DAVID KEIR BUILDING, QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY BELFAST PROJECT PROFILE
Architectural services Samuel Stevenson & Sons provided architectural services for the internal refurbishment of academic offices and teaching spaces across three levels, with the project delivered in multiple phases to minimise disruption to ongoing university operations. Additional challenges included site-access constraints, support and integration of services equipment with the architectural design strategy, and the development of complex structural fire protection details. These challenges were resolved collaboratively between the client, design team, contractor and specialist suppliers. Olivia Laughlin, Architect, says, “The client challenged us to create a space that reflects the theme of ‘biophilia’, enhancing occupants’ connection with nature while supporting health, wellbeing and productivity. Drawing inspiration from the natural environment, we developed a calm yet vibrant interior palette incorporating soft greens, golden yellows and timber finishes. “The thoughtful use of colour blocking across floors and walls helps to define and zone larger spaces, creating clear visual identity and intuitive wayfinding. Bespoke, textured signage further enhances the user experience, providing a sensory and welcoming feature that complements the overall design concept.”
