parting of the hills. What first struck me now, in reading the New Testament, was something like this: Whatever doctrine I was pursuing, whatever pre cept Xwas enforcing, I found it fronting toward and terminating in the hope ot the Lord’s second coming. Is watchful ness amid the allurements of the world: enjoined? The exhortation is: “Watch therefore; for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come” (Matt. 24:42). Is patience under trial and injustice coun seled? The word is: “Be patient there fore^ brethren, unto the coming of the Lord” (James 5:7). Is an ideal church presented concerning whose deportment the apostle “needs not to speak any thing”? Its commendation is: “Ye turned to God from idols to servé the living and true God; and to wait for his Son from heaven” (1 Thess. 1:9,10). Is holy liv ing urged? This is the inspiring motive thereto: “That, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts; we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jestis Christ” (Titus 2: 12, 13). All paths of obedience and serv ice lead onward to the mountain. Our command to. service bids us “Occupy till I come” (Luke 19:13). In observing: the Lord’s Supper we “shew the Lord’s death till he come” (1 Cor. 11:26). Ini the injunction to fidelity the word is that we “keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Tim. 6:14), Let any candid reader collate the texts in the New Testament on this subject, and he will see that our statement as to- the pre-eminence of this doctrine is not exaggerated.—A. J. Gordon.
led to Christ at that time, in order to encourage and strengthen them and to lead them on into a deeper knowledge oi the wonderful things of -God. Praise God! They did not consider their work finished when the vacation ended, hut have kept these new converts on their hearts, have been praying for them, and now are planning this long trip on foot to help them on their way. Do you won der that we love these men and daily praise God for them? Most truly yours in Christ, FRANK A. KELLER, Changsha, Hunan, China. March 18, 1921. ite M WHERE LIBERALISM LEADS A number of years ago, Dr. Arthur Sachs, Professor in thè University of Breslau, a Jew, wrote: Every liberalistic religion carries in its bosom the germ of death. A religion without dogma is a creature or me ima gination which under no circumstances is able to give to individual man, much less to the human family, the necessary anchor-hold in this life and the hope for perfection in the beyond. At the moment it becomes "liberal,” it begins to de grade into a mere philosophy. No sys tem of philosophy has yet been able to satisfy the supernatural longings of man and we may confidently prophesy that philosophy will always fail in this re spect, for every philosophy originates in the human brain while religion repre sents a gracious divine revelation. WHERE ALL DOCTRINE HEADS IN “The doctrine of the Lord’s second coming as it appears in the New Testa ment,” says an .eminent Scotch preacher, “is like a lofty mountain which domin ates the entire landscape.” An admir able illustration! For in such a case, no matter what road you take, no matter what pass you tread, you will find the mountain bursting on your vision at every turn of the way and at every
