FISHING STORY

Within the communities of Erin and Hillsburgh, brook trout fishing is accessible at bridge crossings; however, anglers should be mindful of venturing onto private property. Limited access is available along Woolen Mills/Pine Estate Conservation Area, though no formal trails or parking areas are provided. Sticking to designated fishing areas is encouraged to avoid trespassing, says Jamie Williams, Marketing and Communications Specialist at Credit Valley Conservation. “People should stick to designated areas to ensure they are not on private lands where permission is required. Staying in designated areas helps ensure they are not accessing private land or restricted areas. Fines can be issued for trespassing.” Responsible fishing practices are also strongly encouraged to protect wildlife from harm. Visitors are asked to properly dispose of used fishing line in the recycling stations provided at parks, as discarded line can entangle wildlife, leading to injury or death. Lead tackle is also discouraged because it is poisonous to fish, loons, waterfowl, and shorebirds. Instead, anglers are encouraged to use tin or bismuth sinkers and jigs. During the annual fall salmon run, anglers should be aware that fishing opportunities on the Credit River are highly location-specific and carefully regulated to protect spawning fish. A full list of rules and guidelines for salmon fishing can be found on the Credit Valley Conservation website at: cvc.ca

Ken Whillans Conservation Area features two small ponds with fishing piers, while the Credit River flows along the west side of the property. Orchard Pond is home to northern pike, as well as rainbow trout stocked each spring. Brown trout can be found in the Credit River, while largemouth bass are abundant in Kidd Pond.
