61st Annual Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival
Custer State Park • Custer • Times Vary Watch cowboys and cowgirls as they roundup and drive the herd of approximately 1,300 buffalo on September 25. The Buffalo Roundup begins at 9:30 a.m. with parking lots opening at 6:15 a.m. (arrive early). On September 24-26 enjoy 150 vendors offering their fine arts and crafts for sale. Start the morning with a pancake feed and enjoy ongoing Western and Native American entertainment under the big top. All events and vendors will be located on the festival grounds across from the Peter Norbeck

The Sidewalk Arts Festival is a free outdoor event featuring more than 230 vendors showcasing fine art, folk art, and handcrafted goods from across the region. The festival also includes nonprofit organizations, food vendors, live entertainment, and activities for kids. This event is a fundraiser for the Washington Pavilion and is the region’s largest one-day arts festival. Studio 616’s specialty is commercial office space, where the team tailors designs that are efficient and make sense for that particular business’s immediate needs, along with keeping future scalability in mind. “Truthfully, we design to each customer's unique tastes, style, etc.,” explained Whitney. One project the team is proud of is Climate Systems , which was a roughly 10,000 square foot office remodel. The renovation focused on creating an open, collaborative space with meeting rooms, a phone room, and enhanced natural lighting throughout the business.

After years of traveling in the building industry and being away from his family, Tom Jurgens wanted to do something that would keep him closer to home to watch his kids grow up. “I had been in the industry for many years, I saw practices that I didn’t agree with, and I thought I could make a difference,” said Tom. “I made the decision to start my own company.”
Originally utilizing his relationships with subcontractors to meet the area’s needs, Raeco Builders soon evolved and grew into more employees with the ability to provide more self-performance in order to deliver the quality customers had come to expect. “All projects follow our proven process of Consultation , Design , Customer Approval , Manufacturing , Construction , and Completion ,” described Tom. The company is now located in Sioux Falls and is known as one of the top design-build construction companies in the state, specializing in customized steel buildings.
The entrepreneur launched Raeco Builders in Parker in 2009, which is named after his children, Raelin and Cole .

“We meet with potential clients that have a dream/vision in mind and see it through to the end,” explained Tom. “Raeco has taken many projects from a napkin drawing to reality. We listen to their needs and wants, ask questions to determine what they’re going to use the building for, future growth plans, etc.”
A project highlight was Ideal Tent & Event Rentals located in Tea. The company specializes in large tent rentals along with other party details, and also provides custom event planning and design services.
Ideal’s owner, Blake Dede , felt they outgrew their space in 2019 and chose Raeco Builders to partner on the project for a new “home.” Dede knew he wanted a metal building to support the interior structure, but didn’t want a conventional look that could come with a metal building.

"Our goal was to create a coastal/ Cape Cod aesthetic, and marry that with custom exterior lighting that would make us stand out to the passing interstate and in-town traffic,” said Dede. “We also knew we would need to meet the neighborhood covenants, and achieve all of this with the skeleton of a metal building." Raeco did just that and also got creative with the interior, featuring a custom warehouse, showroom, and design room. Another project that stands out is Trussbilt in Huron. “It was a unique build involving the placement of overhead cranes, as well as navigating land constraints to meet their expansion needs,” recalled Tom. Raeco Builders just finished a build in Beresford for Sioux Corporation . This was a unique project because the company was able to tie into their existing building, aiming to not disrupt their day-to-day operations. “I’m truly a fan of everything we have built,” said Tom. “No two projects have ever been the same; there is always a component of the project that makes it special. This is what drives my passion for delivering on our commitment to our customers.”

Currently, they’re working on a project in Brandon, making steady progress on a pre- engineered commercial build (pictured). As it’s an investment property, Raeco Builders has the ability to work closely on colors, layouts, and the overall design. “The Brandon project is a fun one for us,” said Tom. “The customer is both a friend and a company in the industry we have worked with for years.” While the team enjoys being creative with their designs, they also make sure to be realistic with the needs of customers and their budgets. “For most customers/businesses, this building is a major part of their livelihood,” said Tom. “We are transparent and upfront with them on the costs and budgets to give them a realistic overview of the project. GIVING BACK WITH DESIGN

There has been a long history of working with non-profits for Koch Hazard Architects of Sioux Falls, with the basis being to support the community—an important legacy of former owners Ralph Koch and Bob Hazard . One of their first non-profit partnerships involved The Children’s Home Society . “The Children’s Home Society was a favorite client of Bob Hazard’s, and the firm has done all of their work on the Sioux Falls campus,” said principal Stacey McMahan . More recently, the Koch Hazard Architects crew completed the Children’s Home Society’s Shelter for Family Safety , which provides an expanded facility and enables programming that was impossible or difficult in their original location on Holly Avenue. “The new shelter is generally already running at capacity providing services to so many more people needing care—mostly women leaving abusive situations, but also some men, and abused and neglected children,” said McMahan. “Their work has an incredible impact.” One of several unique elements to the project was special requirements around safety and security, given it's a place where people escape abusive situations. For example, there are unique screening elements in front of residential windows that allow the windows to be opened for fresh air and views out, but distort views into the rooms from passersby. “Their old facility had lots of bedsheets covering the windows,” described McMahan. “The residential wings are two stories and surround a large playground on three sides, providing lots of ‘eyes on the children’ like a village. The building sort of hugs the playground as an element of safety.” The entry element is one of the architect’s personal design favorites. Children’s Home’s old facility had multiple entries, which created confusion for visitors, and especially those in panic situations seeking shelter. Koch Hazard Architects created a clear point of entry in their new facility marked by a 70 foot curving wall made of fieldstone with a river of white rocks flowing through it. “Our hope was that it would provide some comfort being a natural and familiar material everyone has seen piled in field corners in the countryside, perhaps providing a distraction for traumatized kids entering the facility,” said McMahan. “It leads from the outside landscape to the entry walk and into the lobby, depositing people at the reception desk.” The firm made several trips out to Walt Bones’s farm to pick through a big pile of fieldstone. McMahan helped organize them on the construction site, drew the river with a sharpie where the white stones should go, and collected donated rocks from friends as well. “It was so fun to design and help execute,” she recalled.

GETTING INVOLVED Early on at Koch Hazard Architects, McMahan was involved in creating design-related non-profits with Jeff Hazard. Among
these were the South Dakota Architecture
Foundation , Chartreuse: Bright Green Research , Sioux Falls Green Project , and the Sioux Falls Design Center . Another was a series of conferences called Plain Green where the firm brought in speakers from the region, from California and other states, and even Zimbabwe to speak about environmental issues and design-related efforts going on in the world. Koch Hazard Architects hosted eight conferences, partnering closely with South Dakota State University .
Currently, Koch Hazard Architects is in the construction phase for the LifeScape Campus , which started in earnest with the non-profit in 2021. The late Jeff Hazard worked with them for more than 10 years prior doing facility assessments and helping them imagine a new campus facility. With his death in 2019, McMahan inherited the project as they began concept work and has been working closely with the LifeScape team, who she calls “a dream.” “This project has been challenging, but so rewarding,” she said. “LifeScape will provide medical, therapy, education, and residential services at this one specialty facility, and they have been essentially involved at every step.” The building, McMahan says, is Koch Hazard Architect's interpretation of the non-profit’s own design work, creating solutions for kids with disabilities. A few of the stories to help illustrate their needs included a young boy who could climb brick walls with his fingers and toes, regularly getting holes
in the walls from strong children with complex behaviors, staying away from long hallways so kids don’t run off, and avoiding fences around the playgrounds. Through many meetings and workshops, the firm was able to respond creatively to these constraints while working together with LifeScape. A solution to the playgrounds was to use the building as fences, having several courtyards serving as playgrounds. Koch Hazard Architects worked closely with HDR out of Omaha for planning and health design support, and for the design of the building shell as well. “There is a section of the facility called the Therapy District where therapists teach kids to live in everyday physical environments,” said McMahan. “It has fun elements in it, like the front portion of a bus where kids practice getting on and off, and also the back end of a car where they practice opening the rear door and getting in the back seat.”

It also includes a porch structure with front door and doorbell, café seating, kitchen setup, and a market with a POS system and reach-in cooler, all to practice and improve life skills. A few other non-profit honorable mentions are the Sioux Falls Area Development Foundation , the St. Francis House , The Banquet , and Feeding South Dakota . Koch Hazard Architects designed the original Feeding South Dakota building, which McMahan says is in dire need of expansion to meet the growing need for food as the city grows. The team is starting the design for an expanded parking area, and next on the docket is a warehouse addition and an office rearrangement to better accommodate volunteers. “The organization in Sioux Falls is the base for statewide food provision through mobile distribution centers for thousands of people,” said McMahan. “Our work will help them do their jobs better, benefitting so many in South Dakota. It’s rewarding work because we know their impact will be greater.”
The firm itself is in an exciting phase, filled with a talented and dedicated team. McMahan says she also is invigorated by their location in the Falls Center building at 431 North Phillips Avenue. The area has completely evolved in the 30 years since the building was renovated in 1993 at the north end of Phillips Avenue where it ended at 5th Avenue. “We’ve watched downtown slowly develop creeping (and leap-frogging) north right in front of our second story windows, and it’s continuing in a big way with the Smithfield site,” said McMahan. “I feel we are in the catbird seat now after a lot of years when we were the only building with activity on North Phillips.”

A Howling New Habitat AT THE BRAMBLE PARK ZOO
A revitalized wolf exhibit is bringing new life to an area of the Bramble Park Zoo in Watertown.
The idea of a new wolf habitat was in the making since zookeeper Olivia Wulff started at the Zoo in 2014.
The recently unveiled habitat represents a major investment in both animal care and the visitor experience.
“We always knew our exhibit was outdated and ‘bare bones’ from my beginning here and was mostly adequate for the current animals, but definitely had lots of room for improvement and updates,” recalled Wulff. Former zoo director Dan Miller ignited plans for the project before he retired, and it was shaped further after current zoo superintendent, Stacy Plocher , continued to formulate plans and fundraise for the much-needed upgrades.
With roughly $600,000 in renovations, it replaced an exhibit that was more than 35 years old and doubled the wolves’ indoor space, added modern features such as heat, running water, and improved drainage, and provided a new glass viewing area where visitors can get remarkably close to the animals. It’s also an important part of the zoo’s work toward regaining AZA accreditation.

Bramble Park Zoo’s most recent pack of wolves, Titan , Ty , Trigger and Tee , sadly passed away from age-related complications, as well as a sibling pair of coyotes, Wiley and Delilah . “That was the time we chose to start the demolition process of the old habitat since we decided as an entire team that it wouldn’t have been a good transition for the aged canines to move homes for the construction process,” said Wulff. “It would have been extremely stressful for them due to their geriatric age and potential health risks.” With over 500 animals at the zoo, including around 100 species, the team is focused on providing their animal collection with quality habitats and giving guests the most wholesome experience they can without crowding. “That’s why our improvement projects are so important to us and to the animals,” said Wulff. Construction took around a year, beginning last spring and wrapping up at the beginning of this summer. One of Wulff’s favorite parts about the new habitat is the close and personal viewing windows.
