The EOWC determined on three priori- ties for its attention during the coming year. The board received a report from Superintendent David Coombs on the update during its Dec. 14 session. The protocol guide was developed in 2011 to outline goals for coordinating efforts between the police, the district, and area schools for handling emergency situations or alerts involving student safety. Recent revisions to the protocol deal with mandatory notice to police of any violent risk assessment issues, school lockdowns during emergencies, dealing with intruders at school or other district facilities, situations involving cyber harassment or luring, incidents involving bomb threats or the discovery of suspicious packages or materials. The report also explained how the district is updating staff at all levels on the protocol and its recent revisions. – Gregg Chamberlain School district updates police protocol

School district revisions The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) has some new figures to file with the Education Ministry on both its enrolment and budget projections for the current operating year. The CDSBEO board received revised estimates from Finance Manager Ashley Hutchinson during its Dec. 20 session that show a 0.9 per cent increase in student enrolment figures for the 2016-2017 term “which is very positive” according to Hutchinson. The confirmed enrolment increase means a revision of the project budget for the term. The new total operations budget figure is $170.6 million along with a capital projects budget of $10.4 million. The CDSBEO will forward the revisions to the ministry. – Gregg Chamberlain programs for Eastern Ontario. The caucus will continue lobbying for modernizing the current OPP service system for rural municipalities and also the policing cost system. “The EOWC remains concerned about the increasing costs of certain services in the region,” stated Quaiff, “particularly when we think about our residents and businesses and their ability to pay.”
