PUMPKIN PIE, FAMILY GATHERINGS, AND A FOUR-DAY WEEKEND Why Thanksgiving Is One of the Most Relaxing Times of the Year

Who doesn’t like pumpkin pie? This was the question I was asking myself, eyeing the pie I’d brought to my sister’s yearly Thanksgiving gathering, which sat on the counter with only a single slice missing — the one I’d eaten. Throughout the meal, and long after it, the pie sat untouched. Every once in a while, I’d notice it and wonder how it was possible that my entire family didn’t like the classic fall treat. But it was true. Later in the evening, my sister pointed at the pie. “You know nobody here likes pumpkin, right?” she said, laughing.

I will admit, though, that the food takes center stage. My sister and my brother- in-law are fantastic cooks, so everything they bring to the table is completely delicious. From the stuffing to the cranberries to the mashed potatoes, everything comes out perfectly. Unlike most people, the turkey doesn’t matter all that much to me. After all, you can get turkey any time of the year, but how often do you get homemade stuffing? Or, for that matter, pumpkin pie? The preparations and the feast usually only take a few hours, and then we all go our separate ways. But it’s one of those gatherings that I’m grateful to even have the opportunity to be part of. The rest of the four-day weekend is for relaxing and unwinding. I’ll amble around the house and check out a football game or two. I’ll go on a walk in the cool air to get some exercise, or maybe read a book, welcoming the rare, complete mental break the holiday gives me. And then, almost always, I’ll make it out to the movie theater to see whatever big film has come out for the holidays, and maybe bring the kids along. It all adds up to one of the most carefree long weekends of the year. Oh, and you know I’m breaking out that pumpkin pie again this year. Thanksgiving just wouldn’t be the same without it. –Chris Milkie

Obviously, I’d had no idea. But, as I was leaving and packing up my share of the leftovers, I realized that this wasn’t exactly a problem. I wasn’t about to complain about having a whole pie all to myself for the next couple weeks. Still, it’s those kinds of things that weird you out a little around your family, and that make you wonder how you grew up in a clan that’s so different from yourself. I’d tell you that hanging with my family is my least favorite part of Thanksgiving — which I’m sure would be met with a resounding “me too!” from some of my readers — but, of course, that’s not really true. It’s always a good time to get together with my siblings at my sister’s place down in Kenosha, and hang out for a few hours and catch up, even if they somehow dislike the best dessert of the season.

HERE IS WHY! “I had lived for years with deformed feet from bunions. I accepted them as they were until they began to hurt no matter what shoes I wore. I am a nurse, and very particular about data and outcomes, so I wanted to seek a surgeon who had extensive experience with both evaluating and operating on feet with this type of an issue. Dr. Chris Milkie was recommended to me by a number of people as both very skilled and transparent about his outcomes. I sought him out and have never looked back! He was thoughtful and complete in his assessment and recommendations. He thoroughly explained the procedure and post op recovery, and they went exactly as he said they would. He felt it was in my best interest to have both feet done at the same time. At first, I was hesitant, but I trusted him. I am very happy I got it all done in one surgery. The recovery was very manageable and my feet feel and look great. The staff are warm, friendly, and well-informed. I would, without reservation, recommend Dr. Milkie and his team.” YOU SHOULD SHARE US! $25 Off Your First Visit to One of Our 4 Convenient Wisconsin Podiatry Offices Your feet are important to us, and we believe we can offer you exceptional treatment for your foot or ankle pain. AS NUTRITIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES HAVE ADVANCED IN RECENT YEARS, there have been an increasing number of people kicking keto, Atkins, Weight Watchers, paleo, and the dozens of other catch-all diet plans to the curb, seeking instead to personalize their nutritional intake. In response, several startups have sprouted up to capitalize on this growing trend. One of the companies leading this charge is Habit, a business that analyzes clients’ DNA and uses it to suggest highly specific and personalized meal plans. Users drink the Habit Challenge Shake, collect three small blood samples using an at-home kit they received in the mail, and then send them off to Habit for analysis. Another company, Viome, uses twice-annual at-home testing kits to collect stool samples and in-home measurements in order to analyze the user’s “microbiome” and metabolism, focusing on gut health to achieve results. Then there’s InsideTracker, an app-focused startup that promises, hilariously, to give you a “selfie from the inside.” Users first choose from a wide array of tiered plans, from the (relatively) inexpensive “DIY” to the $589-per-month “Ultimate” plan. InsideTracker, like the previously mentioned procedures, uses DNA data, breaking it down into 7–42 biomarkers that users can easily check on their phone, trying to keep them in optimal zones. You probably won’t be surprised to learn that these services are pretty expensive. Not only that, but according to Popular Science and many other sources, the jury’s still out on whether they actually work. Though initial research on personalized nutrition is promising, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics still doesn’t recommend nutrigenetic testing for dietary advice, due to the lack of sufficient evidence. Still, it may be that those with a little spare income who have struggled with traditional diets in the past may find a “selfie from the inside” to be just what they need. PICKING THE PERFECT PAIR OF SNOW BOOTS FOR YOUR FEET

When the snow starts to fall and the temperatures drop below freezing, nothing can keep your feet nice and toasty better than a pair of well-made winter boots. But it can be hard to find the perfect pair, especially if you already have podiatric problems. Before you drop a hundred bucks on something that may harm your feet, here are a couple questions you should ask yourself.

with the assumption that you’ll be wearing thick wool socks.

Speaking of which, you’ll want to bring along a pair of sturdy winter socks when you go to try on boots. If you wear flimsy cotton socks, your feet are likely to end up soaked even if you have the most waterproof boots. Instead, stick to wool, Isowool, shearling, fleece, or other similar materials.

Pick a pair that looks right on the shelf and start out with your normal shoe size. With the aforementioned winter socks on your feet, stand and walk around the store to check how well the boot fits. Do keep in mind, though, that most winter boots often need some time to break in before they feel snug and cozy. While searching the store, it’s important to keep your unique feet in mind. If you suffer from plantar fasciitis or have another issue with your foot’s arch, you’ll definitely want to find a pair with removable insoles. That way, you can put your orthotics inside. Never buy a pair of boots that irritates your foot no matter how warm they are; that’s just asking for trouble.

How Warm Should They Be? Whether you’re walking around town or trudging through the snow — or both — you don’t want soggy, sweaty feet. Most quality winter boot manufacturers will rate each pair for a specific temperature range, from under -40 degrees Celsius to just below freezing. In the Milwaukee area, you probably won’t need boots for weather less than -10 degrees Celsius, which is 14 degrees Fahrenheit. How Do I Find the Right Size? Sizing for snow boots varies far more than with ordinary shoes. Some manufacturers, but not all, will size up

Beloved Balloons

ICONIC MACY’S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE BALLOONS

PIKACHU The Pokémon mascot didn’t appear until 2001, but he’s become a star attraction, showing up every year since. Bright, expressive, and impossible to miss, Pikachu checks off all the boxes for a successful balloon character. For 16 years, those who predicted that Pokémon was just a fad have gotten a big, yellow reminder of just how wrong they were.

Thanksgiving is a holiday full of traditions, from turkey and stuffing to football and naps. Since 1924, the Macy’s Parade has grown to become not only a Thanksgiving staple but also the world’s largest parade. Over 3.5 million people attended the parade last year, with another 20 million tuning in from home. The main attraction is always the massive character balloons, which first graced the skies in 1927. Over the decades, some of these balloons have become nearly as famous as the character they depict.

FELIX THE CAT When the Felix the Cat balloon appeared in 1931, it set the standard for all characters to follow. Sadly, the original balloon got tangled in wires and caught on fire, so it has been lost to history. Felix’s influence on the parade is so immense, however, that when Macy’s brought him back in 2016 for the parade’s 90th anniversary, they recreated his original design. Without Felix’s debut, the parade might look a lot different today. SNOOPY When it comes to balloon characters, none is more famous than the classic “Peanuts” beagle. His first balloon floated through the sky in 1968, and he’s been a regular fixture ever since. Charles Schultz’s famous pooch holds the record for most variations in a parade (eight) and most total appearances (40). Though Snoopy doesn’t come out every year, he usually closes the show when he does.
