JAMIE KAH 100
“I RIDE THE HORSE BASED ON HOW IT IS FEELING. I JUMP OUT THE GATES AND LET THE HORSE SHOW ME WHERE THEY WANT TO SIT AND WHERE THEY WANT TO TRAVEL.”
JAMIE KAH 100
A STAGGERING SUCCESS BY CEL IA PURDEY
Jamie Kah has made history by riding 100 metropolitan winners in a season, and nowwe can’t see what this horse-loving jockey will be aiming for next. VRC Chairman Neil Wilson said the record-breaking milestone was an extraordinary achievement that will be celebrated by racing and sports fans across the country. “Jamie continues to inspire the next generation of jockeys and sportspeople with her understated approach and single-minded focus on being the best she can be,” Mr Wilson said. “Her achievements on the track are underpinned by a genuine love for the animal that has seen her form rewarding partnerships with the horses she has ridden to victory, many of whom have reached new heights as a result.” “From her first Group 1 win on Harlem in the 2019 TAB Australian Cup to her 23 wins at Headquarters this season, Jamie holds a special place in Flemington history,” Mr Wilson said. Just weeks into her move to Melbourne in 2019, Jamie Kah achieved a lifelong goal. In March that year, she rode and won her first Group 1 race aboard Harlem in the $1.5 million TAB Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington. Now, she has become the first jockey to ride 100 Victorian metropolitan winners. It’s an amazing achievement in such a short time and a testament to her sheer talent. Kah’s potential was obvious early in her career when, during the first six months of her apprenticeship, she rode 40 winners. Now, she is leading the metropolitan and Flemington jockeys’ premierships and had her first ride in the Lexus Melbourne Cup last year, finishing third on Prince Of Arran. She won the 2021 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning aboard Nature Strip and was named the 2021 Wakeful Club’s Lady of Racing. But Kah is modest about her achievements.
“I’m very humbled by the support and opportunities I get, and you’re only as good as the horse you are riding,” she said. Kah’s parents, John and Karen, are former Olympic speed skaters who raised their daughter on a 200-acre property outside Adelaide. Horses were always part of the family. She began showjumping in her youth, and represented Australia at the Mounted Games in England in 2010. Kah switched to racing at 14, working for trainer John Macmillan. After a few years of competition which provided some challenges, Kah took a break in 2015 working overseas, showjumping and riding trackwork. Returning refreshed, the jockey was committed to working even harder than before. It has paid off in spades. Now, in addition to racing, Kah and fiance Clayton Douglas run Bradlee Park, offering training, re-training of retired racehorses and spelling. Rehoming is a particular passion, and she has recently taken in the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Dollar For Dollar.
JAMIE KAH 100
This love she has of the horse always shines through. “When I won the Black Caviar Lightning on Nature Strip it was unreal ... when I pulled up and gave him a pat I just enjoyed that moment with the horse and thought, ‘wow, we did it, and you tried so hard.’ As for the future, the sky’s the limit. As well as conquering her dreams on the track, Kah is looking forward to her wedding and honeymoon. It is clear, however, that she will also be just as happy on her farm surrounded by animals. WALKING A NEW PATH BY SARAH MARINOS AND CEL IA PURDEY
He was the popular mudlark sprint star that struck a chord with the racing public and helped his trainer Mick Bell through some of his most difficult times. Now, Jungle Edge has retired and is on a new path helping others, finding a new home at Equine Pathways Australia, which aims to help those with a disability engage in equine sports and activities . Jockey Jade Darose struggles to recall exactly what trainer Mick Bell said to her after she rode racing stalwart, Jungle Edge, to victory in the Listed WJ Adams Stakes (1000m) on 1 February 2020. All she does remember is that emotions were running high when she passed the finishing post.
It was Darose’s first stakes success in a 20-year career, and it was also her first race on Jungle Edge.
Hundreds of kilometres away at his home in Lakes Entrance, Ian Dunkley was watching the race on TV with his wife. The managing owner of Jungle Edge hadn’t been able to attend Caulfield because he’d been part of a working bee clearing up after devastating bushfires swept through the area. As the boss of Buchan and Gelantipy Racing Club, Dunkley had been rallying the community to carry out urgent repairs to the fire-damaged track post the January 2020 fires, so that the annual Buchan Cup race day could go ahead in two weeks’ time. For Mick Bell, too, Jungle Edge’s Caulfield victory was bittersweet. It coincided with the third anniversary of the death of his beloved wife, Bev, to breast cancer. Only the night before the race Bell had spent the evening with their three sons and Bev’s mum, reflecting on how they’d managed to navigate their loss.
“I shed a tear when Jungle Edge won. I was more emotional than I usually am,” said Bell.
Owned by Michelle and Chris Strickland, Ian Dunkley and a number of other investors, Bell believed the horse was one of Australia’s best wet trackers, which is why he decided to race him on that wet Saturday in February. Jungle Edge’s courageous performance and never-say-die personality won him a legion of fans when racing. He had his share of setbacks, but resilience was Edge’s middle name and his win came just at the right time for his supporters.
“I was ecstatic and, in my mind, it was his greatest win. I watched the race on the big screen and was very emotional,” said Dunkley.
“People like horses that lead and fight on. He puts a smile on many faces and this win came at a challenging time for a fair few people. The win also put a smile on the face of seasoned jockey and trainer Jade Darose. As Jungle Edge’s regular trackwork rider she had a close connection to the horse and decades of experience in the saddle. Jade began her jockey’s apprenticeship at 14 and became the first dual licence holder to win at Flemington when Parwan Prince took honours in July 2019.
After years of riding Jungle Edge in trackwork and trials, she was excited to get a chance to ride him in a race.
“It was a good race and the right conditions fell into place. He powered away from the crowd and suddenly I realised we might get this one. There were a lot of very happy and very emotional people cheering him on that day. It’s a race I’ll never forget.”
It seems that Jungle Edge will continue to provide happiness

post-racing, with his role at Equine Pathways Australia the perfect fit for the rising 11-year-old. Retiring sound after 89 races, of which he won 18, collecting more than $1.7 million in prizemoney, Bell is pleased to see his ‘best mate’ go to a good home. “The beauty of being a horse trainer is there is always next week, but I’m realistic that I’m most likely not going to get something as good as him again,” he said. Julia Battams of Equine Pathways could not be happier with her new recruit. “Edge arrived here in June and is transitioning to his new role really nicely,” she said. With plans for him to compete in the para-equestrian world, he is already showing signs that he will be a great addition. “He has a really good walk, and that is really important. He is just learning how to be mounted by the athlete from the hoist, as he is a bit unsure of that at the moment. It can be daunting for horses, as athletes swing up above them, so they have to learn to wait and be patient.” Jungle Edge’s temperament will serve him well in his new role. “It is important that horses are empathetic, but also sensible. Edge is the most sensible horse I have had. You never have to teach him anything twice and he takes everything in his stride,” said Battams. “I think it is because he is a bit older, so not much seems to bother him.” There may be exciting long-term goals for Jungle Edge, (“The 2024 Paralympics in Versailles wouldn’t be too bad!”), but until then he is happy in his new home, a paddock complete with a dam where he will no doubt indulge his love of swimming in the warmer months. He will also enjoy being back among his racing roots with a visit from the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour to Equine Pathways’ Open Day on Saturday 17 July.
“I’M REALISTIC THAT I’M MOST LIKELY NOT GOING TO GET SOMETHING AS GOOD AS HIM AGAIN.”
EQUINE WELFARE
A HELPING HAND BY MICHAEL LYNCH
Racing Victoria’s valuable acknowledged retrainers work tirelessly to transition retired racehorses into new careers. To enable an increase in the number of horses retrained each year, RV has recently introduced funding designed to ensure retrainers can continue to take on, care for and retrain the maximum number of off the track thoroughbreds. Racing Victoria (RV) has worked hard in recent years to boost its Off The Track Program (OTT) to ensure that the maximum number of former racehorses are retrained, rehomed and repurposed in the best possible environment as soon as their racing days are over. The sport’s social license depends on its integrity, and welfare is a key part of that integrity, as RV board member Kate Joel explains. She has had more than a half century of riding and caring for thoroughbreds and ex-racers, from her days as a youngster in Western Australia when she rode trackwork before going to school, to competitive times in the world of eventing and show jumping where she used retrained racehorses. Now, she is chair of RV’s Integrity Council and it is a job that is close to her heart. As such, she is closely involved in RV’s Retrainer Capacity Expansion Grant Program, a $200,000 funding package that allows RV Acknowledged Retrainers to apply for financial support to expand their premises, improve their facilities or to grow their team. The whole idea, as Kate and Emily Aitkenhead, RV’s Racehorse Transition Coordinator point out, is for the state’s retraining infrastructure to be improved so that more horses than ever can be professionally prepared for other roles in the equestrian world. “This program is about providing our acknowledged retrainers, those whom we have already approved, with support to give them the time they need to work with these horses to make them suitable for pony club or eventing or another discipline.
“There are strict controls around it to ensure there is integrity in the system and the horses’ needs will be met,” says Kate. Aitkenhead is responsible for running three of RV’s post-racing welfare initiatives – the RESET Program, Acknowledged Retrainer Program and the Retrainer Capacity Expansion Grant Program. “Most retrainers are reliant on the re-sale of the horses they train or a second job to sustain their business. Retraining horses is not a lucrative option but the retrainers are committed to providing positive post-racing outcomes for all our wonderful off the track thoroughbreds, all for the love of the horse,” she said.
EQUINE WELFARE
“Quite often, being able to grow their business by expanding their facilities is out of reach for them. The grant program has given them the opportunity to commence capital improvements for their properties, which will enable them to expand their capacity and enhance the quality of their retraining. “They were also able to apply for funding to take on a new staff member or purchase equipment to increase efficiency, which is a big help for them to take on more horses. “The maximum individual grants available from the $200,000 fund was $50,000. Applicants had to provide 20 per cent of the total project cost for capital improvements. “Some of the recipients are using the funding for fencing and to create new paddocks, which is a great way of being able to take on more horses. One of the successful applicants is building a whole new barn with six stables, walk-in/walk-out yards, tie-ups, wash bay, feed room, storage ... everything she needed but didn’t have” Emily said. One grateful recipient is retrainer Jade Willis, who bought her property in Barnawartha, near Wodonga, 18 months ago. “I have been trying to slowly develop things stage by stage. To get the grant now is amazing, I will be able to finish all the fencing and get the rest of the property in order. It will mean I am able to take in and retrain more horses.” “In the last calendar year I rehomed 96 horses, and when I have the new paddocks built, I’m hoping to rehome 150 to 160 horses each year,” said Jade.

A ll thoroughbred horses are descended from one of three foundation sires. The earliest of these, The Byerley Turk, is thought to be foaled between 1675 and 1680. The Byerley Turk was a fine charger, seized from the Turks by Captain Robert Byerley at the battle of Buda, in 1686 and brought back to England. The stallion from the east served as Captain Byerley’s war horse when he was later dispatched to Ireland during King William’s War. Described at the time as a horse of elegance, courage and speed, legend has it, that when attempting to survey an enemy position, Captain Byerley narrowly avoided capture but for the exceptional deftness of his mount. THE BYERLEY THIS RACE IS NAMED IN HONOUR OF THE BYERLEY TURK, THE FIRST OF THREE FOUNDATION SIRES OF THOROUGHBRED BLOODSTOCK.
The Byerley Turk, handcoloured etching after John Wootton. Source: VRC Collection
When Captain Byerley retired from the military the Turk was put to stud first at the family property at Middridge Grange in County Durham and later at the family seat at Goldsborough Hall in Yorkshire. The Byerley Turk’s most important offspring was Jigg the grand-sire of Herod, a stallion who is considered to be one of the foundation sires of the modern thoroughbred. Herod’s progeny are responsible for carrying The Byerley Turk line through into the twenty-first century.
