PR Services seeks more volunteers preparation, a “shuttle” service for clients who need to go to a medical appointment but have no vehicle of their own or are not able to drive, day programs, community suppers for companionship and social interaction, foot care, and other programs. Agency statistics for the 2013-2014 fiscal year show almost 3,000 clients in need of PRCS programs and services. The agency had a volunteer force of 491 to help admi- nistrative staff with those programs and services and that volunteer force put in more than 36,000 hours spread across all the programs. At the current minimum wage level for Ontario labour, this free work by volunteers would be worth almost $400,000. The agency has a projected budget this year of $100,000 for its programs and ser- vices. The Champlain Local Health Inte- gration Network (LHIN) covers 41 per cent of the PRCS operations budget and the agency has also received past financial support from the Fondation Jean Cou- tu, the Fondation MacEwen, Centraide- United Way Prescott-Russell, the Caisse populaire Desjardins group, along with

Prescott-Russell Community Services has two items on its wish list at the start of the new year: Continued financial support from the community for programs like Meals onWheels and success in recruiting more volunteers able to help agency staff deliver those programs to clients. “The challenge we are facing is finding vo- lunteers able to deliver them (services),” said Sylvie Leclair, executive director the Pres- cott-Russell Community Services (PRCS). Leclair said the agency has an urgent need for more volunteers who are licensed to drive, have their own vehicle, and also at least a few hours to spare each week to help with Meals on Wheels, medical appoint- ments shuttle service, and other programs that may require some travel. The main mission of the PRCS is to help Prescott-Russell area residents who are homebound, for various reasons, to be able to continue living in their own homes and not have to move to a community living facility. Most of the clients the agency serves are seniors and people with special needs, some of whom are also seniors. Services that the agency provides for its clients include the Meals on Wheels program, which provides nourishing meals at the door several times a week for clients who may have difficulty either shopping for groceries or doing their own meals

private donations and some client fees. The PRCS has a request in to the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) for a $30,000 support grant. The request is now part of the UCPR budget process. Anyone interested in becoming a vo- lunteer with the PRCS can contact Leclair, toll-free, at 1-800-267-0853, or email sle- clair@servcompr.com.

Feel SAD? Get outside in the light passed and all the New Year’s Eve festivi- ties, along with the January First sales, are finished. Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, chief public medical health officer for the Eastern On- tario Health Unit (EOHU), observed that the solution to the situation is easy and cheap. “Expose yourself to the light as much as possible,” he said. “It (SAD) has to do with lack of light stimulation.”

of a window with the curtains drawn back and the blinds pulled up. The natural light helps stimulate the body’s defenses, includ- ing producing vitamins A and D, which help to combat “cabin fever”. There are special light bulbs available that can simulate the natural light. But actual daylight is best, and Dr. Roumeliotis noted getting outside and being active is even bet- ter, if possible. Proper nutrition and rest make up the rest of the cure. “Good diet, good sleep habits, get exercise.”

For anyone in the Prescott-Russell area feeling a touch of “cabin fever”, the “New Year’s blues”, or “January blahs”, as they are also known, there is a simple cure. Get outside in the daylight. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is the technical and official term for that down- and-out feeling many people experience after the rush of the Christmas season has

The type of light needed to reduce or pre- vent SAD is ordinary daylight, even if it just involves sitting, reading for an hour, in front
