket reach through forward integration. Private-equity funded consolidators are relatively smaller platforms that rely on local and domestic markets. These are la- bel converters that gain scale through add-ons within the label space, without a pronounced taste for verti- cal integration. Examples of such serial acquirers are Multi-Color Corp., Fort Dearborn Company, Resource Label Group, and Fortis Solution Group.

itive significance of the consolidations experienced in 2021 is “unprecedented.” The label converting segment analyzed by Blaige is comprised of hundreds of label converters. The seg- ment is made up of primarily small to mid-sized com- panies, as 85 percent of converters have annual sales of less than $100 million, with 75 percent under $50 million. The speed of consolidation in the label indus- try is gaining momentum in the wake of the post-pan- demic recovery, and has impacted all industry partici- pants. As Blaige reports,72 percent of the top 50 North American label companies from 2001 have been elim- inated or sold over the last 20 years, as opposed to 52 percent 10 years earlier. Label M&A consolidation has been close to the average of all segments in the packaging industry, leaving a tremendous opportuni- ty for future consolidation. Blaige is projecting for the consolidation of the label industry to reach 80 percent by 2025. Blaige & Company has identified two distinct strate- gies in the label segment M&A:one being employed by large, global consolidators, and the other by domestic, private equity backed consolidators. Global consolidators are large cross-border market participants, which are publicly funded and often seeking supply-chain vertical integration. Some of the

APR Launches Chemical Recycling Research Group TheAssociation of Plastic Recyclers (APR) has formed a new working group focused on identifying the key steps needed for chemical recycling processes to play an effective role in the recycling of plastic products. The APR Chemical Recycling Research Working Group, announced to APR members at the APR Annu- al Meeting, has the goal of clarifying the fundamental steps necessary to enable chemical recycling to com- plement traditional recycling technologies and what is needed for chemical recycling to become a successful component of the overall recycling infrastructure. “Chemical recycling was developed more than 50 years ago but has recently received renewed scrutiny as well as increased regulatory action as companies look for ways to increase plastics recycling to achieve their consumer recycling commitments,” stated Steve Alexander,APR President and CEO. Circular Economy The APR Chemical Recycling Research Working Group will be co-chaired by industry veterans CarlWil- liams,Technical Associate at Eastman, and Greg Janson, President and CEO of Granite Peak Plastics. “The APR supports the opportunity to accelerate a

circular economy with plastics and reduce dependen- cy on non-renewable resources through the intersec- tion of mechanical and chemical recycling technol- ogies,” said Williams. “Technology improvement and investment across the entire recycling value chain, including mechanical and chemical recycling, will re- duce plastic waste and provide the most sustainable materials to the industry.” Gamut To Acquire Davis-Standard Gamut Capital Management, L.P., a New York-based middle-market private equity firm, has signed a defin- itive agreement to acquire Davis-Standard, LLC and its affiliates from ONCAP, the middle-market private equi- ty platform of Onex. Study Analyzes Benefits Of Paper Recycling

In 2020, the recovery rate for all paper and pa- per-based packaging used in the United States was 65.7 percent. Corrugated boxes had a recovery rate of 88.8 percent, according to a new report from Two Sides, which collects data from the American Forest and Paper Association and the Census Bureau. According to the most recent government data avail- able(2020), paper and paper packaging is recycled more than any other material in the U.S. solid waste stream, including plastics (8.7 percent), glass (25 per- cent) and metals (34.1 percent).

Canada recycles almost 70 percent of its paper and cardboard, making Canada among the top paper re- cycling countries in the world. The national recovery rate of old corrugated boxes in Canada is estimated at 85 percent. In 2016, paper made up the largest portion of materi- al diverted from Canadian landfills (39 percent of total waste), followed by organic material (28 percent). The least diverted was plastic at 5 percent. Fifty-four percent to 56 percent of North American consumers surveyed believe only recycled paper should be used.7 However, this is not possible because fresh wood fiber from sustainably managed forests is essential to sustain a viable paper industry. Recycled fiber would not exist without harvesting fresh fiber. Overall, a maximum of 67 percent to 73 percent of fi- brous inputs used to make paper products can be sup- plied by waste paper; the rest needs to be virgin fibers. This is because at least 15 percent of paper products are permanently removed from the fiber cycle such as one-time use products (ex: tissues, sanitary products, medical supplies) and books or files that are stored for long periods of time. Every time paper is recycled, the fibers get shorter and weaker. After being recycled 5 to 7 times, the fi-

Packaging Can Help Restore Earth’s Health by Lars Holmquist Executive Vice-President, Sustainability & Communi- cations,Tetra Pak The world currently wastes one-third of all food pro- duced. The food processing and packaging industry can contribute to the transformation of food systems. Food packaging can adopt many approaches to a more sustainable supply chain. The United Nations’ latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report represents a code red for our global food systems. Stating that the global temperature, which rose 1.1°C between 1850-1900, is expected to reach or exceed 1.5°C Celsius of warm- ing, the report warns of overlapping risks across ener- gy, food and water sectors, creating a disastrous future for global food systems. These rising temperatures will reportedly reduce global yields in maize rice and, potentially, other cereal crops, while adversely affecting feed quality, spread of diseases and water-resource availability for livestock, with every increase of 0.5°C predicted to bring more frequent and intense agricultural droughts. Ironically, our global food systems themselves are par- tially to blame for the current situation, accounting for over a third of global greenhouse gas emissions. With the global population projected to hit 9.7 billion by 2050, demand for food continues to grow, yet the world currently wastes a third of the food it produces due to inefficient production and preservation practices from developing countries’ lack of infrastructure, and devel- oped countries’ unsustainable consumption practices. These gross inefficiencies reveal a toxic and unsus- tainable relationship between our global food systems and the planet, amounting to some $12 trillion in hid- den costs each year, which far exceeds the market val- ue of agricultural commodities. Though food production and environmental con- servation have historically been at odds, only through working together and finding common ground will we enable the global transformation of food systems to best address this dangerous cycle. Global challenges and crises have no borders and require international cooperation and multilateral re- sponses to the food system issues. From farmers to processors to packers to distributors to consumers around the world, we must overhaul the way we ap- proach, produce and consume food to adhere to the “planetary health diet”. These shared approaches are particularly critical as the world transitions to the post-pandemic recovery era.

bers become too short to bond into new paper.10 Vir- gin pulp must therefore be introduced into paper pro- duction to retain the strength and quality of the fiber. Mills producing fresh fiber use different processes than mills using recycled fiber. As a result, the releases to the environment differ. Recycled fiber production can result in higher or lower releases to the environ- ment than fresh fiber production depending on the type of release, the product being manufactured and the fuel being used. Fresh fiber production and processing usually re- quire more energy than recycled fiber processing, but it relies on renewable energy to a greater extent than recycled fiber processing. The paper recycling segment of the recycling indus- try collects, sorts and processes the recovered fiber into specification grade products. These products are sold and transported to paper mills for production into new paper products. The benefits of paper recycling include extending the supply of wood fiber, saving landfill space, avoiding greenhouse gas emissions of methane released when paper decomposes in landfills [methane has a global warming potential 25 times greater than carbon di- oxide], and reducing the amount of energy needed to produce some paper products.

Consumer Shopping Habits Begin To Stabilize

Flexo Market News

The latest figures from data, insights and consult- ing company Kantar’s retail survey show consumers’ shopping behavior is beginning to steady and some habits from the pandemic look set to stay. According to Kantar, take home grocery sales fell by 1.9 percent over the 12 weeks to October 31, 2021.Al- though in decline compared with the same 12 weeks in 2020, sales are still 7.3 percent higher than in 2019. The data found that UK shoppers are still making 40 million fewer trips to supermarkets per month than in 2019, while a fifth of households consistently order their groceries online each month. “Our shopping habits are beginning to settle at a new baseline as we’ve adapted our lifestyles through the pandemic,” said Fraser McKevitt, Head of Retail and Consumer Insight at Kantar. “The general trend towards bigger, less frequent trips to the supermarket seems set to stay.” McKevitt explained that UK households visited the su- permarket 15.7 times in the past month on average. This marks a slight increase from the 15.3 trips suggested by data in 2020.Overall, consumers are making fewer trips to the supermarkets. McKevitt added: “At this rate of change, it would take three years to get back to our old shopping patterns. Online sales have also leveled out. For the second month in a row, digital sales accounted for 12.4 percent of the total grocery market.” Early Preparation The data also showed that people are preparing for Christmas early this year: 4.7 million households bought mince pies in October and 1.6 million bought Christmas puddings. “After a tough 18 months, consumers are gearing up for bigger and better celebrations,”McKevitt explained. “With Christmas ads out earlier than ever and Christ- mas stock on the shelves, we’re keen to prepare early this year so we can dive headfirst into festivities. “Customers are also getting ahead on shopping for the big day itself. Frozen poultry sales are 27 percent higher year on year, with people spending an addition- al £6.1 million in the latest four weeks.” Like-for-like grocery price inflation stands at 2.1 per- cent in the latest four weeks, its highest level since August 2020. In the latest 12 weeks, inflation is 1.5 per- cent. The data suggests that prices are rising fastest in markets such as savory snacks, canned colas and crisps while falling in fresh bacon and vegetables. “As prices increase in certain categories, we can ex- pect shoppers to continue to visit several supermar-

tainerboard (i.e. corrugated boxes), 12.6 percent to produce boxboard (folding boxes like cereal or med- icine boxes, and gypsum wallboard, i.e. drywall/ fac- ings.), 8 percent for tissue and 5.6 percent for news- print. Exports accounted for 32.2 percent, down from 35.7 percent in 2019.Recycling one ton of paper saves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space.15 Approximately 80 percent of all U.S. paper mills use some recovered fiber to make everything from pa- per-based packaging to tissue products to office paper and newspaper. Commingled Collection In some places, municipalities are increasingly ask- ing households to combine all recyclable materials into a single collection container, a method called sin- gle stream, single sort or commingled recycling. Com- mingled recycling has contributed to higher recovery rates, making more recovered fiber available, but it has also significantly and adversely affected fiber quality. The trend toward commingled collection has also complicated efforts to increase the use of recovered fiber in grades with high fiber quality requirements. A study of the impact of commingled collection in the UK, for instance, revealed that “…the quality of re- covered paper from commingled systems is very far from the quality obtained with selective systems.” Generally speaking, recovered fiber can only be used to produce new paper of an equal or lower grade. The U.S. paper industry continues to demonstrate recycling leadership, with $4.1 billion in manufactur- ing infrastructure investments announced, planned or made from 2019-2023, to continue the best use of re- cycled fiber. Food Waste (Cont’d from Page 8)

To confront this immense challenge, we must think strategically and creatively, looking beyond existing frameworks to reinvent food production processes and employ more sustainable, innovative models. To demonstrate what this might look like in the food processing and packaging industries, here are three solutions focused on more environmentally sustain- able food systems for the future: 1. Adoption of a low-carbon circular economy As a global community, we face the challenge of minimizing the environmental impact of packaging while maximizing food safety and protection. Global food actors must drive innovation on materials and end-of-life solutions through collaborative approach- es, designing processes that reduce or eliminate this carbon footprint. While recycling is an important part of the solution, it is not enough. Ultimately, the only way we will sus- tainably support the food and nutrition demands of our growing population for generations to come is with the adoption of a low-carbon circular economy. Throughout human existence, increasing consump- tion and economic growth has led to depletion of nat- ural resources. The circular economy moves us away from this model to a system where we make use of the resources that are already in the value chain. The low-carbon circular economy goes a step further, also considering the climate impact of raw materials and the manufacturing value chain. Continued innovation in the food packaging and pro- cessing space will go beyond recycling to consider the broader, long-term environmental impact of a product. 2. Ambient, long shelf-life solutions that keep food safe World hunger is on the rise, yet an estimated third of all food produced globally is lost or goes to waste. Not only does wasted food lead to food insecurity, but it is the number one item by volume entering landfills,creat- ing methane gas and driving 8 percent of global warm- ing emissions. To mitigate food waste and combat mal- nutrition in developing countries, packaging solutions that keep food fresh for longer are imperative. Giv- en that the global food systems account for over a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, an increased focus on transparency and traceability will help deliver safe, nutritious and healthy food in a sustainable way, reducing operational risks and increasing supply-chain resilience.

From sourcing, to manufacturing, to transportation, to consumption, it is only with visibility into every step of the supply chain that companies can improve their over- all sustainability. To give an example, Unilever has been doing some very promising work in this area utilizing geospatial analytics in its sourcing to predict the possibil- ity of issues, such as deforestation, and take action. Tetra Pak is bringing about this transparency in the food packaging and processing industry with its “Connected packages”. Launched in 2019 and currently exceeding 2 billion in number, they are each labeled with a unique digital barcode, effectively turning packages into data car- riers. This digitalization enables end-to-end traceability for producers, greater supply chain transparency for retail- ers, and access to information for consumers. The quickest way to optimize human health and en- vironmental sustainability is through agriculture and food. This new IPCC report puts added pressure on the food industry to meet the UN Sustainable Devel- opment Goals. Here’s hoping it will mobilize its many potential partnerships and innovation to reform and ultimately save our global food systems.
