When Sir Christopher Wren was engaged in demolishing the ruins o f old St. Paul’s in order to make room for his new cathe dral, he used a battering-ram with which thirty men continued to beat upon a part o f the wall for a whole day. The workmen, not discerning any immediate effect, thought this a waste of time; but Wren, who knew that the internal motion thus communicated must be operating, encouraged them to persevere. On the second day, the wall began to tremble at the top, and fell in a few hours. If our prayers and repentances do not appear to overcome our corruptions, we must continue still to use these gracious batter ing-rams, for in due time by faith in Jesus Christ the power of evil shall be overthrown. Lord, enable me to give hearty blows by the power of thy Holy Spirit until the gates o f hell in my soul shall be made to totter and fall. Mozart, the great musician, walking one day in the.suburbs o f Vienna, was accosted by a beggar o f a very prepossessing appearance and manner, who told his tale o f woe with such effect as to interest the great composer strongly in his fa v o r b u t , the state of his purse not correspondirig with the impulse o f his humanity, he desired the applicant to follow him to a coffee house. Here Mozart, drawing some paper from his pocket, in a few minutes: composed a minuet, and, with a letter he gave to the distressed man, desired him to take it to his publisher. A composition from Mozart was a bill payable at sight; and to his great surprise the now happy beggar was immediately presented with five double ducats.' What a great advantage it is ’ to have a divine Friend who has unlimited credit in heaven, and in whose Name we may come to the treasure house when we are in need! •ii? In his-seventy-third ye'ar, Robert Raikes, the founder of Sun day schools, in company with Joseph Lancaster, his fellow laborer, revisited the spot in Gloucester where-his first school was held. “ Pause here,” said the venerable man, uncovering his head and closing his eyes:'. He stood for a moment in silent prayer. After that, with tears of joy rolling down his cheeks, he said, “Here I stood when I saw the destitution of the children, and the desecration of the Sabbath by the inhabitants o f the city. As' I asked,'‘Can anything be done?’ a voice answered, ‘Try.’. - I did try, and5see what God hath wrought!” All are not permitted to reap so rich a harvest as did that good man. But be the suc cess great ojr little, the promise will prove true, “He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” F ebr uar y 8, 1928 Text: Jno. 14:13-14 F ebr u ar y 9, 1928 T ex t: Psa. 126:6
